semi blitz
hi, i would like to start a west coast game with the understanding that it would move along with a rapid pace. it would be along the lines of only people from the west coast of america can play. so we are in the same time zone. i won't be hosting because i just don't know how to and my computer skills are sadly lacking. i don't care what age or anything other than simulating sp in speed. i would not care if someone more talented than me hands me my face. i just want to fight a good fight. quickly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Bwaha http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: semi blitz
[I had the thought of a 6-8 player game, only running during a specific time slot. Not sure if it's what you had in mind, but like a 4 hour run once a week, set to 15m autohost. That would be a minimum of 16 turns per session, with probably a few more than that on the opening night. Most games would probably take 2 weeks, some might take 3.
I don't know about hosting though, that's why I never broached the subject, but here you are in PST suggesting something similar, so I thought I might chime in. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif] @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @@@@@@ Tentative game details- July 6th, saturday, run time 1pm-5pm PST 15m quickhost during the opening session 30h quickhost after, with another 4h session the next weekend *maybe* Magic Sites: 60 Other settings: Default Map: Dependant on signups Mods: Worthy Heroes 1.8 Age: Middle Lingchih: Ermor JimMorrison: Bandar Log *** When signing up, please vote as to whether you want the NO RUSH (no attacks for the first 4 hours) scenario, or FULL CONTACT (attack any time, but 15m quickhost so little time for diplomacy or scripting) during the first session. *** |
Re: semi blitz
yeah, thats the kinda thought i like. lets explore this. someone that is more capable than me will have to host this project. like i said i just want to play. i will play any game that runs in this fashion. i'll play any veteran or newbie like myself in such a game. to any other players- please chime in. i'm partial to the on-line games. its just so much simpler than the email system. you type your password in and go. swapping files around is fine for those who are up to it, but not me. at least not yet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif Bwaha
|
Re: semi blitz
Well for longer games with 24h turns or whatever, I'm much preferring Llamaserver to other options. I just really like the system of confirmations and notices, you get all the info you need to insure it's all running smoothly. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
But doing a mid sized blitz style with 15m turns, email would be ridiculous. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif I also want something faster paced at times, I think this could be a good thing. At least, if we had more than 2 players for it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif |
Re: semi blitz
i think we can find players that would love to play in this fashion. i will try to seek them out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif Bwaha

Re: semi blitz
I'd do something like this right now.
I don't think you can just do a fast game though; probably more of a fast-start, with 12 turns done in two days. after that it gets hard to hold people to the kind of scheduling necessary, plus you need more time to do turns and conduct diplomacy. |
Re: semi blitz
I am definitely up for a semi-blitz game now. I think we should try to start it off with a real blitz session to try to get the first 20-30 turns done in one day/evening. I think that's realistic if people are ready for this kind of game.
|
Re: semi blitz
we'd need to let llama know we're interested in starting a game, agree on settings ect.
looks like we've already got 4 ppl ready though, only need about 4 more. we'd also need to settle on a time to do the first 20ish turns; some time everyone has available. All involved can get on IRC and we do diplo and all else over it on the fly. how bout we agree on settings, then start a thread and get it rolling. I'd actually like to do MA I just started an MA game, but I got rushed and about to get knocked out before first year is up; want another chance to play Shinuyama. If not MA second preference is EA I'm not fussed on any other settings. I'd vote yes on CBM though, if there was support for it. |
Re: semi blitz
Seriously, 12 turns over 2 days sounds like..... More trouble than it's worth. Unless you think you have a realistic shot at sieging someone's capital in that time, you should be able to push out 12 turns in an hour. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
It's giving me an idea for a "non-rush-semi-blitz" game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif The basic idea is to get as many turns as possible in on the first evening - with direct attacks on other players prohibited for that first session. So once initial expansion is done, everyone gets some time to finalize fort building, focus their research, and plan out their army composition for really bloody mid game wars. Since massing mages would be a little easier, put the research on Hard, but increase site frequency to 60 or so, to help compensate for the lack of trading in the early game (due to the pace). Not sure how many people would be up for this sort of a scenario. I'm looking at it not as an artificial peace, but more like the first session defines what would actually be starting empires. So you're doing something of a SP building of your nation, and then the first daily turn after that is really the actual first turn of another game altogether. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: semi blitz
What I was thinking about is a game (day or night) example: sunday 10 am to 8pm. where the players gather around and have at each other. mini marathons. spaced so they could have a life. no one wants to commit to many marathons. (at least i don't) My buddys have a game night where once a week people show up and game the night away. but this thread is going the way i wanted so keep it coming. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif Bwaha

