FunnelEaredBat - MA newbie game: started

Since FruitBat, VampireBat and GhostBat filled up insanely fast, I'm creating a ridiculous fourth overflow game for new/newish players. I'd recommend players who've played 0-2 games previously - if you've played more than that and would like to play regardless, post here and you can play if we're short of players. This should be a nice, fun and friendly game, a reasonable size but not too huge, and generally ideal for new players (that's the plan, at least).

This will be an MA game and will use the Worthy Heroes mod. Renaming will be on, graphs will be on, and everything else will be standard.

The map will be my modified version of Parganos, which is modified (a) to have a much more fair and even spread of terrain types, (b) to have fair-ish start positions, and (c) to have no gold or magic sites in the seas - so this will be a land-nation only game.

Please sign up and choose a nation!

The players are:

Pangaea - kasnavada
Vanheim - MartialDoctor
Abysia - Profanicus
Ulm - Wookie1977
Marignon - LordCalvert
Arcoscephale - SiyfkA
C'tis - Peacekeeper
Bandar Log - elbnar

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

...why not just make a bigger game instead of 8 players?

llamabeast February 25th, 2008 06:10 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

I think 8 is a nice number for a newbie game. Larger games are fun too, but obviously they end up being much bigger affairs for those players which survive. When I started I played a series of 4-player games which I enjoyed hugely. I think 8 is a good number though, since it also allows for some diplomacy.

kasnavada February 25th, 2008 07:39 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Well, I think I have time to enjoy a third game. Pangaea ?

However, if another person wants my place for his (her?) first games, I'll leave it.

llamabeast February 25th, 2008 07:40 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Three games at once? Feel free, but I would probably advise against it unless you have a lot of free time. At first it's not a problem, but if you survive to late game in all three it could be a bit much. On the other hand if you are already in late game in the first one you probably have a good feel for it.

MartialDoctor February 25th, 2008 07:58 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Alright, I'll take Vanheim for this one then.

Llamabeast, may I ask why you like to put the graphs on?

llamabeast February 25th, 2008 08:01 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Personally, I just think it's fun to look at the graphs every turn. As a new player it's particularly good because you get some idea of whether you're expanding as fast as you should be, and so on.

kasnavada February 25th, 2008 08:26 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Well, I'm in early game for all 3, but I do have lots of free time.

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Sign me up! I'll give Abysia a run if I may ...

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Also can I reserve Ulm for my brother, he cannot access this site from work atm and will sign up tonight.
Ta!

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

If I could save a spot for LordCalvert as Marignon, I'd appreciate it. Since nobody wanted to swap out of VampireBat, I think this is the only open newbie game left.

llamabeast February 26th, 2008 07:14 AM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Profanicus - sure. Does he have a separate CD though? You won't be able to play in the same game with the same CD unfortunately.

Profanicus February 26th, 2008 07:16 AM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Yes he has his own copy of the game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

This is profanicus's brother , lock me in

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Just confirming what my son said earlier. I'm in as Marignon since I couldn't get into GhostBat. I might actually have to treat him nice now...

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

I have played in more than 2 games (about 6) but have not played for a good 5 months, so im a bit rusty =) Im eager to get back in, if theres space and no one objects to my experience. Id like to play Ermor.

SiyfkA February 26th, 2008 07:46 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

I'll play! This would be my second ever mp game. I'd like to go Arcoscephale.

Peacekeeper February 26th, 2008 07:51 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

id like to play. I played 3-4 dominions 2 games but that was a while ago and this will be my first dom3 game.

If i get in, id like C'tis please.

llamabeast February 26th, 2008 08:50 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

JanIm and johnarryn - it looks like this game might fill up with really new newbies, who I would like to give priority to. Would you guys be interested in joining Uakari, which is another open MA game (but not a specifically newbie one)?

johnarryn February 26th, 2008 10:37 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

That would be fine.

Janlm February 27th, 2008 03:26 AM

I am a real newbie, but sure i'll join

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Could I get in? Newblet here.

