Cold War 2020 Mod R.C.0.6 is out!
 
Hello everyone!

As discussed quite exactly a month ago, here comes the new installment of the Cold War 2020 Mod for WinSPMBT v4.0!

To those who don't know the mod yet, here is the idea: the USSR has not gone bust, the East-West standoff has continued uninterrupted from 1990 all the way to 2020.
Nothing too original, but this means three decades of unfettered force consolidation and military development, FMS and shifting alliances.
Now think about it in wargame terms...

There come Comanches, T-95s, Marder-II, Block-III MBT, and a lot more! No force reduction, no oldies kept in service for decades without replacement, no Shinseki doctrine (well, not too much), now you can have fun wreaking havoc in germany with the best technology that will never be available!

The mod installer contains:

1. 20 historically modded OOBs: Russia (USSR), USA, West Germany, East Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Libya, Algeria, Chad, Mujahedeen and Japan.
2. 160 new IA picklists
3. 832 new icons
4. 1369 new B&W .lbm pictures
5. 52 presentation-screen color .lbm pictures
6. 356 encyclopedia text files
7. 7 stand-alone scenarios
8. 1 complete campaign


To play, just install a new, clean version of WinSPMBT v4.0 (that's to prevent wrecking your custom files or your PBEM games), and run the mod installer over it.

Very nice work Plasma! Impressive icon work.

Btw, I found one bug:OT-2000 Rys in Czech oob don't show in game (you can shoot it but there's no icon for it). Could you fix it?

edit:Another bug:W-3U Sokol and some plane (Bournak if I didn't remember wrong) don't have icons in game...

One question, on what seems to be an excellent piece of work. Does this effect the Canada OOB? I have an MBT loaded just for kind of thing, just wanted to know if I should protect my Canadian OOB.

Nope, not yet. The list of affected OOBs was posted pretty much everywhere on this thread, on the mod page, the readme... Canada I haven't got around to do yet, but probably soon. There are no icons, lbms, picklists or other changes that should affect the Canadian OOB, and the .obf file itself is not overwritten.

In any case, I once again advise everyone to install the mod over a new copy of WinSPMBT rather than over the one you usually play and edit, to avoid PBEM conflicts and losing custom files.
If you want to install the Cold War mod on a fresh game folder and then copy your custom Canadian OOB into it, I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Please tell me if it doesn't, and how.

I don't know how this can happen, since neither the Rys or the W-3 use custom icons, and these icons are not in modified files.
I guess this if unit #725 "OT-2002 Rys" in OOB 37? I have no other entry for the Rys in Czechoslovakia.
Please check that the files icon0100.shp and icon0101.shp in folder WinSPMBT\Game Data\Graphics exist with modification dates of 25/03/2008 and 12/05/2006 respectively. They contain the official icons used by these units.
Did you try these units in the official game as well? That would be unit #439 "Rys Azalia AOP", #459 "Rys M-98" and #572 "KTO Rys" in OOB 02 Poland, and all the Sokols you can find.

Could you give me more detail about the other graphic bugs you have encountered? OOB and unit number would be fine.

Regarding the L-201 aircraft icons, these are custom icons which I recently moved, so there may be some bugs left here and there.
I will issue a correction shortly if some more of these problems are found. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Still no idea about the other bugs with the original icons, though.

Hmm 1st bug was in generated campaign game.
Btw, I just noticed that both icons 0100 and 0101 don't exist in my graphics folder... I just reinstalled 0.6 version. What I did wrong? Did you forgot to add them into installer? If so, could you attach them here?

Seems everything has worked as advertised, it didn't effect my Canada OOB. Just to clarify, is there supposed to be a Comache or a Abrams follow on? Not a problem otherwise, seems to play fine so far.

Huh, as said earlier, these two files are official and should be part of your original WinSPMBT v4.0. As such, they are not supposed to be in the CWM installer in the first place.
First, did you install the mod over an V4.0 WinSPMBT game? Using any earlier version is bound to cause problems, e.g. missing icons.
If you did, then there is a problem with the game install you used. I would recommend extracting to a new folder the required WinSPMBT patches, and copying the graphics files from there to your Cold War Mod install.
Use Upgrade v4.0 for file icon0100.shp, and
Supplement v3.0 for file icon0101.shp.
The files needed can be found in the usual Game Data\Graphics\ folder.

