New Map: Yggdrasil

1 Attachment(s)
In a very liberal interpretation I present you the world-tree.

It has 99 Provinces, 1 of them filled with water.
http://freenet-homepage.de/maraxus/ygg.jpg

It currently is an (unbalanced) scenario for 11 Early-Aera nations with pre-set starting positions.

It does not reach "Dawn of dominions", but I like it nevertheless. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: New Map: Yggdrasil

Interesting...
Reminds me of Master of Magic... and gives me some interesting ideas. I hadn't thought this kind of map possible.

Any dragons gnawing at the roots of the tree? If I had artistic talent... but I don't. I'd love to fill in all sorts of Norse mythological tidbits. If it's possible to assign a monster to a specific province... it might be interesting to chain up a Fenrir-style pretender to one of the provinces. I forget what that chassis is called, but...

Perhaps a beast guarding the entrance to each tier?

Great map. I love the Tree of Life idea. Thanks.

There have been others in this style. It reminds me of the maps done by Andrew J. Osborn. Check them out about halfway down on this page.

Re: New Map: Yggdrasil

Agatha is guarding the Sublevel, Ulm the Midlevel and Tir Na'og the upper realm... at least untill they attack each other. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hm, setting monsters there sounds interesting.
Nidhggr guarding between the lower level and mid level and Mimir, a Giant with massive Astral power between mid and top.

And one idea, I really allready thought before: The middle layer (Uthgard) is surrounded by water - but this is no province. One could make it a province and place Jrmungand into it

Gandalf: Yes, the Land of Milk and Iron - Underworld - Stygian Abyss.
THe big diffrence is, that that map Has every province connecting up/down, while in the tree, you need to go through the bottleneck to chance the layer. This and the fact, that I used Mountains/rivers/a fisure to block pathes makes my map a lot more fractal. In other words: It's just a similar design. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

No its definetly a new map. Its great.
I was just replying to Lazy_Perfectionist comment that he didnt think a map like this was possible. I didnt mean to imply that you had redone one of his maps.

Re: New Map: Yggdrasil

Thanks for pointing that out, both of you.

So... would it be possible for me to convert those maps from dom2 to dom3 WITHOUT owning Dom2? I wouldn't be able to load them up to see what they were originally like. Or would I be possibly missing something important about them without ever playing them in their original medium?

If yes, I might devote some time to studying up on conversion, and doing so. If no, I'll probably pass on that.

Anyways, Maraxus, for creating this map, you've earned a 'Norse point'(tm). Redeemable with your local 'Norse fan'(tm), Lazy Perfectionist(copyright 1984). Offer not valid in Florida, Massachussets, or where expressly prohibitted by law. Norse points may be redeemed for ????

So, I like seeing this map. Thanks.

Yes, Dom2 Maps still work for Dominions 3. iirc, the description went somewhat wrong their and they don't use all features (border mountains for example) but the important parts are still good.

Very nice map. I'll have to have a go on this some time.

There are some threads someplace around here that talks about converting Dom2 to Dom3. Often you can just download and try them but sometimes it needs to have a small change in the .map text file that comes with it.

Beautiful map, but you left out atleast 6 worlds http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

This map looks pretty great. I'm going to try it out. One tiny point. Your flavor text: "uppest" should be "highest" unless you're going for an (actually kinda cool) neologism.

Re: New Map: Yggdrasil

Very nice - question: who are you using for Muspelheim?

Maraxus August 23rd, 2007 01:11 AM

Re: New Map: Yggdrasil

Abysia, obviously. Yes, they are the really shortest Fire-Giants so far, but they fit into the lowest level.

Niefelheim, Helheim, Abysia (Hey, this comes from Abyss, doesn't it?) and Agatha - I think the flair is really E-vil down there. Within this the contrast between Abysian "too hot" and Nieflheim's "too cold" - the lowest level is no place you will want to stay.

Ulm, Marveni, Ermor - the mid level belongs to the human, I thought Ulm to be a quite good central nation here, because - the Germanic and the Norse mythology are quite connected. - With all those forest survivalas, they make good guardians of the tree. The Other 2 were quite randomly choosen.

Vanheim, Caelum, Ctis, Tir Na n'Og - the high level should be something "above" metaphysically. Vanheim is easy. This map is about Heaven (Asgard = Vanheim) vs Hel(l). Tir took the nordic place of the Lightelves, I know they like that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif The other two ... I've choosen Ctis, because Pharaoes were supposed to be living Gods, and the Lizard Kings fit this role good. The Eagle Kings feel quite similar in this respect.

Re: New Map: Yggdrasil

Something odd is going on with the map for me. I started a few games with Ermor and the start point is bouncing around. It seems like a bug because one time I was placed directly next to Van's starting point, and another time on the lower level. (Ermor's supposed to be in the lush middly greenery, yes?)

Re: New Map: Yggdrasil

Now, this I call a field test. yes, Ermor was the only nation where I had a little typo in "#specstart"

I had hoped that you had created a mod that creates Muspelheim as a nation with Muspel giants. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Cool!

I would like to ask your permission to take and modify this map. I would like to:

-Add Yomi to the lower level, possibly on a connection point with the mid level (demons, spirits of Hel)
-Add another human nation to the middle level (possibly Arcocephale)
-Add Sauromatia to the upper level (Helheim has the Valkyries - and the Amazons of Greek myth and Valkyries of Norse myth have similar inspiration, even though they play very different roles in the actual mythology, so these represent the Valkyries)
-Expand the sea in Midgard and include Jormongand, who himself would include several provinces. There might be additional contacts between the levels here aslo: Atlantis in the deep abyss connected with the lower level; Oceana, representing Aegir's hall and His relatives and followers connecting the upper level; R'lyeh, the hostile alien evil stirring in the venom of Jormongand's bile. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
