Wrath of God & Purgatory

How exactly is the damage for these spells calculated? I tried searching even in the Dom2 forum, but only found Warth of God targetting question . I've read WoG & Purgatory are "stronger and more likely in friendly dominion", but that's vague. WoG is AN and can kill a 15life unit in it's own dominion(10) so I'm curious about the formula. Does a higher level caster increase the damage potential too?

Same goes for purgatory's damage if anyone knows. An old Dom2 post said Purgatory harms your own undead too, but given the Dom3 description I'm guessing that's been changed.

I don't believe anyone knows the technical calculations for how these spells distribute damage. There's a rare chance Gandalf has done some testing in this arena.

Re: Wrath of God & Purgatory

I have used Purgatory in my recent MP game. Meglobob invaded my northern lands with corpse constructs and soulless. It seemed to work pretty nice. His armies were not very large (a couple of hundred in total IIRC) and 90, 60, 40 units were targeted the first 3 turns. I killed some of manually as well, so I'm not sure how he experienced the spell. His banelords seems to have survived the onslaugth without problems. Not sure about his unfrozen, there is still a handful or three around.

It doesn't target your own units.

It does effect even banelords, it gives them afflictions. Also it seems to take out the odd unfrozen, every now and again.

Against, LA Ermor or anyone else with huge amounts of undead Purgatory would be absolutely devestating. I don't see how LA Ermor could ever succeed in conquering a nation with Purgatory up.

I have found Purgatory annoying. But then Kristoffer has a very, very annoying playing style. Half a dozen locust swarms/blights/raging hearts/baleful star in the opening months of the war. Then leprosy on any big armies you have wondering around. The use of slaves to garrison castles, so they are incredibly difficult to siege and of course the large armies you use get leprosy.

Still, has I have used all those tactics myself I can't complain... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

The one tactic I have never used is slaves to garrison castles, I assume slaves have no upkeep? Not being able to take enemy castles is really annoying, it stops you applying the finishing blow.

I have been experimenting with the, 'ultimate' castle defense force in SP. It is 1 army that can gateway to any castle you own and is capable of taking out any attacking army. It will probably be banned as another exploit if its use ever becomes widespread... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: Wrath of God & Purgatory

Checked a bit in the code.

Chance of targeting a unit: 10*dom %
Dmg: 6 ap fire damage (x3 vs undead/demons - which might seem redundant since these are the only ones targeted)

The spell seem quite devastating.

Indeed! 10 dominion means all units will be hit. Say goodbye to your undead army of skeletons, zombies and ghouls!

Cool spell.

Oh, and I always garrison my castles with the cheapest and strongest unit available when I'm at war. I find it to be plain militia in most cases.

You mean that there is anyone who survives to late game and does NOT do this? :-)

Thanks http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I try my best.

Unfortunately I missed the last hosting du to confusion.

There is already a solution to this, Crumble. I love that spell.

As for the unbeatable army, i have my doubts. Many times I have thought that I had assembled such and army only to have it destroyed. Such is the way of Dominions 3 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Fire damage, eh? A banelord with a fire ring might be able to laugh at it, even if he might find himself all alone when all his longdead buddies burned to a crisp... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Kristoffer O October 7th, 2007 02:51 AM

Re: Wrath of God & Purgatory

Yep, but it will force the wearer to dedicate one slot for it.

Edit: So now Meglobob will equip his tartarians with fire rings http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Edit2: His tartarians doesn't need them to surviuve though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Scouts armed with gate cleavers are good for knocking down castle gates. Keep them stealthed with an army until you come to a fort.

Re: Wrath of God & Purgatory

Does Purgatory only affect enemy nations or does it affect ALL undead (including those belonging to the caster)?

NTJedi October 11th, 2007 01:54 PM

Re: Wrath of God & Purgatory

only enemy nations where your dominion exists.

So, what are the odds for getting somebody with Wrath of God?

Velusion-
I believe NTjedi is incorrect, Purgatory will hit your own undead units.

That was definitely the case in Dom2, though I haven't tested it in Dom3.

(Edit: as PyroStock points out, KO says otherwise. I don't have the patience to either dig through code or test a game that far just to verify, so go with what he says.)

Play the game more before telling veterans on the forum they are incorrect. Purgatory does not strike your own units.

Re: Wrath of God & Purgatory

That's a bit rude. Everyone, even veteran players, make mistakes. If someone thinks I'm wrong, I'd rather that they post their doubts. If they are wrong, they'll get the detailed answer, and if they're right my mistake is corrected. Win/Win either way.

Thanks for taking the time to make a personal attack after I'd already edited my post to admit my mistake.

I had a striking memory of surprise getting my own units Purgatoried in Dom2, and that's the information on which I posted.

It might not have been intended as an attack, but it sounded a bit attackish, I'd say. Use a smilie http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Always works http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Will do, earlier today I used many emoticons / graemlins within a post. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
