FruitBat - EA newbie game - started

1 Attachment(s)
Okay, I think it's time for me to start a new game for new/newish players. I'd recommend 0-2 games - if you've played more than that and would like to play regardless, post here and you can play if we're short of players. This should be a nice, fun and friendly game, a reasonable size but not too huge, and generally ideal for new players (that's the plan, at least).

This will be an EA game and will use the Worthy Heroes mod. Renaming will be on, graphs will be on, and everything else will be standard.

The map will be my modified version of Parganos, which is modified (a) to have a much more fair and even spread of terrain types, (b) to have fair-ish start positions, and (c) to have no gold or magic sites in the seas - so this will be a land-nation only game.

The players are:

Pangaea - kasnavada
Abysia - reinselc
T'ien Ch'i - Donny
Lanka - chrispedersen
Ulm - StormCrow434
Caelum - ComTrav
Marverni - fantasma
Tir na n'Og - Hully

I am interested I am currently playing my first MP game. I will take Abysia. Where do I find the worthy heroes mod?

Aezeal February 22nd, 2008 10:14 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

I'm interested but since I wanted to play pythium in another game but couldn't I'm eager to play MA pyth.. so my question is... will you start a MA game in the very near future cus then I'll pass on this one and would like to reserve a spot there..

If not I'm sure I'll find a nice race to play in EA too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

I'm interested!
Actually I don't have any MP experience.
I'll try T'ien Chi - I love it!

reinselc February 22nd, 2008 11:19 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

hey aezeal I think pythium is in the EA too, a little different, but similar.

chrispedersen February 23rd, 2008 12:02 AM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

Interested in either Tien Chi, or barring that Lanka.
What is the mighty heroes mods, and how often will the game be played?

StormCrow434 February 23rd, 2008 01:11 AM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

This would make Game3, although we're only two turns into Game2. Would really like to try EA Ulm.

This would be first 'Mod' game...

ComTrav February 23rd, 2008 02:25 AM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

Caelum please...

And what exactly does Worthy Heroes do? I see it a lot, so its obviously a popular mod.

So far, no MP experience.

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

Okay wow, that filled up fast! I will just go and update the first post with a list of players. Maybe I will open up a second game, being as this filled so fast.

llamabeast February 23rd, 2008 01:33 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

Right, everyone who posted has a spot except for seda (sorry; slightly too late) and Aezeal (surely you don't count as a newbie still?! - in any case, I gave priority to the newer players).

Re Worthy Heroes - what it does is add more heroes to the game, and in general make them a little more powerful. Not overpowered, but it's nice if, when you get a hero, they're quite useful. The latest version is 1.8 - I'll turn my mention of it in the first post to a link in a minute.

The next thing to do is to design and upload your pretenders. Here's how to do that:

- Make sure you have the same mods enabled as the game you're playing in (Preferences->Mod Preferences) although only mods affecting pretender design, such as Conceptual Balance, actually matter
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions. Don't set a password, since for PBEM games they're not helpful and occasionally annoying (e.g. if you need a sub)
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have the game name 'FruitBat' in the subject line of your e-mail

We'll see how long everyone takes to do that, but I reckon it shouldn't take more than a day or two.

llamabeast February 23rd, 2008 01:35 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

I will create another game as an overflow as well - I'll call it VampireBat following the theme, and make it Late Age to make it appropriately dark for the name. No Ermor or R'lyeh though.

Aezeal February 23rd, 2008 02:22 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

Lol if I'm not in this one (I seem to be 9th) could the new game be MA then (and me on pythium) else I'll play niefel in EA http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I'm not a newb? lol anyway I was too late I agree..
But really I only played 2 games.. and I was rushed in another one...

but create a MA game then http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

llamabeast February 23rd, 2008 03:06 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA game for new players

Have you only played two games Aezeal? Sorry then. I guess it's your high post count and the fact that you seem to have been around for a while that's thrown me.

I'll create a normal MA game soon anyway I think, so you shouldn't have to wait too long. MA Pythium is fun, I agree.

StormCrow434 February 23rd, 2008 04:18 PM

Mods and Maps

OK, got the WH 1.8 Mod downloaded. Activated it and created my Pretender. Email in transit.

You mentioned a modified Parganos map? Is this something we'd need to download as well?

ComTrav February 23rd, 2008 06:19 PM

Re: Mods and Maps

I dl'd the mod from http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/thr...ev=#Post561512

but I can't get it to work. Nothing reads the file, and I put it in the mods folder and I can't activate it on mod preferences.

llamabeast February 23rd, 2008 06:21 PM

Re: Mods and Maps

quantum uploaded it in rar format, which is like a zip, but WinZip can't open it. If you scroll down a few posts on the same page you can see I uploaded a zip version.

llamabeast:

Normal game? Don't tempt me, I am already in hmm... 4 games.

And yep, there are some newbies that write a lot. Really good newbies http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Trying to know as much as they can about the game. And post count also counts whole shrapnel forums, not just dom3, I think.

Re: Mods and Maps

Pretender sent.

Aezeal February 24th, 2008 12:55 AM

Re: Mods and Maps

I actually am not that experienced... I played my first game with you I think an was rushed, then I played 2 turns of a game before I had to go on vacation and then 2 games for real.

