I was looking at ICEchat as an IRC client instead of trillian, too. Anyone heard of it?

I use both ie and firefox for websites developpement, but I have a bit preference for IE for common internet usage, because it launches faster.

Email: outlook (std) because I alwais used it.

Chat msn is suffisant for my sparse usage: about 3 time per year

Firefox, Thunderbird at home, because they're good at what they do, and I used to use them on Windows and were available when I migrated to Linux. I'm tempted to try Opera again though (last used it at version 5, but dropped it when v6 was full of bloat). It had better have something as good as adblock on firefox though.

I use Lotus Notes at work. It is without doubt one of the worst computer programs I have ever used. It's hideous. I can't believe they charge real money for this crap. The only thing harder to believe is that my company paid for it, and expects me to use it.

I generally use IE for browsing at work, because that's what most of our customers use so I feel I ought to be familiar with it. Also, it makes me grateful to get home to firefox. Besides, it's not my machine, not my problem if it gets pwned=-) I do have a few other browsers installed though, for testing web pages and that.

Chat: Don't use it that often. Xubuntu came with a multi-network chat client that I have used a few times to connect to #ubuntu for technical advice, but I'm so disinterested I can't even remember what it's called. For a while on Windows I was using chatzilla, an IRC-plugin for firefox (yeah I know, how pointless is that?) which was OK.

The only chat network I will bother with is IRC, can't be doing with MSN, AIM and the rest.

Firfox

Google mail online interface is good enough for all my email needs. I've got several accounts setup, all forwarding to one I check, and can send emails from any account by logging into the main one. There are also some rules for email lists which are automatically grouped under a label separate from the inbox. And you can use Google search to find old mail which works well. 10 min to setup for first time, very easy, clean and simple and of course can be used from anywhere.

Skype for chat, but not much

I use Opera for routine Web surfing, because I'm still on dialup and it's noticeably faster than IE or Firefox. I use IE for the occasional site that's Opera chokes on, and Firefox for a single site that neither Opera nor IE can deal with.

I also use Opera for normal e-mail; it's sufficient for my needs. I have a free account that I use mostly as a spam-catcher on AOL.com , for which I have to use IE to access the Web client.

I use AOL IM, too, because everybody on my Buddy List does, but once I get the new-to-me computer connected to the net, it has Trillian installed.

You forgot that Seamonkey also has chat. Chatzilla is developed seperately, but it's available for install right along with the other components of the suite. That's why I use it, it really is 'all in one' or about as close as a single product can be.

Nice to see people aren't using Deplorer and Outhouse.

I use an older version of Eudora for email and like it.

There's an "oh crap my Windohs box can be taken over" bug with Firefox at the moment, but in general I like it. Opera is a currently-safer safer browser alternative which I also like.

I use Firefox for my browsing, Gmail for my email, so that's technically Firefox again, and Pidgin for my MSNing/IRCing. I'm considering replacing Pidgin though, because it's a bit barebones and doesn't let me do simple little things like automagically identify myself and join #spaceempires when I connect.

Hmm, only allowed one choice in each group?

At home, I split between Safari and Firefox (primary computer is a Mac). I would use Firefox exclusively, but it has an annoying tendency to crash early and often. And there are a few sites that Safari doesn't render correctly. At work, I use Firefox for development, then test later on Firefox and Safari.

For email, personal email I use Gmail, and at work I use Eudora on one network and Thunderbird on another. That's the regular IT setup...

And chat... on the Mac I use Adium, which is (I believe) Pidgin ported and aqua-fied, and Colloquy for IRC. On PC, I use Trillian. And IM is technically not authorized at work, although there is a Jabber/XMMP module on the IDE we use, so we kinda could use it anyway. But we don't.

What do you do with Firefox when it says, "Fresh Download failed to takeover?" I get that a lot. For example it does it on PBW.

Home:
IE7, Windows Mail (it's part of Vista), and Pidgin (why did you lump it with Trillian? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif)

Work:
IE6, Outlook, and N/A, I can't seem to download any chat programs at work http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

I haven't had that come up before, and never had trouble with PBW - using FreeDownloadManager and the FlashGot firefox addon, although I think when you click a link its just firefox giving it to FDM, not using flashgot - but not sure I just click and it works http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. If you want to try FlashGot, search the Firefox add-ons site for it - there's a link on the firefox add-ons popup you get from Tools menu\Add-ons.

Re: What internet programs do you use, and why?

Win box (work):
Browser - Opera (long time zealot - since v.5).
Mail - The Bat (great filtering capabilities, virtual boxes, etc).
IM - QIP (small, not a bloated one, just works).
IRC - KVirc (functional and handy irc client, and free).
Downloader - Download Master (http/ftp) & µTorrent (best free programs in their class, imo).

Lin box (home):
Browser - Opera (see above).
Mail - Claws Mail (best mail 4 gtk+ env, besides Evolution and Tbird, which I don't like).
IM - Pidgin (best im 4 gtk+ env).
IRC - Xchat (guess what?, eah, same as above).
Downloader - D4X (http/ftp) & Deluge (torrent). (no real gtk+ alternatives).
