Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i

Slow Boat to T'ien Ch'i is a game for new players (3 mp games or less under their belts) who can't necessarily guarantee the spare time to guarantee a 24-48 hour turn schedule.

The game is set in EA. Other settings are vanilla.

IMPORTANT: Due to unreliable amounts of free time in Real Life (TM) for the host and others, the game will be set to a 168 hour (1 week) quickhost on Llamaserver ( www.llamaserver.net). This is intended as an upper limit on turn time rather than an expected turnaround time, and it is hoped that most turns will be cycled through within 48 hours (and preferably 24 hours in the first 10-20 turns).

3 slots in the game have been taken so far, and the races Lanka and T'ien Ch'i have been reserved.

[Edit]
Races taken are:
1: Lanka (Demon Monkeys) - Gregstrom
2: T'ien Ch'i (Seasonal cavalry) - Greenaris
3: Agartha (pallid, live in basements - no, I don't mean the players...) - agema
4: Sauromatia (Death Lizards) - Shogi
5: Tir na N'og (Celts sans kilts) - Vacant
6: Niefelheim (the Big Chill) - llamabeast
7: Ermor (wot no undead?) - DryaUnda
8: Arcoscephale (The Hannibal All-stars) - Aethyr
9: Abysia (Hot stuff, and I'm really not kidding here) - llamaserver AI
10: Helheim (Making death a valid career move for demigods everywhere) - Shamash

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I would like to join and reserve Sauromatia if I could.

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I've finished two games, but am in two others. Would I be able to join?

I think that I would like yomi or tir na og, if possible.

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I would like a spot, if one is still open. I will probably decide on a nation soon.

I would like a spot. Niefelhiem (giants)please.

I'd like to join as Ermor.

I'd like to join; I'm currently in 3 games. Arco please.

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

As we have 8 players and no water players, it looks like Parganos won't be entirely suitable. I'm thinking of generating a random map instead - unless anyone has suggestions...

[edit] As we're not in Parganos, more players are still welcome.

I would like Abysia please.

Hello

If it is possible for me to join, I would like to play as Helheim.

I think that I shall settle on Tir.

Gregstrom October 5th, 2007 05:29 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

As noted up top, I've declared the game full.

Urraparrand looks a reasonable map, I think. Does anyone know better?

Dedas October 6th, 2007 02:58 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

It is a good map.

Shamash October 6th, 2007 05:23 AM

I agree.

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Works for me. Do we have an estimated day/time to send in pretenders and a projected start date?

llamabeast October 6th, 2007 10:04 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Okay, I've created the game, you can start uploading pretenders whenever. Here's how:

- Make sure you have the same mods enabled as the game you're playing in (Preferences->Mod Preferences) although only mods affecting pretender design, such as Conceptual Balance, actually matter
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have 'SlowBoat' in the subject line of your e-mail

You can see who's joined so far at www.llamaserver.net.

Dedas October 6th, 2007 10:56 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Thank you lama. Although I do believe we aren't using mods in this game.

Gregstrom October 6th, 2007 05:35 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Yup, no mods at this point. Maybe next game :-)

Can we try to have Pretenders in by, say, 5 pm on Friday (GMT)?

Not having done this before, I don't know what the timings normally are.

Shamash October 6th, 2007 06:01 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I assume we will be working with the latest version, right? I am patched up to 3.08.

Gregstrom October 7th, 2007 10:48 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

3.08, yup.

Gregstrom October 8th, 2007 06:24 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Looks like my last post didn't make it to the forum.

Can we have Pretenders in by Friday, please. Start will be Friday too, I should think.

Dedas October 8th, 2007 11:27 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Maybe you should change the topic to "upload pretenders" for everyone to get the picture. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

T'ien Ch'i reporting in, many thanks to Gregstrom and llamabeast for setting up the game. Will try to upload my pretender tonight. So many choices! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hi, I'm the booked in undecided, I'll be Agartha, will upload pretender tonight.

Ta for the suggestion Dedas - the change has been made.

Are we going to use the new 3.10 patch?

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I didn't realise there was a 3.10 patch. I'll check wth llamabeast, but I also favour using it.

Aethyr October 9th, 2007 06:09 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I am operating under the assumption that Llama's server, as indicated in the other games I'm currently playing, will be converting over. So, I am assuming that this will be the case for this game as well. Please advise if this is not the case. Thanks

Shamash October 9th, 2007 07:04 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I am also in favour of updating. I have downloaded the patch but it is not yet installed. For now, I shall wait until instructed to go ahead with installing (should we reach that decision).

Dedas October 10th, 2007 02:50 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Of course we should update before starting, else it will only get troublesome later.

Gregstrom October 10th, 2007 04:23 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I'm waiting on a positive confirmation from Llamabeast before saying 'do it'.

PS: We have 4 pretenders uploaded currently - 6 to go.

llamabeast October 10th, 2007 05:29 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Yep, we'll definitely be using 3.10. I'm just about to install it now...

What are the settings of the game, please?

Specifically, random events and magic sites, please.

Gregstrom October 11th, 2007 04:49 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

As per the OP. vanilla settings as given by the game.

Gregstrom October 13th, 2007 01:25 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Nor for me. Llamabeast said he'd kick it off on Friday - I'll ask if there's a problem with the server.

Edit: As yet, no reply.

Shamash October 15th, 2007 07:49 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

For some reason, www.llamaserver.net shows that the max number of players for our game is 22 when it should be 10. Could that be a reason?

llamabeast October 15th, 2007 07:56 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Sorry guys, I'm doing a poor job of coping with all the llamaserver stuff at the moment - I have a big deadline coming up at work, no internet access at home, and 3 games to get sorted/started - eeek!

I will endeavour to get it started later today, but it may end up being tomorrow. Really sorry about the delayed start. No internet access at home (and hence basically none at all at weekends) is really proving infuriating! Thankfully the cursed staff of British Telecom are meant to get us sorted by the end of this week. So, only 41 days instead of the stated 72 hours...

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I've had my problems with BT as well. Service being cut off for no reason, then reattached to the wrong phone number...

Funny thing is, I went with them because they had a good reputation for quality of service. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image.../firedevil.gif

GreenAris October 15th, 2007 10:12 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

No problem I am just grateful that you are willing to host our game, many thanks once again.

BT are hopeless!

Shamash October 15th, 2007 10:22 AM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

I don't know about BT (cos I'm not British) but if I ever migrate to the UK, now I know I won't be using them!

And thanks for hosting our game llamabeast!

llamabeast October 15th, 2007 12:43 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

BT really are spectacularly bad. Unfortunately they still have a monopoly on connecting phone lines, although you can choose someone else to operate the line once it's connected. Actually we did consider cable - but the relevant company (NTL) are notorious for bad customer service so we decided against them! Aaargh!

Anyway - can I just confirm you want to play on Urraparrand for when I get to start it?

Gregstrom October 15th, 2007 01:26 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

Yup - Urraparand's the one.

Dedas October 15th, 2007 01:41 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

BT is just like Swedens Telia; they own all the lines but "lease" them to other companies. It's a pain in the *** for the consumer it is. It has gotten better in recent years though.

Gregstrom October 15th, 2007 01:49 PM

Re: Slow Boat to T\'ien Ch\'i - Recruiting

NZ are probably worse off though - there is (AFAIK) only one ground telecomms company there. Telecom are also one of the two mobile operators.

Prices aren't exactly great. When I was there in the spring, data transfer was NZ$10 per megabyte.