Will play as Bandar Log. Monkeys ftw

Dragonninjaakira February 28th, 2008 04:12 AM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

If there is room for one more could I sign up as Pythium? I've played 3 MP games but lost early in all of them. So i'm still a noob...

llamabeast February 28th, 2008 05:46 AM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

And we are full! Amazing, 4 newbie games in just a few days. Dragonninjaakira - sorry, you just missed the boat. If you're willing to take your chances in a non-newbie game you could sign up to Uakari though.

Right everyone, here's how to upload your pretenders:

- Make sure you have the same mods enabled as the game you're playing in (Preferences->Mod Preferences) although only mods affecting pretender design, such as Conceptual Balance, actually matter
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions. Don't set a password, since for PBEM games they're not helpful and occasionally annoying (e.g. if you need a sub)
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have the game name 'FunnelEaredBat' in the subject line of your e-mail

We'll see how long everyone takes to do that, but I reckon it shouldn't take more than a day or two.

kasnavada February 28th, 2008 04:17 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Done, the pretender is sent.

Peacekeeper February 28th, 2008 05:26 PM

Ctis has been sent

Marignon is in. Time to burn heretics!

llamabeast February 29th, 2008 09:14 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Okay, just waiting for one pretender. I've set the game up to start automatically when that one comes in, so we are almost off!

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Noooo! I am a new MP player, haven't played outside of a couple LAN games with 3 other buddies. I don't want to play in a non-new player only game lest I get crushed and potentially ruin the game for other players. I was dismayed to see that this 4th overflow has already filled. Are there any other new player games available?

elbnar March 1st, 2008 06:31 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

it's sent, sorry for the delay :O

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Well I just had my first turn and was wondering what the victory conditions were for this game.
couldn't see it anywhere

LordCalvert March 2nd, 2008 01:34 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

The victory conditions are these: "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women."

kasnavada March 2nd, 2008 02:20 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Errr I don't agree with the lamentations.

They'll all be maenads before the game is ended. So there will be no lamentations !

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Since the next patch with the scale bug fix is due within a week, I was wondering if we will be switching to it?

llamabeast March 3rd, 2008 08:39 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Yep, we'll switch to it immediately it comes out, but we won't wait for it.

turn 2 is away...

good luck everyone! fear my monkeys!

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Now that 3.15 is out, when will we be switching?

Profanicus March 6th, 2008 05:40 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

The Llamaserver has been patched to 3.15 so I would say we do it now, ready for turn 8!

"Happily, as players it is impossible to do anything wrong. You can take your current turns using either 3.14 or 3.15, it doesn't make any difference. Next turn you will have to take using 3.15 - but if you try to open it using 3.14 it won't let you, so again it is impossible to make a mistake."

elbnar March 6th, 2008 10:08 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

ooh, didn't even notice the new patch. Thanks.

llamabeast March 8th, 2008 01:43 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Hey guys, should have done this a while ago: I'd like to ask for a volunteer to admin this game. The admin has to do two things:

1) If a player asks for an extension or anything then do it (provided it's reasonable; a day or two is reasonable, if they are going away for a week they should get a sub). It's super easy via the interface on the website.

2) If the admin gets knocked out of the game, pass the password on to one of the remaining players.

It's a really easy, almost zero-work job, but it keeps me from having to carefully watch 30-odd game threads (which I tried for a bit, and it hurt).

LordCalvert March 8th, 2008 01:49 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Since I'm a grumpy old retiree, I'll volunteer to do it. I'll probably be asking for the first extension next weekend as I'll be tied up running an SCA event here in deepest, darkest.

llamabeast March 8th, 2008 01:50 PM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - MA game for new players

Brilliant, thanks LordCalvert. I'll PM you the password.

What's SCA? To me it means Student Community Action, but I'm guessing that's not it.

These guys:

My own local group

I've been involved with them since 1984. The character used as my avatar is from an SCA-related cartoon.

I too am wondering about the victory conditions.
I know it is supposed to be "standard victory conditions", but then why are there Victory Point crowns in some of the provinces?

Yeah, I had the same question in my last game. Here is the response I got:

"Yeah, there are VPs for some reason, but they don't really mean anything but a little increase in dominion when you take 'em when there's no VP victory."

MartialDoctor March 11th, 2008 09:46 AM

Re: FunnelEaredBat - Victory Conditions?

The forces of Ulm have decided to invade one of my provinces unprovoked. It seems they wish to start a war!