Re: semi blitz
A 10 hour stint? :O Have you played any MMOs by any chance? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif That's what we ended up doing in WoW..... it's fun now and again, but painful as well. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I definitely believe in the "gaming night" concept, with a session of 3-4 hours perhaps. But I wouldn't feel comfortable committing to, or asking others to commit to anything longer than a 4 hour stretch. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif The unfortunate part being that the Dom3 community seems to be mostly made of people with families, and other obligations, so the PBEM standard works great for them. Not sure if we can get 8 people locked into a 3-4 hour time slot, but I'd love to see it happen! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif |
Re: semi blitz
Okay, I just was just testing the waters. 3 to 4 hour game sets is fine by me. what ever is resonable to a crew of gamers. just hard core as far as my style. its the timing thats the problem. how i would start a game is to arrange a time that we can set beforehand. as you say this has to worked out with family, ect. for example; i available 10am to 8pm on sundays. (west coast) some breaks for food and other stuff ect. if we can compile a time and day for people to play it would rock. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Bwaha
|
Re: semi blitz
Well if it's 4 hours, we shouldn't need much in the way of "breaks" really. Maybe once an hour take 5 for biological functions? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Obviously most people would want it to occur away from dinnertime specifically, so the most logical time slots available would either be something like 12-4pm, or 7-11pm. I'm sure people can volunteer others, but just figuring something along those lines would accommodate most people with typical patterns. I wouldn't mind something that ended up running through normal dinner hours, I'm just anticipating other people objecting to it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: semi blitz
West coaster here. I'd be up for an occasional "semi-blitz" I'd guess Sun nights might be best as they are normally pretty dead otherwise.

Re: semi blitz
there's a bite, yeah keep it coming. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Bwaha

Re: semi blitz
Ahh. I am in Dallas, Tx, But only two hours off from west coast time. I might be tempted. I have definitely played my share of 4 hour games.
|
Re: semi blitz
Just name your potential time slots folks, we'll find the time that works best for the most people. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
|
Re: semi blitz
I would love to partake but could only play two turns a day right now, since I'm on the road. I could play faster if we waited until ~15th July to play (I will be home then).
I will bookmark this thread. |

I am near west coast and I am interested
|
Re: semi blitz
potential times for me, in PST:
PLAY 9am - 1pm WORK 2pm - 9pm PLAY 10pm - 2am the PLAY part I have available basically everyday. many days I could possibly fit in during the WORK time, because its a very part time job (simple summer job) and I have quite a few days off. |
Re: semi blitz
Is that your sunday schedule, Omni?
|
Re: semi blitz
that's my everyday schedule. some days i'm off, others i'm not. the PLAY time is dependably available, the WORK time is sometimes available, but to be able to count on that time requires advanced notice. If we are going to plan on doing this on sundays, then I can get sundays off, maybe.
it turns out I am off all day this sunday, and would love to start this thing then. |
Re: semi blitz
Since you are off this coming Sunday, the 2pm-9pm slot would be good for me. That would be 12pm-7pm for me (although I think we agreed to only go four hours). I think I could fit that in.
I would want an initial blitz game of four hours, with communications done on IRC, then 24 hour turns after that. If you guys are up for that, I will join. If we are doing MA, I would like Ermor. |
Re: semi blitz
I'd prefer the later part of that slot, like 5pm to 9pm. Lingchih, I think you are two hours later though right?
|
Re: semi blitz
Please continue, this is shaping up rather nicely. I wont be playing this time. Big project coming up, so i will just stay in the games that I'm playing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif Bwaha

