Primea, newbie MA game (started)

1 Attachment(s)
Some people asked for new newbie games, here's one.
Please only sign up if you're new to MP gaming here.

The setup:

Game version will be 3.14 with no mods. 48 hours quickhost.
Game age will be MA. Sign up with your preferred nation.
We'll use the map Primea, which is attached to this post. In case the map creator posts a fixed version, we'll use that one - I had to assign the province tags myself for this one.
We'll play on a networked server, you can upload/download your turns through the in-game interface.

I want at least 6 players to start the game, we can support up to 12 (in that case it'll get crowded). I'll wait for your applications until Wednesday, then we'll prepare the game so that we can start by the weekend. Come on, sign up!

Create your pretenders then

Very well, I think we're able to play a nice game with this. Everybody who signed up here, you're accepted, please proceed to create your pretender gods. When you are done, then mail me the file from your newlords folder in the game's savegame directory to the following email address:
http://bannerbreak.com/banners/7/256...2943919622.gif

<font color="red">EDIT, Important:</font> make sure that you set a password for your pretender god. And include that password in the email for me, just as a precaution.

I'll start the game when all the gods are in. You'll get an email when the game starts. Your sending email address will get added to the game's email notification script. If you need any further help, search in the the forum or ask here.

Atlantis, I hope you are aware that there isn't too much sea in here. On the other hand, it's guaranteed to be yours.

Pretender sent http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Well, don't blame Atlantis, it's nice from him to don't join the butcher that we gonna know on the land :p

That map, with 12 nations on it, seem so small for a newbe like me ^^

Edit : oups, forgot the pass :s

Re: Create your pretenders then

I am getting old... Please make sure that you set a password in the pretender creation, and send me the password in the email as well.

Yes, it is getting crowded and some people might be out of the game early. It's a survival of the fittest! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/stupid.gif

Shigure February 19th, 2008 11:41 AM

Re: Create your pretenders then

Pretender sent, complete with password.

As for the crowded map, each day when the people of Marignon awaken we call forth the traditional prayer: "Oh God... please don't let me die today! Tomorrow would be so much better!"

Re: Create your pretenders then

Arco pretender created, email sent. Let the carnage begin!

My first newbie game ended like this, but people may choose to end the game sooner if the outcome seems clear.

No, this is a networked game. You play it through the game interface, or you can supply startup parameters to the game which let you connect instantly. In case you can't connect to the game at all you might be behind some zany firewall. Try connecting to valhalla.techno-mage.com port 4564 just for testing purposes, this is a currently running game.

So if i did understand well, we just have to connect to the address you'll give us every day to give our orders, and the turn will be validate every 48 hours ?
Maybe we can take 24 for the first turns, can't we ?

Cause i don't understand very well the "48 hours quickhost" term. Hope it's not a game in 48 hours ^^

Anyway it's a great chance to have that host, thank you.

Edit : concerning the firewall, i'm using one, plus a "routeur" ( don't know the english name, but the box which share the internet connection serve of firewall too ). I did'nt open any port and it seem i'm able to connect to that game so http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

48 hours is the time period that you have for handing in your turn orders after the turn hosted. If you don't upload your turn orders within that time, it will host regardless and you'll get a stale turn. quickhost means that as soon as all players have uploaded their turns, the game hosts. So usually the first turns take less than 24 hours, because there isn't really much to do and think about.

Firewalls are usually only used to restrict inbound traffic, which could be harmful to your network. Those won't be any trouble. Some people are on very restricted networks that limit outbound traffic, too, for example quite a few providers may filter out traffic known as P2P. Shouldn't be a problem. Some filter out ALL traffic except to a very limited number of ports that are allowed, like 80 for HTTP connections, 21 for FTP and 25 for SMTP mail, and nothing else. Company networks might have this for their employees.

Basically, each turn the host will wait up to 48 hours for everyone to play their turns. If everyone finishes sooner than that, it will automatically proceed to the next turn.

