Question about 'bookmarks'

Hello again,

I was wondering about the bookmark section below the posts in forums.. are those recommended by Shrapnel? or a set of 'default' bookmarks that came with the newly installed forums/site?

The reason I ask is that I might fool around with making a set of more unified icons for the bookmark links. And, if I do, do I wast time on the existing ones or will you be changing them to point to other affiliates and sub-sites?

Curious minds want to know ;)

Cheers!

Re: Question about 'bookmarks'

Well 4 of them are default, the rest I put in based on other info from the vbulletin community. I just resized the images so they were all the same size and threw it all together. I'd certainly look at anything you offered up David, my only request would be that people still know what bookmark they are clicking on, lol.

Maybe this is a silly question, but what are the bookmarks for?

Personally they have put me abit to shame. Im supposed to have an account on any system that could be put into such a collection. Mindi actually put some that I dont have. I have some catch up to do now.

Re: Question about 'bookmarks'

People who belong to different social bookmarking sites....like Digg for example, click on the link and add it as a bookmark in that site. They do so not only so they can find it again, but also to share it with others in that bookmarking site. It's basically a social networking tool for things you are interested in and things you don't want to forget about. Many of these sites have a lot of additional features as well. Here a wikipedia link if you want to learn a little more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking

Although I got a lot of them by swiping them from others who provided them on vbulletin.org, I did a lot of searching myself to try to be as encompassing to as many people as possible. I'm sure there are even more than I found.

Re: Question about 'bookmarks'

Another Question,.. are the bookmark icons 'hardcoded' to 16x16 size? or could I make them 24x24? I have an 'effect' in mind and if I could make the bookmark icons a bit bigger than the 16x16 it would be a breeze to do up a batch.

I'll post a sample tomorrow morning.. I got to go get my beauty sleep now, err I mean my old bones need a good 8 hours of horizontal stabilization on a comfy mattress.

Cheers! :)

Sorry, we shut down computers and tried to get to bed on time last night for the first time in about 5 days. Yes I think those would certainly fit in with the look of the site. If you put them in a zip file and attach it to a post, I can upload them sometime today.

Those look nice, but a little too dark for my taste. Can you light up the bluish buttons a little more? Light blue to gray, maybe?

Re: Question about 'bookmarks'

Before I save them all as individual gif images.. I'm still flushing out some ideas.. here is the latest style..

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...kmarkIcons.png

Also, in the process of making sure the icons represent the latest links I found some were dead links, or site non existant..

clesto.com, fungow.com, hyperlinkomatic.com, ma.gnolia.com, newsvine.com and onlywire.com are all bad links, also, the netscape link points to the new 'propeller.com' and the AOL version of Netscape. I made an icon for each.

Let me know what you think, cheers!

P.S. Mindi want me to name them "bookmark001.gif.. to bookmark041.gif" or would you prefer to send me the original gifs that I can simply replace?

Re: Question about 'bookmarks'

Actually those are better..I think they're more clear. I'll try to audit the links......we're new to doing the code in vb for this particular feature so I wouldn't be surprised if there's some formatting error as not all of the sites submit info the same way. As far as naming them, it would be easiest just to name them whatever service they are (digg.gif, clesto.gif, etc) and I can change any possible name from that....I think most of them I just gave the service's name.

OK, attached is a zip with all the single .gif icons and a "_Blank.png" (which is an alpha channel ping image you can use to overlay on any 16x16 icon to make it fit the new style.)

If you have trouble using the _blank.png you can always send me an email and I'll help.

Cheers! :)

Mindi, I have a question.. Did you need/want a 'Highlight' (mouseover) transparent gif for these bookmarks?

Cheers! :)

I went ahead and made one in case..

Re: Question about 'bookmarks'

I'll have to look if the software will allow that by default.....it's part of the vb software and not a modification so I don't know if it will do that out of the box. BTW, thank you for the png, I made three additional buttons for the links that were broken as 3 of them just had a coding error in the link. A couple others though were gone already and netscape did indeed change their bookmarking tool to propeller.

Re: Question about 'bookmarks'

You are most welcome,.. I know from experience that a 'template' or blank version of a sprite/image/icon comes in handy.. Like the avatars I make, I have the blank frame with the shiny top as a transparent .png. most of the time I just need to find a pic, crop and/or resize and overlay the template.. poof! I got an avatar.. (I save as .gif and of course set the color 255,0,255 to transparent. I also use an optimized pallet for each avatar.)

hmmm.. maybe I'll post my avatar frame in the avatar thread and see if others want to join the fun.

Cheers! :)
