OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
For the Designers (praise be upon them) to see, and judge of worthy/unworthy to bother with in the run-up to next version... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Czech Province Reconstruction Team that just deployed to A-stan (Loghar province) would is equipped with 20+ armoured M1114 HMMWVs. http://zpravy.idnes.cz/foto.asp?r=zp...4_zpr_nato_inc Vehicles are armed with either 30mm AGL or 12.7mm HMG (I think DShK but not for sure, will report) and 7.62mm MMG (interesting - it's going to be PKT, not the standard vz.59 GPMG). While the number is small, they're OTOH in an area where something is most likely to happen so adding them might be a good idea? Czech Army is aslo planning a purchase of four (yes, you read correctly, whole four!!!) MRV patrol cars, most likely candidate is Dingo AFAIK but there's some mess around it. Czech Army also received Swedish RBS-70 MkII Bolide SAM's. http://www.army.cz/scripts/detail.php?id=7347 Pandur deal seems to have trouble, but it'd seem that they will be eventually bought, just with significantly less Pandur-based support vehicles. Also, back to light combatants, our special forces in A-Stan used and use armed Land Rover patrol vehicles: http://www.601skss.cz/archiv/lrd-sov.html http://forum.valka.cz/viewtopic.php/...der-Armoured-3 Armament: Either DShK or AGS-17, plus pintle mounted PKB. Land Rovers are used also in standard variants as utility cars etc. Both LR90 and 110, variants soft top, hard top and Station Wagon. http://forum.valka.cz/viewtopic.php/...Rover-Defender There is also locally developped armored variant but dunno whether in any use: http://forum.valka.cz/viewtopic.php/...er-pancerovany Last but not least, I'd suggest these two changes to existing units/weapons: 1) To my knowledge, Czechoslovakia never used ZPU-2 and ZPU-4 machinegun complets, instead vz.53 quad DShK was used: http://forum.valka.cz/viewtopic.php/...53-ctyrkulomet EDIT: Units: ZPU-2 086, ZPU-4 087, weapons: ZPU-2 055, ZPU-4 233 2) Same with ZU-23-2, Czechoslovakia used towed 30mm vz.53 AA twin of local production: http://forum.valka.cz/viewtopic.php/...-53-30mm-PLDvK http://www.pvo.webz.cz/pop53.htm http://www.pvo.webz.cz/fot53.htm Unit: 088, Weapon: 057 To my knowledge, Czechoslovakian ZU-23's are only used in Scenario 138: Consider Yourself a Hero. Hope it helps and sorry for a long post flooded with links http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif EDITed for one misplaced link and unit/weapons number. |

So I assume then that the "2007" start date we put in a couple of years back was a touch optimistic? Perhasps 2010 might be better ? Don |
Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
The 2007 was the goal back then, then it shifted to first serial vehicles in March 2008, then last autumn it seemed the whole deal will get canned, nowadays the talks between Steyr and Czech govt are underway but I don't know the results except govt going in with demand to lower the order, these will end God-knows-when so I'd say 2010 is a good guess, as as far as I gather the manufacture is generally ready and just waiting for the word.

Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Another new vehicle is being tested: IVECO LMV light armoured patrol vehicle, armed with 12.7mm RCWS, intended for special forces to Afghanistan. Probable DOI next year.

Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Hey Marek, I have some questions you might know the answer to. I got a copy of Jane's Armoured Personnel Carriers (1985) yesterday and in it there were pictures of OT-64s with AT-3 missiles. One was supposedly an OT-64C w/ 2 missiles flanking the turret, while the other was a standard non-turreted OT-64 type with two missile launcher rails) and apparently a four missile total capacity (2 ready and 2 stowed). The turreted arrangement was also said to be capable of being fitted to the OT-62. Do you know anything about these or what came of them?
|
Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
IIRC those are Polish variants, not used (or AFAIK tried) here, the only "non-standard" OT-64 variants here were unarmed (or AAMG-only armed) variant for peace missions (because the turret looked soooooo aggressive, y'know) and OT-93 or 93B, armed with a small turret from OT-62 and OT-65 FUG, with 7.62mm MG and in the B variant with T-21 recoilless, but OT-93 was never introduced to our army and just sold to IIRC Paraguay.

Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Yep, I know, I just wanted to announce that it's now (finally) official even by our Army and that (finally) 1/2010 is the definite date. Atleast some of the "future projects" reaches its deployment.
Okay, so just three year's delay... Seems our procurement might be catching on at least? Now we have just wait for the whole NATO to switch to some more powerful primary cartridge before our army introduces 5.56 ;) |
Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Another news: Czech Army purchases RQ-11 Raven mini-UAV (6 of them) for ops in A-stan. The planes (for CZK 20 million, that's roughly USD 1.15 million) are due to arrive before the end of November, this year.

Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
News: Czech Air Force received first of the CASA-295M aircrafts, intended to replace aging An-26. Four aircrafts will be acquired and are expected to be here by March this year.
CzAF is also considering a purchase of four C-130J's, two for flight ops and two for spare parts, however that deal is not signed yet and no telling when it will be (if it will). |
Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Another new thing... This time, a new rifle.
Czechoslovakian army selected a new CZ 805 assault rifle as its modern primary firearm. First of the 8000 order are to be delivered this year despite the weapon is yet to be tested by the army  I know, I know, real time horizon is likely to be at least twice as long. Anyway... The weapon is supposed to come in three calibers: 5.56mm NATO, 6.8mm SPC and 7.62x39. These variants shall be modular. SCAR anyone? Well, even its looks are SCAR-y ;) Anyway, the 5.56mm variant is supposed to be "main line" and to consist of: Carbine (ca. 14" barrel) Compact (9" - 11") DMR/SAW (20") Rate of fire 740 rpm and a domestic 40mm grenade launcher was developped as well. Will supply pics and more in the evening. |
Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Ok... Just the pics, as it seems "more" is still hard to get :)

Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Argh! Where is the "EDIT" button when I need one? (I know where, just rhetorical question) ;)
So... Thanks to Remov here are final barrel lengths for the AR variant: Compact carbine: 305mm (12") Carbine: 360mm (14") SAW/DMR: 460mm (18") Manufacturer's official name is CZ S 805 A1 BREN for the 5.56mm family, did not find yet whether BREN is also acronym or just a rememberance to probably best worldwide known weapon of Czech origin. Oh, and RumINT has it that India is showing interest in the 805. Will keep an eye on it, but nothing concrete would be known for years I guess... And in the end it would end up just as "huge export possibilities for CZ-2000", ie vaporware. EDIT: The vaporware aspect is also one of the reasons I reported both CASA and the new rifle just now, when it is generally a confirmed story, the 805 (or rumors of "new assault rifle") was on-and-off for few years already... |
Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Okay, update about new small arms.
Modular rifle family: Two variants will be fielded as of the next month. CZ 805 BREN A1 (Rifle, 5.56x45mm NATO), 360 mm barrel, 500m eff. range (quoted), 760 RPM. CZ 805 BREN A2 (Carbine, 5.56x45mm), 277mm barrel, 400m range, 760 RPM Both rifles will be primarily issued to troops participating in missions abroad. New GL: CZ 805 G1 (40x46mm), either underbarrel or standalone. 150m range (point target), 350m range (area). New SMG: CZ Skorpion EVO3 A1 (9x19mm), 196mm barrel, 1150 rpm. First customer should be the Palace guards. |
Re: OBAT37 - Czech army OOB updates/suggestions
Nice!
The tripod feature seems a little overdesigned though. |
