Official Questions Thread

This thread is for questions on how to use existing functionality. All posts that are OT will be removed.

Also, vbulletin comes with a very good base FAQ section: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/faq.p...=vb3_board_faq

I will try to answer as many questions as possible as time permits.

Re: Official Questions Thread

Ooh, I have one! Is there any way to get the forum to e-mail you when a new post is made to a subscribed thread? I used to find that feature extremely useful, but so far haven't managed to find it.

Edit: Answer to my own question. In the control panel, click "List subscriptions" on the left. Once the list's come up, tick the tick boxes on the far right next to the ones you want to be e-mailed for. Then use the action list (labelled "Selected Threads:") below the list of subscriptions to choose the kind of notification you want, and finally click "Go".

Very nice!

Re: Official Questions Thread

No problem. User cp-->edit options-->Messaging and Notifications-->Default Thread Subscription Mode-->then choose either instant email notification, daily email notification or weekly email notification.

Default was set to no email so as to not flood someone's email or think we are spamming them.

Since yesterday new registered users won't be auto subscribed to threads they have posted in so they will have to find this setting on their own.

It's a very nice system. Thanks for the info!

Re: Official Questions Thread

Okay, I have another question! What does the little grey blob above the level graphs mean? For some people it is green, and if you hover over it in that case it says "X is on a distinguished road". lch, for example, is on such a road. Cryptic.

BadCompany August 14th, 2008 12:39 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

Never could figure that out myself.

Edit:Hey look,mine is green. :D

Mindi August 14th, 2008 12:39 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

lol@cryptic

It's the reputation system. If you click on the little scales set at the top right corner of a post you can give people reputation points. The more reputatation you get the higher the level you are. I think everyone starts out as "username is an unknown quantity at this point"....the image changed because they got reputation points and are no longer and 'unknown quantity'. You can give reputation to 10 people per day, but you have to give 20 reputation points before you come back to the same person.

Re: Official Questions Thread

Ok,I noticed that mindi is level 39,but she is only a major. But I've seen someone thats a Brig. Gen but is only level 34,so I assume that level and rank has nothing to do with each other?

Mine says level up 92%,so when it reaches 100% I wont become a corporal?

Mindi August 14th, 2008 12:54 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

Addendum to the reputation: there's some update of stats that needs to happen before this works completely correctly. That probably won't happen until this weekend because anything that has to update user or post table is server intensive and we are trying to minimalize any possibility of downtime or even slowdown.

Okay onto the next question, the bars are from a mod called vbexperience. We haven't done anything with this modification yet (low priority right now), but basically it's another way of measuring your activity here taking into account more than just post count. If you look on your user profile there is a tab for it, but right now it's not a main tab so you have to click the little arrow icon (should look like the last tab in user profile). That tab has more information about what each bar stands for.

Mindi August 14th, 2008 12:56 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

I just saw you edit, no you would still be a corporal. Basically we can eventually make vbexperience a rewards system for additional privileges on the board. Like I said, right now it is base install though so it's just going to show you the level that you are on and how far to the next one, etc.

Annette August 14th, 2008 12:58 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

There's also a description of how the reputation system works in the base FAQ link found in the black menu bar at the top of the forum page, as Mindi pointed out. Here's a direct link:

Re: Official Questions Thread

Okay, another one. How does the Multi-Quote feature work? It has me stumped for the moment.

Hope you don't mind me asking all these questions. I'm hoping other people will see the answers to them here as well.

Mindi August 14th, 2008 01:20 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

Nope, don't mind at all, that's why we put some organization around these conversations. Okay, say you want to quote 3 people in a thread (3 is the max right now), find the posts, click the multiquote icon.....once you have found all three posts and click all three multiquote buttons, click post reply and see what happens. ;)

lch August 14th, 2008 01:54 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

That's very useful. Usually I need to start opening their quote buttons in tabs and then start to copy and paste. A nice feature.

lch August 14th, 2008 03:06 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

Some threads have made it into my "New Subscribed Threads" box in the User CP without me knowingly adding them in any way. I am getting "Your Notifications" about them now, too. Uhm, why?

