Well I finished my utility finally http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
Here it is in all it's glory.
3 formats for you in case you prefer one or dont have one.

One thing I'd like to say is that this was in no way meant to annoy the wonderful creator of the batch file utility.
I personally just think that a graphical interface is better when it can be used.

And I forgot to mention, instructions are enclosed in the compressed files.

I tried to theme it along the SE4 lines.
As I have had no bug reports yet I'm assuming that no-one has tried to launch the game without selecting a mod http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
not so much of a bug really as just an aesthetic this (throws an error message up with no crash)

If there are any bugs or feature requests then just let me know

yes, this indeed rocks. perhaps the selection could default to the normal game to avoid that index out of bounds message, and to provide single click access to playing the normal game. also, when you exit the program it leaves the path.txt pointed to the Last mod used, it would be handy if it defaulted back to the normal path upon exit, incase someone should launch the program from the EXE after using this utility.

all in all, this is superb.

Ok the changes have been made

V1.2 will default to the normal game, and the path setting will be reset to "None" upon program shutdown (I hope) http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

I would prefer to save a game under the mod it is for. It gets to confusing when they are all under the same folder.

Dracus : I agree, but unfortunately that means when you set up the game in the first place you have to remember to specify <modname>/Savegame as the save directory.

I will put *support* for savegame isolation into a later Version, but for now I'll just support Generic Savegames.

Space Empires IV Mod Picker Utility V 1.4 BETA!
This Version takes a ground-breaking step in mod picking history by introducing SAVEGAME functionality.

Note this is a beta and is limited as follows :-
Savegames must be located in Savegame\*.gam (default place in other words)
My current work is both towards specifying the Savegame path yourself and searching in specific <modname>\savegame directories for mods (which will auto-load the correct mod)

Please note that if you enter the wrong player number or password SE4 will NOT tell you
it will just quietly close and look like nothing has happened.

VERY cool. I like the load save-game feature, but is there a way to make it remember player slot and password for individual save slots? also, there is no error reporting if an invalid save slot or password are chosen, which is fine by me, but you may wish to monkey proof it.

edit: and how do we go about getting this utility packaged with the next patch?

That looks really nice. The "x" button looks a little large, though.

I couldn't help but notice the Pirates mod you have in your list.

The "monkey proofing" would need to be done IN-Game because there is no way for my utility to find out passwords for user-numbers (and quite rightly too I might add. Imaging downloading a PBW game and loading my utility which can read game passwords!)

Anyway.. as for "remembering" player slot and passwords... I suppose I could work on something
It would mean storing data in a .ini file for the program (I dont like using the registry) but I can see no problem with this.
I'll work on it for the next Version

As for getting it shipped with SE4, malfador are on holiday so all of my mails are bouncing. It would be a great ego-boost to get it shipped with the product's patches, or even recognised as the official mod picker http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif (Even just a news post on the PBW would do http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon10.gif )

As for the X, well I could knock it down by 1 or 2 pixels (it's currently the same sizeas the in-game X)

It would take any text file and encrypt it by adding a random number to the ASCII value of each character

Ok here is V1.6
This Version adds support for.....
AUTOMAGIC PASSWORDS
Once you've entered your usernumber and password for a particular game, the program will store it for future reference.
The password is encrypted so you dont need to worry about people opening the .ini file to read it.
Also, on a minor note, the X (for closing the prog) has been reduced in size by 2 pixels
SJ : I guess there's just no pleasing some people :P

Short of starting work on an "all-in-one" mod maker I can't really think of anything that needs adding to the Mod-Picker

neither can i, but a mod maker would be handy. it could be simple too. simply a text file editor, but you would have a menu to say, 'edit facilities' or 'edit components.' then you would have a component list where you could scroll through the names of components without having to scroll through all their info, and you could add or remove them, or move them up or down. clicking on one could expand it, or populate its information into an editable text box in the same window. and that would be about it.

unless you wanted to go totally nuts and build in little game-ballancing features like charts to analyze damage ratios for new components you are creating, or ability bonus vs resource costs vs tech requirements for new facilities. I dont think it would need to let you drag and drop abilities or anything, but maybe easy access to the abilities.txt (like in the map editor) would be handy.