Re: semi blitz
well its a tricky move for me to explain to the wife why i need to hang around indoors playing a PC game for 4 hours, and its even tougher on a sunny weekend afternoon so I will only be able to play if its later in the evening. no worries though - seems as there are enough folks anyway.
|
Re: semi blitz
Almost comical. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
Omni: I can play anytime but the middle of the day. Lingchih: I can play anytime during the middle of the day. Let's look at THIS sunday specifically. So Omni, if you don't work on this sunday, speak up, so we know if you're good for a more mid-day slot this week. What I am thinking, is that it would be nice to revisit with another intense playing session, but that we will only plan on 4 hours this sunday, and then something like a 30h quickhost afterwards. If we all can get together the next week to finish it up, that would be great, otherwise we'll still get straight to the meat of the game in one day. I haven't had IRC for some time, but I don't remember it being hard to use at all, IRC WILL be required for participation in this game. Not only so that turn hosting can be done as fast as absolutely possible, but also so that you can actually have some kind of diplomacy with turns going by at a few minutes apiece. I may be willing to host this match if no one else wants to jump on it. It's very rare for me to take my comp offline, so should be no problems there. And I'm not sure I want to use Llama for this, as it seems to me that PBEM would be cumbersome for the type of game we're looking at, I would like to be directly connected. And yeah, Ling, I think you converted backwards. If you're in Texas, then you're 2 hours later, not 2 hours earlier. So you're 12-7 is actually 10-5 here. I'd tentatively shoot for 1pm-5pm PST then - please post to confirm your reservation for the July 6th game. If we don't get at least 6 signups, I'm going to blame the holiday, and we'll take the extra week to try again on the 13th. Hope this all sounds good to everyone! !!! Details are now listed in the second post of the thread. Signup with nation choice if you can make this time slot and would like to play. Don't forget to vote whether you want the NO RUSH variant, or want FULL CONTACT for the first session. Remember we will postpone a week if there are not enough signups. !!! |
Re: semi blitz

Looks like we are not going to get the signups we need. That's fine, next week works even better for my, since, like DonCorazon said, I really should be outside having some fun on the 4th of July weekend. Of course, outside this time of year in North Texas is like trying to have fun in a blast oven. |
Re: semi blitz
Did you want something different than the blitz server?
http://game.dom3minions.com/bin/blitz_chk.cgi I can open more if you need it. |
Re: semi blitz
Yes, I think your blitz server would be perfect for this. Just don't want to overload it, since it's hosting two more large games now.
Thanks |
Re: semi blitz
Quote:
But beyond the basic game structure, your blitz server is operating as PBEM, or direct hosting? I sort of wanted to avoid the PBEM setup, as I just thought it might overly complicate things with that many players involved. Note to everyone else - if I do host this game, I have no fancy automatic notifications or anything - and I won't be making my own. So if you're not okay with that, then I'd like to hear about it rather than people being surprised. |

Re: semi blitz
It will host big games too. In fact, Fallacy and Figment are running on it now, since Velusion's server that was hosting them died.
It is a network server, and not PBEM. I have used it for blitz games in the past, and it worked well. Gandalf might have to reconfigure a slot for this one, but that is no big deal. Until we get more than 3 people though, the point is moot! |
Re: semi blitz
Hah! It's all relative. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I think this is going to happen, probably next weekend, so I don't want to deal with all of it at the last minute. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Especially if it involves asking Gandalf to take any time to get it working right for us.
Is there the ability to change the hosting schedule and whatnot without having to track down Gandalf? Would be kind of funny if we played 4 hours of turns with 15m quickhost, and then couldn't switch it to daily at that point, and 30 or more turns passed with everyone stale. >.> |
Re: semi blitz
You control the admin, not Gandalf. At least you should control it, since you are the main poster to this thread.
I'm not sure how you do it, with Gandalf's server, since I have never administered a game. But I am sure it is pretty easy. Just send him a PM with a request for instructions. |
Re: semi blitz
I'll take Arco.
I vote for normal rules allowing instant rushing. |
Re: semi blitz
Shinuyama!
full contact is fine with me. There's no reason why we HAVE to put the server on 15m quickhost. Leaving it on 24hrs is fine because it will process as soon as we all send in turns. EDIT: and just to confirm. the blitz portion of the game is this sunday only? I can do that, but may not be able to the following sunday. |

