Deathstalkers PBW game

I have created a PBW game and I am looking for a few (read:7) players to join in a 8 player game. 5000 point empires, max starting bonus, 3 planets in a med spiral map. Yes there are computer empires (medium #, high diff, med ai bonus), looking to do at least 1 turn a day (hopefully more, plays not forced on weekends, xcept weekend of 13-16th july which I will be camping http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif).

Special Shipsets are more than welcome, (hell, I'm playing Vader!)

Starting time to be announced (see how many players we get).

Will be checking the PBW once/twice a day to approve joins.

No real experience needed (don't be afraid, we'll be gentle http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif).

I just applied to join. I'm a little hesitant to get into a second PBW game, but it looks like Askan is going to eliminate me from Geo's Tourney within a couple weeks anyway, and your game is the first I've noticed that's starting with low tech.

I would like to give it a try. This would be my first try, so I may need a little intel on how to play PBW. I am available for one or more turns a day.

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

Sure no problem, newbies are great, they oft time come up with strategies or a way of looking at things that those who play the game alot don't.

First things, go to the PBW site and find 'Deathstalkers Game', then sign up with an empire name. Then I can 'approve'/accept you to join, then create a 5000point empire (just start a game of se4, create an empire with 5000 racial points <any shipset> and save that empire file). Then after approved send in the empire file at the PBW site. If you are using a special shipset (borg etc) be sure to load it from the shipset directory or upload it to the PBW server.

Any other questions, just ask http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

I found the PBW site http://seiv.pbw.cc/ but I don't see any games listed. Am I at the right site?

Yep, right site. I guess you first have to register with a name and a password (just like for Posts at the shrapnel site) and then click games on the top navbar, go to 'open games' on the left navbar and my game is down the list of open games.

Hi
Got a few questions to ask, I want to make sure I understand the rules so I don't messed up the game.

I have downloaded your empire and just wanted to know what folder I unstall it to? Once the game starts does downloading the file also setup the galaxy and related files? When I look at the siev.pbw site under your game and under the commands column I have 'Withdraw' listed, can you tell me what this means? Once I completed a turn, I generate a turn and than save it and sent the turn, is this correct? Looking forward to playing the game.

Many thanks

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

Questions are good!

The shipset I am using is the Star Wars Empire 1 shipset. All you need to do is unzip it. Then move the unzip folder (called sw-emp1 probally) into the 'races' folder in se4 (in the 'pictures' folder). Everyone must do this for special shipsets that don't come with the base se4 game. This is so that everyone will see the correct empire pictures etc. Just like installing a TDM-modpack.

When the game starts everyone will be getting a turn file every time a turn is generated. It is a zip file, you unzip it into your Se4 folder 'Savegame', then go into the game, load the appropriate save game (deathstalker......) and click onto your empire, enter the password you have selected and then hit 'login'.

Take your turn, then the file will be saved under a file like 'deathstalker3.plr', with the number being the # your empire/player is. Go to the pbw site, enter the game selection for the game (deathstalkers game) and hit 'send turn', it will as you to find the previously mentioned file, (browse), send it. Send the plr file, not the gam file.

Thats about it http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

'Withdraw' basicly means you quit the game, your empire is removed. Not having used it myself I don't know if the empire is still there and you are absent (leaving it open for another player to fill) or completely gone from the game.

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

Whoops, forgot to mention (assumed but did not specify exactly), the turns will appear by email automatically, same with reminders if you have not taken your turn yet and everyone else has.

On another note, who else has special shipsets?? anyone??

If your are curious (or just lazy like me, forgot to download a shipset once), if you don't have the correct shipset for an empire then the game will randomly select one for the pictures each time you play, so you could see your opponents as one shipset and then another next turn and not realize it.

My first piece of advice for newbies is: if you haven't played much using Strategic Combat, set up a solo game with Tactical Combat turned off to practice on.

First turn has been generated and should be recieved quickly. If my corner of the galaxy is any indication then planet mix is fairly good.

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

We would appear to have a little problem.

