Dominions : The Movie
As I was playing the Dawn Map I wondered how a Dominions movie would be. It could easily be something as immense as Lord of The Rings but even better because there are more razes and nations with their own histories religions, gods, and so on.

I think something was discussed back in Dom2 about it. The conversation went something along the line of....
1) how can I record a combat? 2) fraps 3) upload to youtube 4) edit it to add funny comments or add dance music? 5) Mac(imovie) Windows(windows movie maker) 6) real movie, me and my buddies, I want to play Lord of the Wild who draws droves of wild party girls out of the woods. Well from there it went off track http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif But it does sound like it could at least be your 15 minutes of fame on YouTube (plus abit of advertising for Dominions) if someone wanted to do it. Better than the backyard wrestling or just-another-starwars that I keep seeing there. |

Kristoffer is a prolific writer. I get the impression that we would get a lot more storyline if he didnt feel try to avoid flooding us. Maybe he could write up a script.

I've thought about doing Dominions-themed practice projects once I can really start doing 3d stuff. I've managed to get my foot in (I'm going to study "game modeling", or 3d for games - I'm not interested in that, but didn't get to the schools I really wanted), but I'm still trying to learn to draw and quite far from actually doing anything. Still, in ten years or so, I'd like to have some cool stuff done. Perhaps not quite LotR stuff, but very good looking nonetheless. There are many, many ideas, but I don't have the skills to do them properly yet.
Example: abysian kills a satyr hoplite, zoom out and show abysians fighting satyrs/maenads and storm of vine arrows killing several abysians, a demonbred dives out of the clouds and answers with flame eruption, entanglement and dangerous melee, horde of spine devils advancing from far away BAM - music stops, black screen, and text/voice: "The flames are burning" flash of battle "The forest is in danger" flash of hoof striking ground "Your time has come" black screen, voice booms "I AM BELLEPHORON" Great White Bull smashing the abysians under his hoofs "FIRST BORN OF GAIA" various magical effects going off around him, falling fires failing to hurt him "I AM LORD OF THIS FOREST" *bang* black screen, fades to the hand grasping map image, the title appears. "Make thy kingdom come. Dominions 3 - the Awakening." |

We need to base it around a nation and it's national heros, the big bad enemy would likely be Ermor (we'd probably be talking MA or LA)
I'm glad someone brought this up, I had this idea a while back but never said anything about it. Oh, but the start has to be a sorta bird view, flying over the separate nations and showing their massive armies, haha, that'd be so cool. |

lol a comic would be nice but since it's not about individuals but about armies and you can't connect the different ages and how they get that way in one comic I think it would be hard to make it interesting and still feel like dominions...

I'd like to add why not Dominionclix? You know, those collectible miniature games? I mean c'mon, if HALO with about four different units in the video game rates their own clix game, how about Dominion's 1500+ units?

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/ Basically it's a miniatures game where instead of having a book with all the army stats/abilities in it, you have a dial on the base of each unit that you click one way or the other to represent damage. Personally I think it's a little silly. I don't know if you've ever tried to play a minature game where you're suppose to be constantly picking up almost every fig on the map and then replacing them into exactly the same spot, but it's quite difficult to prevent disputes when the units go back down. Aha! Then I've seen them. I got some kind of tiny heroine when I was at Origins.
I suppose it is easier than stacks of paper bits with units, numbers, conditions etc, though. I never played much ASL, but I have witnessed my friend's irritation over large stacks separated in mid by foxholes or building levels, adjacent to other stacks of similar configuration. But there is perhaps not as much disputes going on at least. |

clix would work well with a pretender + lieutenants (heroes, unique summons, and thugs possibly (jarls)). Get a big ol hex map (possibly sectional) and only have 3 or 4 units per side on the board at once. Figure out a point system, turn it into currency and then you can "buy" new units/items/spells. While thinking of it, anyone ever play the old LOTR card game? Leaders (pretenders) had a certain amount of..er, leadership (X)(dominion?) and could control that many (X) of units. For instance, lady of rivers (leadership 9) could be used to lead Lanka and can control 1 Mandaha (4 pts needed), 1 Queen of air (4), and 1 (whatever that assassin hero is) (1). Or it could be broken down further, pretenders have high leadership (8-10) and heroes have lower (2-4), then uniques, troops. You could also add items/spells but it could get complicated quick. Similar deal - clix (which seems to simplify stats) + WoW boardgame. Simplify the stats, add a leadership function and make it a conquest/war game. Actually, a shogun type (samurai swords) might be easier to implement. Shogun already has: Daimyo's - leaders/pretenders Troops - heroes/uniques castles economy - provinces = money, use money to activate certain items or purchase troops. mercenaries experience system and a ninja - work out a similar spell system (need to spend money to cast a spell(gems)) Have like 15 iconic spells, 10 iconic items First round would be pretender creation using a fixed # of creation points (say 25) Choose pretender (varies between 3-8) Choose dominion (leadership) (say 1-10) Pick a max of 3 spells (say 1-3 each) Pick items (say 1-3 each) Second round - purchase army(s)/place army(s) We've got like 3 copies of shogun in our friends group, so I'd probably buy it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif /ramble off |

Haaaa... I know what the next step should be. A dominions webcomic, with lots of black humor.. like Order of the Stick kind of humor, following different armies for certain amount of time and then going to next armys situation

Seraph Inn is good, and the artist actually had planned an end for it AND ended it as planned - almost a unique achievement as far as webcomics go. Goblins (life through their eyes) started awesome, grew, and became too slow and obese and gluttered. It can still deliver the awesome, though. Pawn is hilarious, but only updates once a year. I suggest instead checking out Fredrik Andersson's art on Elfwood, and Naorhy. Awesome Swedish artist, and one of the reasons I want to study visual arts. He tells such stories in single picture... Also, his works are refreshingly NSFW, so keep out if you're afraid of boobies. Also Gunnerkrigg Court, it's a bit like playing Kailasa and realizing the castes are based on real castes, and that the island of Lanka is Sri Lanka, and then finding out that the Gurus reincarnate... You can't believe anyone would go that deep to just create some entertainment for people who don't really understand the depth. Alternatively, it's a bit like being quite drunk, and things that shouldn't work seeming oh-so-sensible. |
