SC gear

i am just testing out some SC gear in single player, do I have everything that i need for an effective SC.

SC chasis is a Melqart
Fire Brand
Charcoal Shield
Black Steel Helmet
Robe of Shadows
Earth Boots
Amulet of Resilience
Pendent of Luck
first thing i do in battle is cast Invulnerability and Bless which gives me 10% regeneration.

Re: SC gear

You'll slaughter the AI just fine. And die in a couple rounds in MP.
No MR boosters. I don't know offhand what Melqart's have for MR, but I'll bet it's not over 20. You can't have too much...

(Even in SP, I'd cast Summon Earthpower (for reinvig) and Iron Will for MR)

Re: SC gear

thanks for that, i already have reinvig thanks to my amulet, but i will add iron will to my spell casting list

Re: SC gear

Remove amulet of Reinvig if it is an Earth Melqart and use Amulet of Antimagic (Earthpower gives enough reinvig)
Remove Earth boots and cast Ironskin. If you still need reinvig, use Boots of the Messenger, Flying shoes otherwise.
Change Charcoal Shield to Vine shield.
Maybe add regen.

This is what I'd use:
Fire Brand
Vine shield
Black Steel Helmet / Dragon Helmet / Horror Helmet
Hydra Skin Armor / Rainbow Armor
Boots of the Messenger / Flying Shoes
Pendant of Luck
Amulet of Regeneration / Amulet of Antimagic

Re: SC gear

The Charcoal Shield clears chaff. With the Vine Shield, you'll lose to a timeout if there are enough of them. Horror Helm would suffice except for undead or other unbreakables.

Summon Earth and then Invulnerability.
Skullcap for MR is another alternative.

Regen comes from the bless, though more is always good.

Also, if you're up against a nation with strong mages in a particular path, make sure you've got resistance to it. Fire, Cold, Lightning, poison, higher MR for astral nations, etc.

Re: SC gear

why would I replace charcoal shield with Vine shield? I have seen it win battles on it's own. I have a level 6 nature blessing so I am covered on regen.

Because your sc will be hit MUCH less with it. He will be hit almost never, actually

Re: SC gear

thats why i like Robe of Shadows, Invun combo, i have 27 defense, ethereal, and luck my guys takes so little damage i don't even notice it, except when they get the 'bright' idea to cast blade wind and they die because of how much fatigue they get. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

thejeff June 11th, 2008 02:06 PM

Re: SC gear

If you script just your buffs, then attack they shouldn't cast blade wind.

I've never seen a mage set to attack cast anything.

If something in your script is being overridden, that'll be a problem, but should be fixable.

Re: SC gear

I think I forgot to finish my script which was the problem. I was just very annoyed, watching my SC die because of that, was very annoying.

Re: SC gear

I tried a Vine SHield (after reading all the hype on the forums) on a non trampling SC, and it did absolutely jack, and ..... nothing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Even when I tried it on a trampler, I was categorically unimpressed by the performance. Maybe I did something wrong, had it in the wrong hand, held it too high, moved too fast. Was I supposed to try to clean those green things off of it? I cut them off with my sword, but they regrow so fast.....

thejeff June 11th, 2008 02:37 PM

Re: SC gear

The Vine Shield is really nice on cheaper thugs. Probably less so on High end SCs.

More important for high defense thugs as well.

If you can take the hits, Charcoal Shield will kill the chaff around you. If you can't, Vine Shield will keep you alive long enough to kill them yourself.

Ironhawk June 11th, 2008 03:13 PM

Re: SC gear

Yeah the value of the vine shield, beyond its defense, is that it entangles your attacker. But if you are being attacked by chaff then you dont really want to stall them for a turn you just want to slaughter them in droves.

Re: SC gear

Depends what one's up against.

Invulnerability is slightly dodgy if going up against... poison-happy people, IIRC.

The design in thread doesn't counter cold (Frozen Heart, say) or lightning. Depending on what one's up against, that might not be a problem.

Flight might be useful against death-heavy folks (combo skellispam to block you, drain life or disintegrate to kill you) but at least the sword and shield allow one to hurt multiple opponents per turn.

Meglobob June 11th, 2008 06:52 PM

Re: SC gear

Try vine shield with high protection and watch them all get entangled.

Robe of shadows is a bit rubbish, especially vs other players, as it just gives ethereal and most of what you end up fighting has magic weapons or some form of magical attack. So the ethereal effect is useless.

Re: SC gear

Perhaps this is just an SP question? Dunno, but in MP, replace the shield with an Eye Shield. An eye shield makes enemies quake before you. My SCs with an Eye Shield have rarely been attacked.

I wouldn't rely too much on that. In the LeafNosedBat MP game my capital PD (EA Ulm, PD 25) hacked a Wraith Lord with an Eye Shield to death in less than three rounds of actual fighting, though it was suboptimally equipped. The eye shield is good, but it is no guarantee against anything. It might deter other SCs somewhat, but the right kind of chaff can sneak up on you if you're not set to deal with them as well.