If other such problems come up, the radical solution would be to install a fresh WinSPMBT with all patches, and then only install the Cold War mod on it. If you keep a copy of your campaign savegames, there should be no problem to start it again when this is done.

Great, nice to know everything works as planned!
Abrams follow-on is pretty clearly included in the US OOB in the shape of the old Block-3 tank and family. That's the non-export version, export-proof successor coming soon.
Comanche follow-on would be rather out of scope in terms of game timeline and technology IMHO, and the late Apaches and Comanches are already fearsome enough to hold the line until 2020.

Thanks for all your work here. I have never downloaded your Cold War Mods so I have a question. I was looking at the E German (Ukraine) OOB and it looks like it is the same as the Official Ukranian OOB with a different flag. Has there been work on the OOB or did I screw something up? I have a separate install for your mod.

Ok as I suspected I loaded things up wrong I forgot to copy your OOB's into the OOB file. {cbreedon this may be your problem the CW OOB file is a separate folder placed into the OOB folder. This must be done by the user. As well the DDR OOB is in the Ukrainian slot the name change required to an exe change not possible.)

Anyway now everything is right in the future universe, I'm impressed with the work done here. BTW no problem again with my Canada OOB. If you’d like I’ll line it up with your AH vision and send you a copy.

FYI I've found a couple small errors thus far:

#1- US OOB one of the FB-22 Raptors has in it's #1 wpns slot a cannon listed as a GBU-35 JDAM. I beleive you meant for a cannon to be there.

#2- POLAND OOB the Hibernyt SPAA looks to be meant to be Truck/AAA unit, however the icon is a Lt Tank.

If I find anything else I'll let you know.

As explained by PanzerBob (and in the readme and the install notes, incidentally), the modded OOBs are installed into a dedicated "Custom OOBs" folder called "ColdWar2020_v0.6". Once the mod is installed, you still have to use the "Custom OOB Sets Manager" to load the OOBs.
This is meant to prevent overwriting other preexistent custom OOBs that may be in the default OOB folder.

I hope this helps and that you enjoy the content! (and the differences with the regular Ukraine OOB, of course)

Nope, the FB-22 doesn't carry a cannon, not anymore than e.g. the F-111 did. Long-range strike and high-altitude bombings are of the essence here, not strafing or air combat.
Looks like I left over the AP ammo=1 for the gun tube though, but that's just an omission that has no incidence on gameplay.

Well, I had not spotted this one before release, due to my bad habit of searching units by name. Turns out a plain old AA truck gets a 2S31 paint job...

I've realigned my Canada OOB to refelect what could have happened if the government hadn't hung us out to dry in the later part of the 20th Century and had the Cold War digressed into setting Europe alight. I want to play test it first for a few turns before I send out.

I real like the idea of the 90mm Gun you have on the Lowe. Hope it functions well in combat.

Can't wait to see this! I have some quite clear ideas for the Canadian OOB, let's see what you come up with.
My original idea for the mod didn't include Europe 'alight' in a major fashion as part of the timeline (it's called Cold War after all), but I have several scenarios for several non-canon flashpoints at different places.

Heh, that's top-notch technology if ever there was (would be?). In SP these low-caliber high-velocity guns (see also Soviet T-12 and Japanese Type-2013) penetrate pretty much anything but sometimes lack the warhead size to deal significant after-armor damage on modern opponents.

The ASG-99 (and family) is a license-produced 5.45mm conversion of the Steyr AUG-A3, as the pics show. Obviously not with the Picatinny rails, maybe a local equivalent.
No real-life basis for this one, I just liked the idea. If you look into the other OOBs, you will see some more cross-breeding between the former Warsaw Pact countries and the less-aligned neighbors.

Well, same here, the icons for the XA-360 are in icon0102.shp, which is included in WinSPMBT official update v3.0.

For reference, you can test with the official OOB 02 Poland, units #207, #208, #672, #673, #680, #681 and #835, which use exactly the same units.

Hello Plasma, I downloaded the latest version of the mod a couple of days ago and, from what I have seen of it, it is great. You certainly have been busy with it. So many new countries with so many new units.