Matryx,

Honestly I haven't ungraded to the newst Version yet, so if you have already added this never mind, but I was thinking today it would be cool to have a button to launch the map editor from the mod launcher. Since the map editor references the data files too, it would be kind of useful for those of us wanting to make mod specific maps.

Very slick program.

The map editor uses the path.txt file just like the game does. If you want to make maps with specific mod files like systemnames and planet sizes, you have to change the path.txt file before you launch the map editor.

I was thinking you could snuggle a map editor button next to the "play seiv" button and it would accomplish this.

I am spoiled on this thing. It is very nice.

GeoSchomo : What a wonderful idea.
I have a few things to add to the new Version which I should be releasing at the same time as my Beta Mod Editor.

The main 2 new things will be :-
1. Edit Mods (Fire up the mod editor)
2. Edit Maps (Fire up the map editor)

The bad thing about the map editor is that if you have edited the spacial entities (stars, asteroids, storms etc) it reads the data files just fine.. but NOT the pictures
it uses the default SE4 pictures http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif
still nothing I can do about that.

But seriously, a simple text editing interface for the AI_general.txt file would be a good start and should be fairly easy to do. (He says, since he isn't the one doing it. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif )

What would be really nice is if it would cross-reference the settings.txt and RacialTraits.txt and tell me if the characteristics and values I have selected are over the 2000,3000,5000 point limits for the "Race Opt 1(,2, and 3) Characteristic" lines in the AI_general.txt file.

The other AI files are beyond me so someone else should comment there.

My apologies if anyone downloaded V1.7
there was a minor bug where it wouldn't save your passwords properly
this has now been corrected and you can download the fixed V1.7

If you have a Version prior to V1.7 then you are unaffected.

Another minor update to V1.7
If you have found that you cant find your savegames in a mod's directory.. and you also notice that the mod is the Last one in the list on the left then this is the update you need!
For some reason I had a -1 where I didn't need one so it never reached the end of the list http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
Anyway.. here it is. A V small update but a good one nonetheless.

I couldn't even figure out the pattern. I was trying to figure that out before I sent it to you as a bug. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong.

Yes it was a confusing bug.
I never noticed it before because I don't have any savegames for my development mod (which was the Last one in my list).
It's only because I moved my SE4 directory that I found it out (My pirates&nomads became the Last in the list and suddenly I lost my savegames?!?!).
In future if you want to send a bug report and *then* try to figure out the trend in the bug http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
It's better that I know about these things so I can (try to) fix them.

Understood. It was like the only thing I could say was "Sometimes it doesn't work right." Coming from a tech support background, I HATE that, so I was trying not to do it to you.

Ok here it is!
The long awaited (or maybe not) Mod Selection Utility V2.0!

New in this Version :-

There has been a change to the ModInfo Format.
Old formats still work with the mod editor, but the new format supports 2 new items. E-mail Address, and Website.
The new format is as follows :-
1. Modinfo2 Must be typed Exactly! or it will assume the old format
2. Obsolete:- Space Filler
3. False:- Whether the mod is enabled
4. ModName:- Space Filler
5. Pirates and Nomads The Mod Title
6. Version:- Space Filler
7. V2.1 The Version of the mod (It has moved up some lines)
8. Author:- Space Filler
9. Suicide Junkie Author Name
10. E-mail:- Space Filler
11. raaa@weeble.com E-mail address of author
12. Website:- Space Filler
13. www.weeble.com/raa Website of mod
14. Description:- Space Filler
15. onwards….. The description of your mod. Lines 15-99999999


Also, you can now add mods in other directories (i.e. subdirectories)
There are 2 ways of doing this.
1. Click the Add Mod button in the top left corner of the Mod Selector.
The program will prompt you for a directory, and when you click Add it will update itself, and re-launch to show the new mod.
If it doesn’t show up, make sure the Mod Directory is correct!


Finally, there have been a couple of minor fixes and improvements and the description box has had it's font sized down so you can see more of it now.

I have uploaded a sample ModInfo.txt for the new Version.
Dont forget. Old Versions still work, but the new one is preferred as it adds more details.
