\"Dangerous\"?

In the manual, under the description for the Gift of Kurgi artifact p281, does anyone know what the "Dangerous" attribute means?

Re: \"Dangerous\"?

The user will go insane, and randomly start not obeying your orders and doing something else instead, such as "search sites" "become prophet" or "ia ia Chtulhu Fhtagn". He'll also get severely horror-marked, and cursed as per the spell.

Re: \"Dangerous\"?

your cammonder gets insane and horror marked
both attributes increase over time, what results in loosing him to an (doom)horror sooner or later
and you slowly loose control over his actions due to the insanity

Sounds like great fun! Thanks for the replies.

As anyone come up with some good uses for the Gift of Kurgi given those harsh drawbacks or is the wielder ultimately doomed to die?

What does Gift of Kurgi do anyway? Are there any good things about it?

I'm too lazy to pickup my manual... It is there somewhere, maybe million other things stacked over it...

The biggest drawback is the auto-feebleminded and further hit to MR. On the positive side you get flying, ethereal, luck, and a lot of + defense. The best use I've heard of for it is on a heroic mr no-magic hero from ritual of rebirth.

Re: \"Dangerous\"?

It doesn't cause feeble-mindedness any more. That's been replaced by insanity.

As for what it does, Flying, Etherealness, Luck, +8 Defense and it can be used to cast Send Lesser Horror.

Re: \"Dangerous\"?

The manual says,"Extra attack, luck, ethrealness, fly, cursed, fear+25, spell:send lesser horror, dangerous, automatic call horror at start of battle, curses weilder, slight chance of horror mark"

A couple of points here, its got alot of powerful effects, so you could make a temporary powerful SC but it would be a good idea to pull the rest of the equipment off him at some point and just lose the gift?!?

If you gain horror marks, the automatic horror at battle start is going to attack the gifts weilder, so you need to be able to easily defeat horrors.

You could just equip a expendable character and just use the send horror spell each turn until horror attacked.

It costs 40 blood slaves, is it worth it?

Also why have so many of the unique artifacts got drawbacks?

Because I bought the rpg Powers and Perils sometimes in the 80's!

---

OK, that was not entirely fair!

Named Items (unique artifacts) in that game came with a drawback. It could be anything from not being usable unless under certain circumstances to lethal effects like cunsuming the bearers will or life force.

In literature the same phenomenon is also not unheard of. The One Ring and Stormbringer are clearly not beneficial to the bearer.

All in all I find it fitting and fun, and it makes it more difficult to make an uber SC or something similar. I actually dislike powerful items without drawbacks. Too easy to make winner strategies that way. Less fun thematically. Less fun incidents with insane commanders http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I'm glad many of the powerful items have interesting drawbacks.

No this is more than fair enough.

I bought book of traps 1,2 and 3. The next 2 entire groups of adventurers died in hideous fashion. I finally relised I was being too harsh, when in a constantly shifting maze, filled with trap, after trap the 3 remaining members of my adventuring party commited suicide rather than take another step.

I was then promptly sacked as gm for a year...and I only got the gig back after selling my books of traps at auction at a roleplaying convention... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Sounds like a fair sacking http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

But you should have kept the book (hidden).

Nah thats no fun, one of my favourite tricks was to descibe the setting then pick up a book of traps and 'accidently' let a bit show above the GM shield, no traps there of course. Another was put a perfectly mundane item in a treasure hoard and leaf through, encyclopedia magica, whenever they examined that item. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: \"Dangerous\"?

I find it well worth its weight in gold (slaves). I just throw it on a throwaway summoned unit, not even a high MR special. It makes a banelord pretty brutal in and of itself. I'd equip it with generic items, nothing I'd be too afraid to lose. If you lose it, shrug. Maybe one of the enemy mages is now horrormarked. Or even one of their brutal SCs that will even be more nasty... for a limited time.

If you're lucky it goes away and you can rinse, repeat.

Its a tad annoying when the unit's insane at a critical juncture, but usually survivable.

Its definitely a fun toy, just don't get too attached to either the item or the unit.

I'm a big fan of the old-school dnd methodology that KO is using, that great power comes at a price. As that flavor goes, most artifacts were designed to be used by a deity of one sort of another, and in anyone else's hands were too much for them.
Something to consider:
Perhaps in this vein pretenders or the demon lords may suffer less drawbacks from the artifact class items?

Re: \"Dangerous\"?

Hah, I see what you are trying to do! No way artifacts will have less drawbacks http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Especially not for the already great.

Re: \"Dangerous\"?

Drawbacks of the most powerful magic are one of my (many) favorite aspects of Dominions.

Gift of Kurgi I tend to use to launch horrors at enemies. I give it to someone disposable, and just try to get my blood's worth in horrors, which usually works out (i.e. torments my foes) nicely and economically.

I bought an evil traps book as a GM and would let my players know it, but I don't remember actually using anything from it, especially not the super-evil stuff. Not that I didn't have plenty of my own evil stuff - just in my own style. But reading the savage ideas I did find interesting and got me thinking of different kinds of possibilities.

When I GM'd I kept a box of index cards. It was full of all sorts of random events for city streets, dungeon halls, woodland, etc. And when players did something interesting I would make a card out of it which was fun also.

But one thing that used to really piss off the players were some cards that said something like "giggle and put down the card" or "roll a 6 sided diced and then humm".

Our DM was infamous for rolling like a crit machine whenever he was DMing. You'd always looks over, see him roll like 3 20's, and then "the question" would come up.

"So uh, how much life you got left?"

He didn't like killing us much.

I haven't used Kurgi yet in Dom3, though I did occasionally in Dom2. I'm sad to hear Feeblemind is gone, actually; I loved putting it on a golem, since it also ended up protecting him from Magic Duels while providing the most important astral buffs (luck, ethereal) anyways, not to mention the golem-crucial additions of flight and +defense.
