Bump in Appreciation of Gandalf Parker

Apparently some bozo has ruined Gandalf Parker's day by sending him nasty email over his server crash. Let's drown out this nattering nabob of negativity with a chorus of appreciation for a guy who's services to our community are so numerous and well known that they need not even be enumerated.
Mr. Parker is a much better wizard than that guy in the book.

Whomever it is they shall be playing only single player games if their name gets out.

what kind of doosh would do something like that?

it's people like Gandalf that make Dom3 a worthwhile game. without people like him putting in the amounts of personal effort and time that it takes to even create the servers that this game and community depend upon, there would be no Dom3.

Well, it wasn't me. I have had a game go down due to Gandalf's hardware problems recently. But I have offered nothing but encouragement. I think he needs money instead of encouragement, but I have little of that.

While it's certainly a nice gesture to start a praising thread, I'm confident that Gandalf Parker has been around long enoguh to know that you can't let a single moron ruin your day http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

This especially goes for said morons with an Internet connection http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/Injured.gif

Still, there's no question that GP's contibution to strategy gaming is highly appreciated. He's very polite, helpful and patient, and the reason I'm now playing Dominions 3 till 2AM several nights every week http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I heartily agree with this. It's people like Gandalf and llamabeast who provide server space who keep the MP community alive and who enable it to run as smoothly as it does. We all owe them a debt of gratitude.

They do not deserve abusive asshats getting in their face about it. Let said asshat first run his own server and then maybe he will have some perspective. But I doubt it.

Note: I discovered Dominions in the first place because Gandalf posted to Usenet about Master of Magic sequels praising Dominions II as a worthy successor. Agree with you, Meglobob.

I miss you, Gandalf Parker.

In fact, you're the one who brought me into Dominion.
I was wandering for informations about the game (Dom2), and I found this forum, and I find your posts ... and you're amazing work.
So, I dive into it, and never come to the surface again.
Since Dom3 came out, I barely only play at it.

Even if I can't apreciate everything that you (and others, as Edi said) have done because I don't play MP, I really respect your time invest & your care of this community.

Shame on everyone who are not enough cleaver or respectfull for all the work done here.

It reminds me the recent story with Edi, and its reaction.
Shame on people who don't know how to keep theirs mouths shut.
I must admit that I have been shocked by this story. I perfectly understand Edi. Maybe it's because I'm not so young now (40 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif) and I have very much trouble to tolerate those who are born with Internet and find it normal that everything is free, must be free (beware, pirates!), and only know about demand, never asking, always pressure people to have what they want fast, now and bigger than before, and of course, for no charge at all, not even a thanks.
I know the story about Internet, and about free software. This is not want you seem to think. This is not dedicate to you only.
For you, I wish you that life remember that you are not the world's center, and if you want something, you must do it yourselves or gently ask for it.

Well, enough rant.

I wish everyone here a very good day, and I respectly thanks everyone here who make my game's time fun, cool, and sometime, because of your hard work, even better.

Thanks all.

Gandalf was more than helpful with helping me get a map set up for the Kingmaker game. He can off dozens of maps for me.

Quite honestly, Edi, Gandalf, Llamabeast, do tremendous work to keep the dominions community operational, and there are many other strong contributors as well.

I am sure it tries the patience to get an email that is not polite, but remember that you get teens the world over playing games(and rude adults too). Most folks are appreciative, so do not let the few who are not get you down.

My first MP game was hosted by Gandalf - the first of quite a few. For which he has my gratitude.

Gandalf has a reputation for being both helpful and approachable and has hosted innumerable games (and helped others set up to be hosts themselves). It just staggers me that someone would slag him off for a problem that popped up whilst he was hosting yet another game.

OK OK OK.
Thanks all. and I will strive to return to the game.

Now go forth and spread this to all of the other free things you've been gobbling up. Your favorite servers, favorite mods, favorite maps, favorite strategy. Anything being shared for free that you wish the person would do more of.

If people dont do them for money then you might find that "paying" regularly with some appreciation will help to keep things going. For that matter, add free patches and free forums to that list.

