Meeting engagements problem

Hi

I have noticed that since the version 4 upgrade, in the generated campaign, your missions are now all meeting engagements, where are the assalts, advances etc, I have tried a number of times, and this is all you get, was this planned for version 4, also when you select a helicoter in the core and then delete it you can now still select a sead or strike craft for your core.

Re: Meeting engagements problem

Can you give specific details about the "select a helicoter in the core and then delete it" issue please ? I tried it in a test and nothing like that occured. There may be a specific series of events so we need date, nation etc etc to test this

The meeting engagment issue we are looking into

Go to the generated campaign, select the default armies, buy an attack class helicopter or any other heli, then delete it, you now have an airstrike available, you will see now that you can now buy an aircraft for your core

looks like this only happens when you pick a gunship or attack helicopter

And since you only get offered an attack or other helo formation (as well as air strikes) in the purchase screen if you have >0 air strikes available - the problem is what exactly?. You bought an air formation then deleted that, and so you get your strike point credited back to you.

OK. I see the problem now.

We'll look into this

About the meeting engagements, is this a 100% thing or a hit and miss bug?
I am in the 3rd battle of a long generated campaign and I would like to know if the missions will continue to be meeting engagements no matter what the results.

Re: Meeting engagements problem

There is code there to make the first 3 battles of a PBEM campaign always meeters for a balanced tournament of 3 battles. I had thought the code for a non-PBEM one was always only the one guaranteed meeter for the first battle, so it seems I will need to check that the PBEM code is not overriding the normal code.

If it's overriding the normal generated LC against the AI - then battles after No. 3 should be random (apart from special battles), as normal.

I am sorry, I thought this was a single player problem too.
Well, I am sure you guys will figure it out if there is a problem. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: Meeting engagements problem

I've seen the same thing in a generated campaign, every battle since v4 upgrade is meeting engagement and these are not the first battles of the campaign.

Re: Meeting engagements problem

Meeters are logical - if a campaign starts you have to get to the enemy first http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I've had a full range - river assaults, assaults, defends, advances and delays - in my generated BAOR'86 campaign.

Re: Meeting engagements problem

And I have just advanced my Egyptian 1973 campaign to battle no. 4 - on reloading the savegame several times, battle 4 was then offered as meeter (once), delay (twice), defend (one), advance (once) and special battle (one).

It seems that the first 3 battles of a generated campaign are being limited to meeters, same as for the PBEM campaign. I had intended that only battle one should be a guaranteed meeter if a non-PBEM generated LC, but I can live with 3 initial meeting engagements. Past battle 3, the normal randomness ensues.

Re: Meeting engagements problem

I ran a generated Russian Campaign to the fourth battle and was offered a Delay ( three times ) defend ( once ) , assault ( once ) and a special battle (once).

The first three battles were meeters.

The attack helo problem is a separate issue and will be looked into

Re: Meeting engagements problem

As stated before, the campaign I've been running had produced only meeters since v4 upgrade, but clearly this could just be coincidence so I ran tests in that campaign from the end of battle 21 (yes, it's a long campaign!).

I ran the next battle 25 times, which seems a lot but statistically is a small sample with a margin of error.

Results:

Meeter 8 (24%)
Advance 5 (20%)
Assault 2 (8%)
Delay 1 (4%)
Defend 4 (16%)
Special(advance) 2 (8%)
Special (assault) 2 (8%)
Special (delay) 1 (4%)
Special (defend) 0

Clearly there is not a problem per se with meeters, what I and others saw is just coincidence. Meeter appears to be the most probable outcome so it is not surprising that 3 or 4 battles in a row could be of that type, and it is somewhat less probable that the same could happen with the other types. But running the set-up again will ultimately give a different option, so those who don't like meeters have the option to roll again.

cheers,

Tim

Well, good to know. Unfortunately I will have to wait a bit longer to find out of myself since I accidentaly saved another battle over my campaign...

You could use a backup program to automatically create a copy of the files in the Saved Games folder. There are plenty of free programs about, and they can be scheduled to backup at a fixed time or run manually, i.e. end of every session of play.

I always save every turn of every battle, worse case scenario I might have to go back in time but wouldn't lose the whole campaign.

cheers,

Tim

Re: Meeting engagements problem

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is the first time I overwrite a save game of steel panthers in, what is it now, 12-13 years?

Of course, I am older than 12-13 years ago, but still.

I have re-loaded many times in the generated campaign, after battle 3, you still only get meeting engagements.

And as I noted in post #615131 above I ran a Russian Generated campaign to game four and was offered " a Delay ( three times ) defend ( once ) , assault ( once ) and a special battle (once)." and others have found the same thing so perhaps you could tell me exactly which nation you were playing and which opponents you were playing against and what year etc etc so I can run the same test you are running. Or , better still post this campaign you are having problems with and then everyone can try it ?

Re: Meeting engagements problem

Erm, probably a dumb question, but why can't a campaign begin with an assault or delay?

Sniper23 June 27th, 2008 03:42 PM

Re: Meeting engagements problem

I personally like starting a campaign with a Meeting engagement because it gives you the chance to cross-attach squads and gives you the experience you need for assault\delay.