After downloading the file, I clicked logon and realized that I had open the first empire. The Imperial Emire. I checked the other empires and found I can also open the Tredazi Collective as well as my own the Waldo Clan. I can also open the four computer empires.

My guess had been I would be using the password from the PBW site, so I didn't setup a password with my empire in the game. I am betting my guess was wrong. It's clear to me now that I have have to stop hitting my head with a 2x4.

I believe we are going to need a restart. At the begining of the game I don't want to know about the other players. I can avoid the computers players but could end up forgetting to click my player position before logging in. Plus the fact I have an idea where the other players are doesn't help.

So Deathstalker can you setup a new game? This time I will setup my password with my empire. Anything else you can think of to help avoid beginer mistakes would be great. 2x4's leave a lot of swelling on the brain.

Thanks

Rubinski

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

I don't mind a restart but would point out that you can change your password without one. Just use the empire option. In a game I hosted we had 3 players who forgot passwords and they simply changed their empires to use the password they gave PBW.

Don't know what to do about the AI though.

Thanks LeTharg.

I change my password. I don't mind playing the game as is if that what the other players want.

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

Hmmmm...Will see if I can change the AI passwords. As to a restart, only if everyone agrees. Personally I think we can continue from here. It's easy, just don't look. Most games run on an honor system, 'cheating' in this game is fairly easy, and sometimes hard to catch. (also 'cheating' is hard to define, ie. are emails between players cheating?, to some yes, it gets around that 2 turn delay for Messages ingame.) I have even heard of some people changing their components.txt, buildin a ship type and then changing it back hoping no-one will notice the changes for supply use or weapon tonnage used.

I am playing a game with 'Puke' right now, I have changed empires and it would be fairly easy to look into my old empire, but I don't, just spoils the fun for me/everyone else.

Besides, knowing something (starting position, ships position, etc) is one thing, but doing something about it is another thing entirely http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif

Well, anyone for a re-start??

If not, happy conquering!

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

I really don't think it's a big enough problem to warrant a restart. Once all the human players set passwords, you'll only be able to get at your own info plus the AIs, and since they're listed Last, you'll see your own empire first, so accidentally clicking the wrong empire shouldn't be a problem.

I think Deathstalker can set passwords for the AIs, as well, but I'm not sure of that.

You can pretend your knowledge of where the empires you could see are on the map are legends of "ancient asronauts". http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif

I agree we can continue. I will set my password at the next opportunity. I made the same assumptions reguarding the password being the same as the site one, oops. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif This being my first pbw game also.

Oops, made a boo boo myself. Didn't set the game password correctly, getting 'master password incorrect' turn execution errors, looking into it.

I have manually processed the turn, your files should be waiting in your email for turn 2.

Sorry about the inconvienience.

Deathstalker,

You will not be the first game host to do that nor probably the Last. I speak from experience. The admin folks at PBW are very nice about getting things going--when I did the same thing, they had it fixed within seconds of my posting on the Boards.

PBW is marvelous.

Well, we seem to have had our first turn processed without a player recently, thought I'd bring up the 24hr time period. Does everyone think this is a good period to wait for turns to get in? Or should it be lengthened? I am pretty reasonable, and I know how the AI can screw up an empire good in a few turns. Response is appreciated, but if no real objections are brought up (or no one responds) the 24 hrs wait will remain. Other than that I hope everyone is having fun, personally I havn't met any human players yet, but the AI's I have met are pretty tough! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

It would be nice to get a few turns in day, but understand that someone can have something come up and miss a turn.

I would like to stay with the 24 hour turns.

Re: Deathstalkers PBW game

I also would like to stay with 24 hour. In another game we went to longer periods and I found it hard to stay interested (and remember what was going on). Short attention span I guess.

Exceptions can be made for anticipated problems. In addition to waiting as we did Last week-end, players can get someone else to play their turn. Or if you choose the 'AI do nothing' setting and fill your queues, you can let the AI play one turn without too many dire consequences.

I have used the "AI doesn't make changes in simultaneous games" option in some games and it works very well. If you use it AI doesn't break your treaties or something else stupid. It just gives orders to ships that don't have them and fills empty queues.