Sorry for my rant. I sincerely apologize if I have hurt some people. I really do.
Nothing agains youngs ... except beeing younger than me of course http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

It not belongs to age, but to people's state of mind.
I can only say that I see great excesses these days, at least in France, with people who only know free Internet, and who believe that evething must be free and accessible immediatly. No patience, no gratefullness, and too often, no respect for other people. And I see it very often in public forums (hopefully NOT here!).
Same apply in the everyday life in general.
But I believe that my parents said it about us when I was young, and my gran parents about my parents, and so on http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Well, again, I apologize for my rant.
I suggest that this subject will remain private by now.

ROFL
I will have to tell my son that. He and I have been frequent in other peoples conversations about the pros and cons of having a unique name. Gandalf is actually my middle name. My first name is Anthony. I grew up with Tony, then started using my middle name about the time I left home. My son on the other hand is Anthony Elrond Mithrandir Parker. We called him Mith when he was growing up. When he hit his teens he started making everyone call him Anthony.

Believe me, DONT saddle your son with Gandalf. Parker would be problems but not nearly as much as Gandalf. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Gandalf's one of the most dedicated, selfless, considerate, and friendly people that I've met on the internet, let alone the Dominions boards.

While he and I don't seem to see eye to eye on our military philosophy, I regret that we're not close friends-he's one of the few people I've met that has an imagination as big and crazy as mine. I have every respect for him in the world, and he's really gone above and beyond in promoting Dominions 3 and just being all-around helpful.

So in closing, be nice to Gandalf, because I've got his back, and I have no compunction whatsoever about kicking someone when they're down, or for that matter, pushing them down in the first place.

Thanks to all the selfless contributors that have made Dominions MP a blast. From my POV that includes Gandalf, LLamabeast, Pasha, and Edi among others as well as all the vets who have quickly and patiently provided advice and answers to my noob questions over the past ~ year like Micah, Wraithlord, Endo, IH, Xietor, etc.

Makes Dom 3 MP a pretty cool experience and hats off to you all. I'd happily buy you a beer if you ever land in SF.

Cheers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image.../beerglass.gif

To that list I'd like to add Endoperez-who always seems to be everywhere, doing everything, as well as Amos, Sombre, DrPraetorious, Foodstamp, Zepath, Quantum_Mechani (who doesn't get nearly enough credit for CMB), and all the other incredibly talented, hard-working modders out there.

And a little respect for the Devs, because they're a great bunch of Swedes, without which we wouldn't be here.

And ofcourse our moderators-especially for Annette and Mindi, who are beautiful, intelligent, wise and powerful women who battle slimy trolls in the skimpiest of chainmail and make all our lives easier-except for those of us who are trolls. And for the new ones, who we're going to work like mules, and promptly shoot and sell for glue, should they go lame.

I'd also like to add my thanks to the folks that have contributed their time to improving, modding and documenting the game and providing valuable utilities, who have set up fun games and provided badly need hosting and who have answered a lot of my noob questions. For me this includes Gandalf, quantum_mechani (CBM is crucial), lch, llamabeast, Pasha, Edi, Xietor, Foodstamp, Sombre, micah and Zeldor (though I wish he's stop using that silly mirc macro http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif) and also to the people I'm leaving out because I haven't met them yet or found out about the great work they've done. Re: Bump in Appreciation of Gandalf Parker

Gandalf has done a lot for the dominions community. However there is still responsibility in hosting a game server where the games last months, sometimes years and each turn takes hours of time to do. This does *not* excuse rude email harassment; but this is the second host that I've had drop off the face of the earth and not heard anything as to whether the games will be back up or not. It is admittedly very frustrating.

Gandalf - are the save games recoverable? Many of us just want closure - if you can get the server files and send them to us for us to host ourselves we're more than happy. But if nothing is recoverable it would be good to know so we can move on.

Sorry that I have been 'away' for a bit, but I must also credit Gandalf Parker for getting me into and fostering my love of Dominions.

Nice merchandise, on the whole. I think my own favorite saying would be

'You think you are wise, Mithrandir, but for all your subtlety you lack wisdom.'

'Maybe, but guess who's about to eat 50 raiding Satyr armies!'

(The joke's a bit dated, but I hope most people catch it.)

As far as names go, I named my son after a very similar character to Olorin (as my personal favorite name for him). In fact, if you read Socrates Meets Jesus by Peter Kreeft, the identification is explicit at the end.
