Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Nightmare
So I install SE IV Gold onto my new machine. Download the latest seiv patch and guess what.... the damn thing won't install because it cannot find SE IV deluxe. Motherf***er.
|
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
You need to get the gold to deluxe patch. Patches after that one do not include the gold to deluxe update because it makes for a huge download and people who don't need it shouldn't be forced to download that much. It's over 70 megabytes and is located here, among other places.

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Ya I finally figured it all out. What a head ace. Now I am finding that the latest planet image pack is corrupted. Need to figure out how to get those.

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
From which mirror? I just checked the one from SEnet and it is fine.
|
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
I got it from se.net I will redownload it and see if that corrects the problem. Most likely just a bad download.

Nope, keeps telling me that I do not have permission to do what it is I am doing. I took a screen cap.

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Is the write-protect toggle on on the files? It happened to me once after a reinstall.
Otherwise it could be that you need to reboot because windows thinks the installer is still using those files. Or an issue with the windows policy editor not giving you power of the files. You should be unable to move or delete any of the files in that folder if it's the case. |
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Nope... the other packs all installed just fine. I try to unzip even to blank folder or desk top, get the same error.
|
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Is your C drive nearly full? Winrar extracts archives to your temp folder, then moves the files to the destination once it validates that they all extracted correctly from the archive. (Note that this can be disabled somewhere in Winrar's settings.)
|
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
No the drive is not any where near being full. The system is new. The drive has nearly 900 gigs left. It is the only archive that is doing this. odd.

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
What OS is that?
Try installing to c:\games\SE instead of program files. |
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Atrocities: I had EXACTLY that same problem. the only way I fixed it was to uninstall, and then NOT install it to the default folder. (As per SJ's suggestion, I installed it in C: Games) After that, it worked fine.

Yes, terabyte HDDs are upon us, and dropping in price. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
I am sorry, I stuck with XP sp2 for the OS. I am now thinking that perhaps Vista would have been the way to go. Then again, I am sure, given what has previously been discussed in other topics, that I can have a dual install of both XP and Vista when I wish to do so. Thanks guys. While I was never able to get the rar to work, I was able to copy if from my old HP POS which by the way, has a new spiffy Geforce Card, better than the one that had gone bad. Thank you BFG Technologies. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Have you tried installing from the admin user profile.
Easy way to get to it: from the desktop go to the start menu and select log off. then log off when it asks if you want to switch users or log off. At the xp log-on screen, hit ctrl-alt-del twice. type in "administrator" and the password if set -otherwise leave black- and bam! your into the admin user space. |
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
I have administrative privileges on this PC. Did not make a difference. The file simply would not allow itself to be extracted. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
There error occures with "moving" the file - what means that it (most likely) already has been extracted from the rar archive to your temp folder, but cannot copied over to the SE4 folder for some reason.
Maybe there's a file with the same name already which cannot be overwritten because it's either write-protected or in use? |
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Do you use Google Desktop? I had some problems with it while installing new programs, so i normally stop it every time i need to install somethin new...
BTW: Google Desktop can cause errors in SEIV turn processing, so if you want to play SEIV, stop Google Desktop whilçe playing... |
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Uninstalling Google Desktop is probably the best option... such an annoying, useless program.
|
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Unfortunatelly GooGle Desktop became essential in y work, as i have over a gigabyte of doc and xls files that came from around 15 years of activity in law (i´m a lawyer) and freqüently need to find among these files old petitions and worksheets, as the files don´t have any kind of rational organization i can only find what i want with Google Desktop, as the defauld windows search takes too long to check all the files for the strings i need found...

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
After doing a Windows XP reinstall I'm trying to download planet packs and other image mod packs from Spaceempires.net. Most of the files show "page not found" when I try to download them.
Is Spaceempires.net still operating? Where else can image mod packs be obtained? I thought I had copied all that stuff to CD, but I can't find it. |
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Night
Did you try following the "Home" links?

This game is so incredibly addictive. Last night after re-loading stock SEIV I loaded the TDM mod and began a test game as the Rage. In just a few turns I was hooked. I had forgotten just how beautiful those Rage ships are. |

I keep several identities on my PC (OS:Win XP Home) but I prefer to play games as a plain user, not with Admin privileges. At the moment I have transferred SEIV (with a solo game in progress) over the home LAN from my old (creak, groan) Win98SE machine satisfactorily and it's playable *IF* I login as an Admin-level ID. How do I install SEIV (and all the mods I have) keeping the game engine in H:\Program Files\Games|Space Empires but saving my games and notes and other stuff in ...\Document&Settings\UserXXXX\Games|Space Empires ... ?? Can this even be done? I've tried various edits of the PIF unsuccessfully but I suspect that I need a list of files that HAVE to be writable in my User location. Anyway - HAAALP!!! (Please) |

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Nightmare
Last time I did that I was amazed at seeing the game run in its original vanilla mode. EIGHT races?!? And such SMALL maps!
The next headache was figuring what all the mods were that I had loaded to get SEIV the way I wanted it. I finally gave up. Rebooted the old computer, zipped everything, and copied it over. |

Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Nightmare
Thank you.
That's ultimately what I have done but I had regarded it as only a workaround. If there's no definitive body of knowledeg on the topic then that's what I shall have to stick to. |
Re: Installing SE IV on New Machine. What a Nightmare