Yes, I have received all the pretenders and passwords now. I will start the game shortly. You'll receive emails from the server when the first turn is generated with instructions.

Great !

lch February 22nd, 2008 12:47 PM

Game started

The game has started. Everybody should have received an email with the info for the game. If you have not, then please check your spam folder and add the sending address to your white list, or whatever makes your mail server not classify the turn notifications as spam. If you want to be removed from the turn notification at any time (presumably when you're out of the game at the latest), then please send an email back asking so or send me a PM, I don't keep track of who's defeated every turn.

Feel free to discuss the game openly here. Diplomacy is one of the strongest forces in the game, so make sure to get in contact with your neighbors, you might be winning an ally.

Pangaea armies have set foot on Primea !

Got in, got the turn done. Had to resort to a DOS prompt with Ich's suggested path; I was unable to get to the server in-game. It kept saying 'could not be found' or some such.

Arco is ready to rock!

StormCrow434 February 22nd, 2008 09:46 PM

And Turn 2 done...I seem to be outnumbered 2-1 by all my immediate neighbors. And Shinuyama got those Mercs...

Funny : it looks much the same to me about independants...

However, the mail speaks to me about some Rhoscrowther game... Anything wrong or will it correct itself in time ?

Strange, that should not happen. If you enter the host name in the game or as a parameter shouldn't matter at all.

Do NOT underestimate the independants. Especially do not try to rush independants with a lone pretender god without gear.

Ugh. I have improved the game scripts before hosting. I used to have to edit things everywhere, now I only need to update game name and port variables on top of the script. But it seems that I failed to remember doing so in this script. Thanks for reporting this, it is fixed it now!

kasnavada February 23rd, 2008 07:20 AM

Re: Game started

No problem about reporting it. I'll tell you that it worked for the next turn.

Holy_bricklayer February 23rd, 2008 03:01 PM

Re: Game started

I have a question, what's those crown around the map ? Never see something like this before even when i was testing primea. I thunk it's players position first but, there aren't 12 of them.

Anyway, i wish everyone good luck and fun for that first game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ( you see Caelum god is nice, remeber that, we're just little birdys, you won't hurt a little bird will ya ? )

Edit : wow ! an other question concerning the validations of turns. I ve just look at the result here, and i was'nt suppose to play my turn, i was planning to do that after lunch. Anyway i just use the commend "save and quit" and i saw that my turn was considering done ( on the internet page for primea game ). Is there a way ( for the next turn, those which need more time, to save our orders and don't validate our turn ? I hope i'm clear enought to be understood.

A 'Save and Exit' is treated the same as an 'End Turn'. In other words, it treats your turn as complete. However, you CAN go back in and make changes to the turn any time before the last person completes it. Right now we're waiting for Ulm, so if you get back in before he finishes you should be able to make some changes.

I am assuming that if you are in and making changes, the game will not host until you finish, even if Ulm signs on and completes his turn while you are 'working' on your corrections.

Ich posted elsewhere that it is best to download the turns and play 'offline'...I am not sure how to do this. Ich, could you give a brief explanation how to do this for us newbies? Or give us a thread where we can look it up?

They're called victory points. I haven't quite figured out how to start a game from the command line without having some of them in the game. If you conquer this province, it will raise the Dominion of your god by one (like temples).

If the last player hands in his turn orders then the server will host, regardless if there are other players connected or not. The server doesn't know you might still be preparing that turn.

Connect to the server, enter your password. Then your client will download the (new) turn file to your computer. When you then can see the server overview with the nation flags, immediately disconnect again. You can then prepare your turns offline via the "Play a local game" menu. When you are finished preparing the turn, connect again and your client will automatically upload the turn file. Do NOT connect again until you are completely done with preparing the turn.

Hum, I don't receive mails about the whatever other game, but ain't I supposed to receive a mail for every turn for the current game ?

If not, ok, it's fine but else there is something wrong.
