Not quite in working order, but very nearly playable. I just need to attach the sprites to the appropriate units, and do enough playtesting to ensure that things actually work. After that...I'll be working on the rest of the sprites.
The many, many sprites. The attached files contain (what should be, more or less) working, but incomplete and unbalanced, name information, units, sites, Pretenders, Nation info, etc. It's roughly 85% done, including the vast majority of the drudgework. The sprites are only about 15% done, but I will probably just shoehorn in some placeholders there. If I don't manage to complete this Nation (and really, there's no good excuse at this point), then atleast it's done enough for someone else to finish in a weekend or two. I've got a handful of surprises planned, but nothing too obscure, or vital. I based the layout of the DM text directly on Zepath's Kharam Dzu, so it should be fairly straightforward to read and understand. Early nation based on the semi-historical Cimmerians, Dacians, Kurgans, Thracians, Romanians, and Illyrians, and early Greek accounts of Hyperboreans, with mild influences from the Celts, and UFOist accounts of "Ancient Astronauts", with a lot to offer fans of Robert E Howard's 'Conan the Barbarian' and 'Kull of Atlantis', as well as the works of Clark Ashton Smith (who's works I eventually plan to base atleast one Nation on, with the permission of Nerfix, who's idea it was). Note: I felt that the physical inclusion of Conan the Barbarian (thief, gladiator, pirate, general, king, etc.), as a unit, would inevitably have become an unintended parody, and/or quickly stepped on by an elephant or something, and I didn't want that to happen. Instead, I decided to make the focus on the less well known, but still quite interesting, King Kull of Atlantis--who managed to become even more interesting, and hopefully fun to play with, through the filter of Dominions, and the portayal of Atlantis in the game. Traits: Barbarian nation led by powerful mages, features: decent magical diversity, a horde of national summons, national spells, full heroes, 3 diverse sacred units, 6 Pretender chassis. Nicely done-thanks! I'll reserve this space for graphics too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Didn't I post here?

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Fog and Darkness
Yeah, but I got a moderator to remove it because it was OT.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Fog and Darkness
you know, if you are doing Cimmeria, you might want to do a late age version of Stygia as well. A human-centered splinter of C'tis, or somesuch...
... then again, that might make then might end up being too much like Late Age Pythium... nevermind http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif |
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Fog and Darkness
which nasty mod did that???
|
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Fog and Darkness
Cimmeria will probably end up with a Pythium hero.
|
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Fog and Darkness
Serpent King? (Thulsa Doom!!) :bg:
|
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Fog and Darkness
That's what I was thinking, something along those lines.
|
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Fog and Darkness
Ok, stats are up, all that's left is possibly a few more heroes, and descriptions. The unit names etc. are taken from the actual Kurgan, Thracian and Dacian/Romanian languages, and have (more or less) real meaning, except for a few that come directly from Robert E Howard, etc.

I cannot find the attachment to download this. It may be because I am old and slow, but I do not see it.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Just a quick bump due to this thread having itself gotten lost in darkness and fog.

Sorry, I think the moderator that did it got you too...I specified that your post ought to remain, but apparently the moderator misunderstood.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Thank you for the response.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
You're welcome! And if I ever do get the whole nation up and running as a downloadable DM file with graphics, I'll try to remember to PM you. As it is, there's a whole lot of balancing needed to get even the stats into shape-apparently protection of even 10 is pretty rare in EA. I didn't remember that being the case, but I'll have to look into it.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Edratman's post has been restored, the others were moved to the moderator forum. Hope that helps.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
It was a matter of principle for me. I have read the post about the forum changes on the Shrapnel page and it covered extensively the concept of editting.
Two days later a pure vanilla post by me is dropped. Nor I am sure if the removal of Aezael's post is also within the spirit of the Shrapnel announcement. |
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Please have the courtesy not to clutter this thread up with an OT argument that's already over with.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Well... over... if one would ask my opinion...