I've been modding a bit when I bought the game, but since my last great map didn't get players to start on it I've quit that too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I actually think I've not even played more than 10-20 SP games either ... I don't like SP anymore now I've seen MP... last game I seemed to be doing well but once I encountered experienced players I noticed I'm doing something wrong.. my large armies where slaughtered (but I don't mind loosing that much) I actually don't need to play in a newb game I like loosing (but learning) from exp. players much better http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

How many people can be in game?
It looks like all slots are busy ?
I would play Niefelheim... or water race ?

pretender sent.

llamabeast, where do we get the map from?

llamabeast February 24th, 2008 05:11 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Right, I've added the map to the first post. It also includes a modified map image, which I think looks nicer than the Parganos map that comes with the game.

Hully February 24th, 2008 05:33 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Ok, I've downloaded the map, 3 files. I assume we just drop these into the map folder?

Well now having done just that, Dominions is listing two identical maps both:

Parganos(Llama's Fix) DS,8 Land + 1 sea player

Is this correct? or have I just rushed ahead... in the excitement!

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Yes I think that's right. Only need one more pretender and we can get started. Abysia is looking forward to a nice warm world http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

We are open to all who would like to join 'pretenders for a warmer world).....PM me a let me know if your interested in a non-aggression pact or overt military alliance.

llamabeast February 24th, 2008 09:13 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Hully - yep, that's me being muppety and not giving different descriptions for the two maps. One has dead seas, one doesn't. I'll fix that soon and reupload. But in any case it doesn't matter too much - all you actually need for this game is the image file (only the server needs the .map file).

Donny February 25th, 2008 11:37 AM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Seems like everything is set. Let's get started!

Holy T'ien Ch'i welcomes reasonable pacts from every nation. Our people love peace, and we will try to bring peace to the world.

However, we are NEVER AFRAID OF WAR.

reinselc February 25th, 2008 08:04 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Which one are we playing with the dead seas or not?

llamabeast February 25th, 2008 08:06 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Dead seas, although you guys don't actually have to do anything with the maps apart from make sure they're in the maps folder.

I'd intended to start the game tonight, but am knackered and about to get into bed. I'll do it tomorrow.

reinselc February 25th, 2008 10:28 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Excellent news on the dead oceans...us Abysians never were too fond that stuff they call "water".

llamabeast February 26th, 2008 07:37 AM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Okay, the game's started! The first turn will have 48 hours on the clock in case of difficulties, and subsequent ones will have 24 hours.

How it works is that the server hosts either 24 hours after the last hosting or when everyone's turns are in, whichever is sooner. This means that the hosting time tends to gradually creep forwards. It's important to be aware of that. Remember you can check out the game status at any time at www.llamaserver.net .

I'd like to ask for a volunteer to admin the game. The admin has to do two things:

1) If a player asks for an extension or anything then do it (provided it's reasonable; a day or two is reasonable, if they are going away for a week they should get a sub). It's super easy via the interface on the website.

2) If the admin gets knocked out of the game, pass the password on to one of the remaining players.

It's a really easy, almost zero-work job, but it keeps me from having to carefully watch 20-odd game threads (which I tried for a bit, and it hurt).

Right, enjoy the game guys!

fantasma February 26th, 2008 12:32 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Thanks llamabeast for setting up the server and the games, that really runs great (as I can tell so far).

If nobody objects I can do the admin stuff.

As we are on the subject, I am away over the easter weekend, Thursday morning (20th) till Tuesday noon (25th), or 4+ days. If several other players are taking days off, we could stop the timer or I have to find a sub, provided I will be still in the game.

Anyways, the tribes of Marverni, used to fight it out amongst themselves are now hearing the call of the awaking god and are marching forward united, so beware and do not cross their path, as they have a hot temper. However, the advice of the druids is usually heeded, and these are wise and peaceful, unless provoked. If so, they will turn into formidable foes!

So everybody interested in trading, alliances or just a little chat, is welcome to contact me.

Hully February 26th, 2008 01:17 PM

fantasma

Thanks for picking up the admin side, appreciated.

Yeah I'm away for a few days at Easter 26,27,28 but I can get a sub no problem. I'm happy to go with the consensus about a break for Easter.

fantasma sent you a private message, outlining the advantage of Marverni becoming a vassal state lol

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

I think a break for easter is a great idea. I for one hope that we can all be flexible if people ask for a day or two.

Good gaming to all!

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

No plan for the easter holidays, so everything is fine for me.

"Confucius said: 'If you would govern a state of a thousand chariots (a small-to-middle-size state),
you must pay strict attention to business, be true to your word, be economical in expenditure and love the people.
You should use them according to the seasons.'"

All the possible solutions will be fine for the holy T'ien Ch'i.

StormCrow434 February 26th, 2008 09:00 PM

Easter Break

Ulm is easy...just not cheap! A break at Easter would be fine.

Klaus, the FrostFather, is breaking free! His people, the tribe of Ulm, rejoice and set out to gain land for his glory! Those who oppose us shall wither and die in his all consuming Cold...

llamabeast February 26th, 2008 09:01 PM

Re: FruitBat - EA newbie game - upload pretenders

Thanks so much for offering to do the admin fantasma. Much appreciated. I'll send you a PM with the password.

reinselc February 26th, 2008 09:21 PM

Abysia NAP proposal

Abysia here ~ I don't need a break for easter, but if most of the others do that is fine with me.

Stormcrow....I am saddened to learn of your desire to embrace cold. We Abysians find anything below 100F a little chilly, but your lands won't be below 90F, right?

Anyone who is interested in a Non Aggression Pact with Abysia let me know either via in game message or PM. My proposed terms would be that either of us can cancel at any time for any reason, but that there could be no offensive action taken for 3 turns after.

For example, if you informed me of you desire to cancel prior to turn #1 resolving, on turn #4 you could attack me.

Let me know.