Mindi August 14th, 2008 03:11 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

Originally anything you posted in auto subscribed you to those thread. That's been changed by default for new users but there is no way to go change it for all users without overwriting changes that individual users have made. If you want auto subscribe turned off go to usercp-->edit options-->Messaging & Notification-->Default Thread Subscription Mode-->Select Do Not Subscribe.

Oh and don't forget to save!

Re: Official Questions Thread

Is there any way to turn off the auto-logout feature?

Mindi August 15th, 2008 04:26 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

Auto-logout is standard with vbulletin software unless you click the 'remember me' box when you log in. Are you clicking this box and still getting logged out? I've had one report of this and told that person to clear their cache and cookie an login again clicking remember me, but I have yet to hear back so I don't know if this is an issue of broken functionality or not.

Big brother is watching you

1 Attachment(s)
I just noticed that you can spy on what another user is doing in his member page. While this might be a nice idea in general, is it possible to disable this?

Attachment 6657

Also, is it possible to attach images AND show them at full size, somehow, instead of just as a preview pic? Or do you really need to link to an offsite image for that?

In your User CP under Other Edit Options there is a setting for privacy. Try setting yours to "invisible". I think this will disable that view. Mindi, please correct me if I'm wrong.

First be sure you are not in "quick reply" mode, then use the attachment icon to upload your image file. Then click on the arrow to the right of the attachment icon and select the uploaded image you wish to display. It will appear in your post as , which you can cut and past into whatever part of your post you would like it to appear.

Attachment 6659

In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes.

Yes I believe that's the way that works as it won't show you to regular users that you are even online.

Re: Official Questions Thread

Well, I guess that what I want isn't possible by default: Allow others to see if I'm browsing the same forum as they are by listing my name in there, too, but not enabling them to see what I do ("plays Hexxagon - AGAIN!") from my user page. Not that I'm paranoid about it. It probably is an on or off, all or nothing, with this, but that's not an issue for me, don't worry about it.

Sure you can but you need to use the insert image button as well as the attachment procedure as the only reason you are seeing the thumbnail is because it recognizes the attachment as an image and wants to show a preview.

Also, if your picture is wider than what we think is appropriate for the forum, it will resize it within the window and allow you to click on it in order to see the full image.

Below, the first picture is done as just the attach button. You will se it only shows it as the thumnail version. The second one is done with the image button and you see it at full size. I uploaded a larger version and put it as the 3rd pic and you will see that it's been resized.

Re: Official Questions Thread

Thank you for these extensive examples, Mindi.

Herode October 1st, 2008 09:03 AM

User ctrl panel/ user notifications

In the User notifications panel, I have a notification for 5 "new private messages". BTW, these are just copies of some message I've sent & tracked. But how can I delete these notifications ? I don't see any link/button for this... :o

Annette October 1st, 2008 10:00 AM

Re: Official Questions Thread

When viewing your messages, click on the white check box to the right of the message for each you'd like to delete. Then scroll down to the bottom of the list and you'll see a pull down menu for the action you'd like to take on the selected messages (I think the default is "move to folder"). Choose delete messages, then okay.

I would really love to do that, but... there is no check box :D
Moreover, if I open one of the messages, check the "delete" checkbox at the very bottom of the message, then click the "delete" button near the checkbox... the message still shows

Annette October 1st, 2008 07:27 PM

Re: Official Questions Thread

Try going one step further and click on "New Private Messages" in the blue bar. That should take you to the page with the check boxes. And thank you for the screen shot; that goes a long way to helping see what you see!

Herode October 2nd, 2008 02:25 AM

Re: Official Questions Thread

Haaaa, almost true !

BTW, clicking on this link takes me to the Private Messages In Folder while the messages shown on the screen are "sent messages". But now I've just deleted all my "sent items" and the screen is now clean.

Thanks for the tip & your patience ! :p

I found the answer myself here

Personally, I think this is a rather annoyingly silly setting, but whatever.
