OT- Best Snack Donut

Tim Horton's blueberry fritter is IMO the most addictive donut going. If you have not tried one and a Tim's is near by go get one.

I had relatives visiting CAN from Ireland and their addicted to the suckers.

Think apple fritter but blueberries and filled like a jelly donut if you do not know what one is.

So one vote for this snack

Re: OT- Best Snack Donut

Tesco,

Your right about the blueberries, but it is the blueberry muffins that are the best.

Is a fritter really a donut? I thought it was something else.

IMHO the boston creme doughnut is their best doughtnut.

I recently heard that the fruit explosion muffin is by far their biggest seller.

Two words: Krispy Kreme!

If there's a Krispy Kreme near you, go stop in when they've got the "Hot Dounghnuts Now" sign lit up. After you get heady from the overpoweringly sweet odor of doughnuts baking and glave being poured over top of 'em, and after you pause for a moment to watch the doughnut-making magic in process, order yourself a couple of Original Glazed doughnuts and some milk (or coffee). They're wonderful anytime, but a little slice of heaven when their still warm, right out of the frier.

I read somewhere that when Krispy Kreme opened a store in New York, people were lined up around the block to get Hot Doughnuts Now!

Man, I wish I bought their stock when they went public....

Re: OT- Best Snack Donut

KK? bleah. I rembember the hype and the lines when they came to the bay area, but when it comes down to it they are just regular dounghnuts that are glazed over with that hard shell sugary glaze stuff, and the ones that would normally be glazed look like they are dipped in resin or something. they just smother the poor things in sugar. the best dounghnuts usually come from small places where, if they are part of a chain, you cant really trust one location from another. its sort of a neighborhood thing, and an acquired feel for hunting the best shop down.

but back to the subject of the thread, which is the 'snack' variety of said consumeable. I tend to define 'snack' is something to casually munch on while doing other things. used in verb form, 'to snack.' for this definition, I have to side with Geo, the small chocolate ones are the best. of course, if you are using the noun form as a filler between meals: 'a snack,' then the rest of the discussion is entirely valid as well.

Re: OT- Best Snack Donut

Timbits make good filler but their not as addictive.

I went to the blueberry muffins to get off the blueberry fritters.
Now I am off the blueberry muffins so as long as someone does not bring any donuts into work I will be fine.

Never had a KK. None in Canada. Though I do hear that the cost of a franchise is 285k U.S. with a turnover rated at 11 months.

Where I live it looks like donut stores are the only new businesses. I live in a city of 140K and their are 5 Tims. 3 Williams , 2 Robbies, 8 Coffee times, 6 Country Styles and about 20 little independent stores. Then throw in the Starbucks, MMMMmuffins and Second Cups. Over kill. I am surprised that Oshawa has not ballooned at a rate of x to the power of x. Ha Ha

Anyways back to the topic...

Good arguement on the little Choc Donuts. Maybe I will have to try them.

Well it maybe a northern thing also.

I work in the US quite often and I have tried many KK donuts. Unfortunately when I eat them I always think about how much better Tim Hortons are.

BTW, Canada is recognized as the Doughnut capital of the world. Canadians eat more doughnuts per capita than any other country.

There are more than 2,000 Tim Hortons in existence. If you scale this up for the US population, it would be like KK having 20,000 doughnut shops. One doughnut every 184 square miles! Just think of it, New York city would have almost 800.

1) Never heard of Tim Horton's. Do Tastykakes (originally available only in Philly area) count as donuts? Speaking of non-donuts, give me a soft pretzel anytime. (Real fresh Philly ones, not those nasty "New York" style ones they serve in every restaurant, mall, airport, and stadium in the country. Is that truly how they make soft pretzels in NYC? Bleah!)

2) Looking at the OT subjects lately, it seems that SEIV players are interested in music, reading, war, drinking, and donuts. When someone wants to know everyone's favorite outfit, you'll know SEIV has made a major breakthrough!

Dress: Jeans and a t-shirt. Preferably one of four that I got free from Compaq, even though I've never bought any computers from them.

But I invented a custom called "dress-up Monday." (I don't need a "dress-down Friday" because I always dress down.) So on Mondays I come in with nice clothes, even a suit and tie sometimes. It's fun to see people doing double-takes, or wondering if I have a job interview.

For programming: VB for interfaces and simple programs. Visual Fortran for serious stuff. VC++ for working with interns. Matlab for data analysis/visualization.

