llamaserver email madness

Make it stop! It's sending me an email every 5 minutes to tell me about the patch.

It's still bombarding me, so I sets up a filter. Voila. All messages with 'New dominions version available!' go straight to trash.

It is a magical well of repetition. Gather 'round and be astonished.

I think I should sign llamabeast up for one porn site, magazine subscription, and/or e-mail based news service for every extraneous e-mail I've gotten.

Jazzepi - I had a friend who did that to his boss every time he got really annoyed at him. The boss changed his email address about every year and a half.

Easy solution.

Hi guys,

Really really sorry about this - a significant cock-up on my part. Hope you've all managed to clean out the spam without accruing too much fury.

I think we are all taking it in pretty good spirits. no harm done.

Re: llamaserver email madness

Basically the scheme was like this:

if (llamaServer receives a 2h file from a newer version) then
- Send out an e-mail to everyone
- Postpone all hostings by 24 hours
- Shut self down

Unfortunately the last step there was malfunctioning, due to a missing and crucial '>'. So it did the same thing every five minutes over the whole night. Also it postponed all hostings till February! But I've fixed that now.

The difficulty really was that I had no way to test it when I wrote it. Normally I test things quite a lot to be sure they work (I seem to suffer from rampant typos). So I was worried it might not work, but it never occurred to me that it would go crazy.

That was a sign: you should embark on a career in unsolicited bulk messaging instead of messing with these strange PBEMs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: llamaserver email madness

Well I was thinking, if I'd only signed a deal to include a viagra advert in all those e-mails I could be loaded now!

(not really of course, it only sent O(20000) e-mails(!), which is nothing compared to a genuine spamming campaign, and of course repeating the recipients makes it much less effective!)

Does anyone want any viagra, by the way?

Re: llamaserver email madness

Once I manage to regain the magical lands where sex is a reallity instead of a myth I'll remember your offer. For now I'm not in any urgent need of Viagra though, thanks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Edit: Obviously this is just a joke and any possible similarity to any real life person, activity, or lack thereoff is purely coïncidential.
