What map are you going to play at?
I sign up as Lanka.

Another question: will hosting become more rare at late stages of the game?

Argitoth January 9th, 2008 10:49 AM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Map will be large random. Host will only pause on request. Other than that there will be a strict 24 hour period. The max time I will pause the game is 3 24 hour periods.

Re: Dominion (CLOSED) - Waiting for pretender files...

I haven't played in a non-Llamaserver game yet, so tell me if this is right: I connected to your server and apparently added my god for Mictlan. The text next to Mictlan changed from "open" to "human controlled" or whatever. Am I done until the game starts?

ano January 9th, 2008 03:22 PM

Re: Dominion (CLOSED) - Waiting for pretender file

One more question to host: will I be able to retrieve .trn files to local computer or they are stored at server indefinitely?
Just to clear the game procedure...

Not sure how the dominions file system works, however I know it does work so I don't know why you'd need special care.

It occurs to me also that I'm used to being notified of turn advancements and deadlines by Llamaserver. How does that work in this type of game?

Argitoth January 9th, 2008 05:33 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

There won't be a notification unless it's possible to set one up with servers.

Best way to work it:

1. Connect to server. You get told what nation you have on your drive for that game.
2. Confirm nation. You are asked for password.
3. Type password. See 'Receiving turn file' message. End up at screen showing all nations, with info about deadline.
4. GET OUT. Do NOT enter map.
5. Once safely disconnected from server, choose 'Play an Existing Game'. Type your password, take your turn, revise it as many times you wish. At this point, server does not know about this.
6. Once you like your turn, connect to server again, type password, see "Uploading turn", you're done.
7. You can still connect and revise your turn, until server hosts.

By the way, each new turn overwrites old turn. If you want record of all your game, you have to save .trn and .2h files before uploading on server.

(I know my English sucks, but I'm too old to bother or let it bother me)

Argitoth January 9th, 2008 11:34 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Oh, now I know what was asked.

Yeah, all you do is login to download. You CAN ENTER THE MAP! Nikolai. You just don't want to press "E" you want to press "options --> quit without saving" or whatever.

Bananadine January 10th, 2008 12:20 AM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Hmm, I seem to have the Worthy Heroes mod loaded for another game I am playing. Does this affect this game? Should I unload it or something? It's odd that the mod's activation status seems to be associated with my Dominions installation, rather than with any particular game.

So many questions new players have!

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

uhhhhhhhhhhh...................

does the mod change anything about the pretender creation process?

you should upload a new pretender just to be safe, however, I'm not going to wait for you so if you don't upload a new pretender on time we'll just have to see what happenes.

Is the game started? I didn't see any changes at the server and now it seems to be down.

I think it is a pretty simple mod and it should pose no danger except possibly when I am actually taking my turns. I think it very likely that my pretender is fine, but I thought I'd make sure by asking. But... do I have to manually deactivate the mod before I take a turn, and then reactivate it before I take a turn in the other game? That would be lame! Does anybody know about this?

thejeff January 10th, 2008 12:05 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

When you choose a mod it is active for game or pretender creation. After a game has been created, it will always try to load the mods it was started with.

So, no. There's no need to turn mods on and off when taking turns. As long as you have them installed everything will work fine.

The only potential problem is if you have a mod turned when you create your pretender that actually changes the pretender you make. It's safest to have all the game's mods, and no others, on when making a pretender.

Why is it a bad idea to simply do your turn on the server?

Sivoc January 11th, 2008 07:12 AM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

I can't find any reason why it should be a bad idea.
But it is always nice to have a trn file of a particular battle or maybe an enemy SC.

Ironhawk January 11th, 2008 07:28 AM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Its not bad to do it on the server but there is a slight element of risk. The problem occurs when you are the last player out (or near last) - if you accidentally hit end turn, your turn will automatically be submitted. If you just happen to be the last player there is no way to correct this. You are screwed. Even if you are near last, others can complete before you do and you may become last and not know it.

Generally, what people will do is connect to the server to get their turn then immediately disconnect. Play the turn offline (where you can end turn all you like, accidentally or not) and then connect to the server once the turn is complete.

P.S.
Sivoc, you need a less annoying avatar pic

One more thing. I wonder what is master password in such a game for?

llamabeast January 11th, 2008 09:54 AM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

The master password works in place of any of the players' passwords. It's useful if a player disappears, so they can be set to AI without knowing their password.

Argitoth, any chance you could change the thread title to something a bit more specific (e.g. the game name)? It keeps on confusing me.

Argitoth January 11th, 2008 01:33 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Tell me exactly what name you would like me to use because Dominion "is" the name of the server. I don't know what you want. However, you should bookmark this thread.

he wants you to give this game some kind of nickname, like the other games got, it dosn't matter what it is..

llamabeast January 11th, 2008 02:00 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Yeah, it doesn't really matter, but the obvious thing to use would be "War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (started)".

Nikolai January 11th, 2008 08:14 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Well guys, I think I am beaten before starting.

I have five neighbors. Two have 5+ elephants, other three have 20+ heavy horse each, and assorted infantry. I got hit with two unrests on turn 2... and it will take me two-three turns to break out.

I think I'll go AI soon. There is no point unless I get some luck my way.

Yeah, but for example people don't like to follow the rules, like me. I am a veteran dominions player and so I did not follow the rules of "noobs only"

Nikolai, to deal with your elephant infestation, you have to use your brain a little more.

-Armor doesn't help much against elephants. Recruit a large army of cheap units.
-Elephants have low armor. They are easily killed by lots of small units.
-Independent armies with elephants should have a small force. If you have fast-moving units, recruit them, put them at the front left and set to attack rearmost. Units don't even have to be fast sometimes.
-Archers should be set to fire at archers.

You started a newbie game for you to be in and you're not even a newbie? That's, er, unusual.

lebarjack January 12th, 2008 02:15 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Well, I am not really a newbie too. Or at least I was not two years ago, when I was playing Dominion 2.
Considering how Vanheim slaughtered my poor Pythium troops in my last & first dom3 multiplayer game, I guess I deserve to be a newbie again ^^

Argitoth January 12th, 2008 03:45 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Nikolai, I didn't mean to be rude when I said "use your brain a little more." I was just saying that as a general statement, everyone needs to use their brain a little more when trying to overcome problems like this.

llamabeast, I started the server for my friend who has never played Dominions. I'm here to help him out.

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

That's strange. Every body seem to have played his turn but the hosting doesn't start. Wasn't the server set on quickhost?

Argitoth January 13th, 2008 03:11 PM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Yeah, it *was* on quickhost, but... meh, the way I do hosting is very random right now. Sometimes I like quickhost, sometimes I don't. I'll just send PMs to announce new turns when needed.

ano January 14th, 2008 06:41 AM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Especially I think it would be better in any respect if hosting was done in the same way all the time.

Argitoth January 14th, 2008 11:16 AM

Re: War of Dominion - Early Ages: Noobie Game (OPE

Sorry Ano, can't do that just yet due to my computer getting shut down unexpectedly sometimes. I sometimes can't remember how many hours were left so then I just turn on quickhost and turn off the timer.