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Move it to another thread if you want to argue about it, please.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Lots of rebalancing, particularly of Prot.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
hmmm looks nice, but if a dire warg is like wargs I know.. wolve-like 4 legged, then his AP should be higher than those of the human/barbs you are using.. 4 legged wolves are usually faster.
Lots of content here, maybe you should look into my dom 300 nations too.. to see what can be added to them.. the nations are sort of well they are nations but can use more spell idea's hero's etc. Seems like just the thing for you since you are about thinking of things. The sprites could usually just be copies of regular troops of that army just modified (as placeholders or semi-permanent (unless you think of REALLY different stuff which needs new sprites) |
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Quick bump because I may work on this some more, soon.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Thanks! That's excellent, and although I probably won't use much of it for Cimmeria itself (The weapon names are particularly useful to me, however). I may use quite a lot of it for a possible Middle Era Nation based on Thrace-Dacia/Gete, that would then be the ME for Cimmeria. I've especially wanted to feature the Rhomphaia in Dom3, and this looks like an excellent opportunity.
Cimmeria-for better or worse-is atleast 50% pulp fantasy. I've shoehorned in some historical elements and speculation, but it's at it's heart a tribute to Robert E Howard, and I'm going to stick to that for the EA. But for the MA, I'd love to carry the history through, especially of Thrace, which has always fascinated me. |
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Just for the sake of first impressions, I'll jot some notes down on a Cimmerian/Thracian Middle Era, based on your database:
First of all, it will feature a large amount of berserkers, who themselves will be better equipped than the "average" berserker unit, and several stealthy units. I'll also decide, for thematic reasons, that the Ordes are somehow related, or atleast similar, to the Van, and give them a Capital only Glamour unit. They'll be the only non-human recruit, and won't be sacred. Doryphoro-Dacian militia, armed with spear, round shield, javelins. Triballoi-well equipped berserkers, armed with longsword, javelins, round shield, leather armour. Pelekuphoroi-bushwhackers, armed with bronze axe, scalemail, round shield. Stealthy (5) Epilektoi-elite melee, armed with studded leather, longsword, javelins, Thracian helmet. Prodromoi-Medium calvalry armed with light lance, round shield, sica. Pylakes Daoi-mounted berserkers (I don't think we've seen mounted berserkers before, in the game) Hippotoxotai-Elite Horse-archers armed with shortsword, composite bow. Unarmoured. 16 morale, berserk (0), Stealth (0) Komatai-Sacred, armed with large shield, leather armour, javelins, and a sica, which will do 3 damage, and be armour-piercing. Stealth (0). No helmet. Drapanai-Sacred, Berserk (2), armed with the Falx, which will be armour-piercing, and do 6 points of damage. No armour. Rhomphaiaphoroi-Sacred, equipped with the two-handed Rhomphaia, plus a small shield, and a full suit of chainmail. The Rhomphaia will be armour-piercing, and do fully 9 points of damage. Absolutely elite human soldiers, close to the Emerald Guard in terms of stats. Lots and lots of resources for these guys, though. Sphendonetai-Slingers with small shields and shortswords. Toxotai-Archers armed with composite bow, spear, 12 Morale, and Stealth (5) Agrianai-Elite archers, armed with composite bow, studded leather, and longsword. Prec 11. Morale 13. Stealth (5) Ktistai-Capital Only, Calvalry, Sacred, armed with composite bow, falx, chainmail, Thracian helmet. Ischyroi Orditon-Capital Only, Glamour, Stealth (0), armed with sica, chainmail, Thracian helmet Now ofcourse, these could all change a lot, in creating a mod, but it's a good basis for an original human Middle Era Nation, I think. |
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Quick bump because I just added 5 sprites to these guys. Usually, when I have as many done as I have now for a Nation, I start to pick up speed on sprite completion. Hopefully, that will happen here in the next few weeks.
By the way, I realize there's going to be some scaling issues with my sprites. As soon as I'm physically able to playtest my mod Nations, I'll start working on those, and also on resolving some of the other art issues that will doubtless present themselves. |
Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
It looks like this has proven to be true: I redid the artwork on many of these units, and also added many more sprites. It's not done yet, but it's definitely coming along at a much faster rate of progress.

Re: Cimmeria-Land of Darkness and Fog
Now that I have a new computer, and have had enough time to get it working the way I want it to, I've gone back and looked at my old mods, to see about getting them into atleast working order.
Cimmeria's the first one to achieve "semi-playable" status. It loads properly. All the units and most of the weapons/armour are in the .dm. Nothing is balanced, though, and very few of the sprites are properly assigned (so it won't work right yet for you, unless you assign some). But it does work, so that's something, and getting it polished at this point is only a matter of a few weekends. |