We may still need a couple more people to make a proper game of it, so it may not be until next week that we try one of these. I did want the fast turn timer on though, to encourage a sense of urgency. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif No staring at your neighbors for 10 mins on turn 2, debating between attacking the 30 Heavy Inf, or the 50 Deer Tribe. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif |

well if we don't get it going tomorrow, there's no guarantees I can make it next sunday; but I can try.

Re: semi blitz
it doesn't feel like we'll start sunday. the forums being down means we havn't been able to pick up any new players or even make plans for the ones that are here.
given the up-in-the-airness of this game right now, I'd prefer not to start tomorrow. The lack of planning makes starting difficult, and I don't want to sit around on my day off waiting for a game that might not materialize. not to hate on the forums, but god damn they chose a bad time. I can look at getting next sunday off, and we can plan for then. I could perhaps be available tomorrow, but only if the game materializes early. like I said, not gonna wait around to see if a game we havn't had the weekend to plan for takes off at all. |
Re: semi blitz
Well, they chose the time when they thought the most players would be offline to update the forums (US Independance Day). I actually commend them for that. They worked through their holiday to do work on the forums.
If you guys want to do this next weekend, I can probably be available either Saturday or Sunday nights. No need for afternoon time. I am totally unavailable during the work week though. |
Re: semi blitz
great news, folks. i'm off again this sunday. i'm still in for Shinuyama then. lets try and get this thing going for next week.
maybe let's take inventory of who we have right now, what settings we are going to use, and start an "official" game thread. if we are using llamaserver, I'd suggest game name "Rhea", after the fastest (I believe) S. American land animal; since this game is supposed to be a fast start style. |
Re: semi blitz
this thread and the idear of the semi- blitz seems to have gone the way of the dodo. no one's posted or tried to continue organizing.
funny thing, this isn't the first such thread to try and organize this type of game, and they all fail in the end. I'm still up for it, but am overall ambiguous. I just got a research assistant position and am eager to do well and garner more work from this person. I could still have time for this game, but won't cry over it if no one else is willing to jump in. Given my apathy, I'm not willing to take point on organizing though. But if someone else wants to, I'll be a player. |
Re: semi blitz
i gave up when the idea of doing it in the evening got bounced. as much as i enjoy the game, i doubt i will spend prime blocks of weekend afternoon time on it.
|
Re: semi blitz
yah good point.
well, with my new job, i work for a person I never see who sends me data with crude instructions of what they want done to it. I then attempt to decode their instructions into mathematically doable statistical analysis and fit their data to models. I send them the models and results back by email. I also consult at a stat lab at the university, so have 24/7 access to the software and equipment. I can do the work anytime, and with VPN client technology, can sometimes do it anywhere too. so basically I was able to quit my old stupid job waiting tables. I have a completely flexible schedule. But now with the options of being able to spend weekday afternoons doing things other than waiting on *******s, maybe I will want to go outside... I could even have a social life at a time block other than midnight to four A.M. |

Re: semi blitz
Alright, (rolling up sleeves) I will find out how to set up a game saturday, and have one ready by sunday. (I hope) Wish me luck. The map will be "world of warhammer" and since the locations are fixed for each race there will a fixed choice on races. I want everything to be fair and balanced. Any help would really rock because my skills with a computer really suck. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Bwaha