I have a couple of questions though. I am at work at the moment so I don't have access to .SHP files etc but I would like to ask you some questions regarding some of the units later on.

Firstly, regarding Icon0104.shp (14 - 22), what are they?

Same file but now 26 and 27, what weapons system is that mounted on that Leopard?

Also, 56-61, what calibre gun is that? Why the different turret? Is it more of an Armoured Car version? - Good idea making the mortars mobile, by the by.

Icon0105.shp (88-99), what kind of tank is that?

On top of it, you're just going to blow all the surprises I have for the next version!

This one is the Brit version of the Löwe, unused for now. Roughly equivalent to the Löwe-1A2. The next one with the small turret is the Löwe IFV. I haven't integrated this one yet because I can't find a main weapon for it.

ADATS, same turret as on the Bradley. I think it isn't in use yet, planned for Canada and Switzerland.

Turret is Cockerill CT-CV turret with CV105 gun, this one is in service in Belgium as replacement for the Scorpion. Real stuff, by the way, check on their website. But not really in service, that's just me.

GDLS M-4 Terminator, 2010s US export tank, lighter and cheaper than the Block-3 mammoth and suited for second-line export and FMS. Coming soon in Egypt and (probably) Greece and Canada.

Nah, Longbow, Longhorn, who cares...
Personally I'm a fan of unit #654, i.e. the motor rifle section with 85 Javelins, including 80 with HE warhead. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Typos happen.

Thanks for the detailed error report. I knew there were some loose icons in Obat02 (Poland). The relevant ones can be corrected as follow:

Regarding distorted icons in MOBhack, as far as I have seen for now, they cause no problem in he game. I don't know what causes this bug in the first place.

All the errors will be corrected in the next issue.

I have a general modding question. Do the modified SHP files in your mod overwrite any graphics or are you just adding more vehicles. I understand the E German flag overwrites the one from Ukraine, but is there anything else?

There are three flag overwrites for the game menu interface (Battle.shp), the victory hexes (icon0095.shp) and the unit ID tags (icon0095.shp).
Apart from that, I overwrote a few official unit icons in R.C.0.6. Shortly, these are a few of the duplicated WZ501/BMP-1 icons in icon0099.shp and some BRDM-2s to continue the new SA-9 icons that was officially included in V4.0. All this is detailed in the icon list file I posted.

As I said last time, I have no idea where your problem comes from because the units you mention use official WinSPMBT3.0 icons and not modded ones.
That's assuming you are still talking about "SPW-360/57 and SPW-360K". In this case the units involved would be #832, 833, 845, 846, 858 and 859 of OOB 079. Could you please confirm these unit numbers, so we both know what we are talking about?

If we are talking about the same thing indeed, then these units should use icons 3542 to 3544 and 3549 to 3551.
In case these icon numbers still don't show anything in MOBhack, please check in the official OOB 002 (Poland) in folder "OOBs\Default OOBs", units #207, #208, #672, #673, #680, #681 and #835, which use exactly the same icons. This is what I asked you last time and as long as I don't know the result of this check I can't tell you where the problem comes from.

If none of these units show any icon in MOBhack and in the game, then you should probably add into your Game Data\Graphics folder a new copy of file icon0102.shp extracted from a WinSPMBT v3.0 patch install.

Hope this solves your problem this time.

Yes, I mean those 2 models. Check Ukraine/DDR oob and SPW rifle company (and other units which have any of those SPW's)... And I repeat that I have your mod (latest version) and latest WinSPMBT version 4.0 installed.

Or is this meant only for version 3.0??? If so, any sense to use that?

Look, I have just tested a fresh install on my side and all these units work perfectly well in the encyclopedia and buy screens, under all climates.

I have given you a way forward to check where the problem was coming from on your side, now what are the results? Do you see the Rosomak units in the official Poland OOB? Does the \Game Data\Graphics\ folder of your WinSPMBT install contain a file named icon0102.shp?
You and I need this information to pinpoint the origin of this problem, so please stop beating around the bush and please try to apply the solutions I have given you in post #21.
If it appears you have a hole in your game install, then I gave you all you need to solve that particular problem, and otherwise, I would appreciate knowing where the problem can come from.
