Awe Vs Trample
What wins?
Awe is based on morale... So Mammoths would be better than Elephants and berserking units would be better than anything. What other mechanics can come into play here? |
Re: Awe Vs Trample
Ah, you saw my post. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
My understanding, which might be incorrect, is that trampling is not an attack, and thus draws no awe check at all. |
Re: Awe Vs Trample
Well at least you have some astral magic. Hope you researched some counters!

Re: Awe Vs Trample
Defense helps, and so does body ethereal. Size difference matters a lot.
It lets the trampler attack a lot more units, and it increases damage. Luck, mistform, and twist fate work (they usually do) Repel does not seem to work. Armour matters only when the sizes are very close, because trample damage gets very high. The defender's AP do not matter. If you are trying to trample a Virtue, it will be hard. She is likely to gather afflictions but I've had great results with a Virtue with rings of ice and regen. |
Re: Awe Vs Trample
And here my girlfriend has always told me that size doesn't matter.

Re: Awe Vs Trample
Trample damage is 8 + (2 x Size). Not size difference. But you are correct that more size difference means the trampler can trample more units.

And here's an important piece of advice: "You are not supposed to trample them" |
Re: Awe Vs Trample
Awe works very well against tramplers actually which had surprised me. As late age Pangea I kept sending minotaurs against acro elephants. That was until I realized that dryad hoplites stopped elephants dead in their tracks.

I know that this is what the manual says, but I had a horde (40+) of ice elementals try to trample one Jarl, and they barely scratched him although they were trying until the clock ran out. It's possible that he was getting low damage because he was dodging the tramples, but as I said, there was a horde, and I have trouble believing that his defense was his only salvation. |

Re: Awe Vs Trample
Does it make sense to give weapons to units that can trample like Golems with Stymphalian wings? Do they even attack or is better just to give them shields? Thanks
|
Re: Awe Vs Trample
The weapons will be used if they cannot trample the opponent, i.e. when he's the same
size or bigger. So the answer to your question greatly depends on what you are facing. If there is no one big enough to prevent them from trampling, shields and reinvigoration items is what you should use. But in late game, trample is not very good, and I actually consider it a disadvantage on a Supercombatant. |

In my test to see if Cave Drakes could be used to stop elephants, I found out that they can't. They seemed to take just as much trampling damage as normal size 2 humans; had the size difference had an effect, their armor would have protected them from most of the attacks. |
Re: Awe Vs Trample
I am quite certain that it is only the size of the trampler that matters. Size 5 creatures do not take any less damage from trampling then size 2.
As an aside, seeing awed units stopped elephants is very amusing. |
Re: Awe Vs Trample
Well, I guess it is size then. I would love to see it changed, though.