Programming (the real reason for my reply http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif ) : Visual C++ and Visual J, and those are the only Languages i know, well, still have a lot to learn about C++. First i used Textpad for Java, but since i started using Visual J i got hooked on intelliSense. The programming got easier, the price is that i can't use Swing in Visual J http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif , and i'm too lazy to try and figure out why. And once i got used to the little .exe files Visual J makes for me, the platform indepence thingie of Java is also killed http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif

TS, they are, in fact, two different things. In sweet tea, the sugar is mixed into the tea during the brewing process. The sugar is already dissolved in the pitcher of tea in the refrigerator. What I think you are drinking is called (in the southern US) unsweetened tea. Trust me, it makes a world of difference! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

No - it's actually out for Windows now (see blitzbasic.com if you're interested). However, my first computer was a late-1981 TRS-80 Color Computer which came with BASIC built-in - that's where I learned to program. While I was intrigued by the Amiga when it came out (since it was so well-designed), I had to pass due to its lack of software (also a problem with the Color Computer). I finally replaced my beloved 1 MHz 8-bit CoCo in early 1988 with a PC-clone Tandy 1000 EX (a whopping 7 MHz 16-bit - woo-hoo!). Since then, I've stuck with PC machines at home solely because non-mainstream games (like wargames) show up there more often than anywhere else.

As for clothes, I'm generally a jeans & short-sleeved polo shirt kinda guy. Of course, at work I have to wear button-down shirts and dress pants. I also try to wear as little as possible around the house - fortunately for me, so does my girlfriend...

Anyway, to get back to the original topic for this OT thread: growing up, I always went for Dunkin Donuts. When I moved to Northern Virginia a few years ago, I found a little sole-proprietor shop that sold good donuts (and great apple fritters). But they closed. So I went back to Dunkin Donuts for a while; then my girlfriend introduced me to Krispy Kremes (although we have to get them from the grocery store, 'cause there isn't a KK outlet anywhere nearby). I also like the Entenmann's stuff you can get at the grocery...

had them in San Diego, Austin, Dallas, San Francisco, and L.A.

love those things. more often than not, i hear them called 'jallapeno poppers,' and you can get them in the frozen food section of most grocery stores in my area.

there is a restruant chain in Texas called 'Jims' which is a southwestern style 24hr place almost like dennys but less pancakes, more grits. they have these things which are battered, deep fried, jalapeno strips (slice the skin of the pepper into thin strips, batter, fry) and they call them 'texas toothpicks'

those are good too.

of course most mexican or tex-mex restruants have stuffed peppers, which are larger peppers (the type varies) stuffed with sauce, sometimes meat, and / or cheese.

recently a friend of mine has taken to pickling peppers. large quantities of mixed peppers are sliced and thrown into a jar of pickling sauce (with a few cucumber spears) and a boatload of spices. when they come out the pickle spears are mighty tasty, and the peppers are supreme. requires a tall cold-one or two in order to wash down several of the peppers tho.

However, if you got any of these above mentioned things anywhere near a snack donought, you should be shot.

TS, this is how I make sweet tea.

--Add ~1 quart of water and three large (family-size) flow-through tea bags to a small saucepan.
--Heat until it just starts to boil.
--Remove from heat and let stand (steep) ~10-15 minutes.
--In a gallon pitcher, add 1 1/2 cups of sugar (more or less to taste, of course).
--Add the steeped tea to the pitcher. Squeeze out the tea bags for more flavor.
--Stir the sugar/steep mixture in the pitcher till the sugar is dissolved.
--Add cold water to make a gallon, stirring all the way.
--Chill, as it's best served cold.

Now that everyone can make their own sweet tea, I promise this is the Last time I mention sweet tea, unless someone else brings it up.

Grits: I won't even go there!

Yep Sweet tea is the same as Iced tea. I had a feeling all along. So if you come to Canada just ask for iced tea. It is just another type of pop up here unless you brew it your self or by the Iced tea mix from the supermarket. Which is really good. I drink it all the time. It helps with those sore sunday mornings if you did not keep track of what drinks your body can handle on a Sat. night.

Sun tea. I have heard of it but never tried it. I love tea. Russian tea is quite nice. Bitter with a nice hint of sweetness.

Sun tea is made basically the same as sweet/iced tea, except you don't heat the water. You just stick it straight into the pitcher, put the teabags in it, and let it sit (steep) in the sun all day. The rest is the same.

I love 'em, but can't get them where I live, ironically, just north of Pittsburgh by about an hour & 15 minutes(depending on traffic and driver sanity/will to live). Had them all the time in San Diego (hometown) when I lived there, and when I visited earlier this summer. I could probably find them if I drove out about half an hour, but they aren't worth that much http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

I don't know if Arby's all over the country have the poppers, but Arby's is a national chain. You might try checking there locally and see if they have them.
