2nd Dominions community
Hi together,
yesterday i noticed that a new 'somethingawful let's play Dominions multiplayer thread' (http://forums.somethingawful.com/sho...0&pagenumber=1) has started ... great ... the first one by matryx was one of the reasons for me to buy this game. In the last 3 weeeks i read a lot here in the forum and am playing two games by myself, but i never met here someone from the above mentioned forum game ... instead i noticed that there is a games server (goon server) where only somethingawful registered players may play. Now i wonder why the ( cool but not really large) dom3 community is split into two forums ? Is there a reason or am i totally wrong ? greetings |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
I think it's pretty much because everyone at this forum isn't going to want to drop the 80 dollars a month to have an account at somethingisawful.com, and the people over there aren't going to care enough what forum they're posting on to take their business over here.

Re: 2nd Dominions community
$80 a month! That must be the rich kids forum. Typical i didn't even know about it. And the quality of their AARs seems to be so much better than ours: does anyone even write AARs anymore, here? No wonder the somethingawful kids are more successful in Dom3! They have all the advantages.
Let's challenge them to a duel. Our scrappy pro from the bad side of town, Micah, vs their rich, had all the best Dom3 training player Biff, winner take all! Happy Friday! PS Looks like they have better maps too! Which map is that? |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
Isn't it the one that has dom3goons irc channel or smth like that? If it's that we did some blitzes with them some time ago and they lost badly.

Re: 2nd Dominions community
Umm.... It's more like a one time $10 fee. Where did you pull $80/mo from?

Re: 2nd Dominions community
I think the map is the last player made dom2 map. Shahrivar. It might be around somewhere.
Edit: Yep. It's still on our dom2 site. It's a rar file. http://www.illwinter.com/dom2/maps.html |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
They seem to have less guides. Or at least less easy to find. One-thread-includes-all is a bit hard on newcomers I'd say.
There was a nice Gath guide in the last part of one of the threads. I only took a short look into the 50 or so pages thread. QT3 also has a multi purpose dominions thread with ongoing games. I don't know if there are others. Ah, the french one of course. |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
:-) a huge kingmaker-like game between both forums would really be cool ... we could call it ... somethingshrapnel.
The map they are playing is like KO said the Shahrivar map ... it is the dom3 version made by Sombre ... you can also find it here in the forum http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showt...ahrivar&page=3 btw. a beautiful map @KO the guys on somethingawful made a really good job for you ... on every page you can at least count one msg 'i bought the game because of this thread' :-) I don't know if they have other guides there, but this lp was like a huge tutorial for me ... they explained nearly every aspect of the game and showed me how to play it in multiplayer ... to see that mp games are soo fantastic was, as i said, one of the main reasons for me to buy this game ... it was really funny to read their diplomacy and their cheatings. |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
I can understand that. I was most impressed by the LP. I felt like buying the game myself :)
It's a pity the AAR's are placed together with the MP games. Now they are drowned by MP threads after a day or so. I wonder how many new players will ever find them. There were some nice ones in the beginning, but I don't think I have seen one since. I do not look into the MP forum more than once or thrice a week (perhaps a bit more frequently lately). |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
I had an idea that has been on hold for lack of time but I discussed it once with llama. I'd host a game of say 8 experienced players. I wouldn't play but would ask everyone to send in occasional write-ups of their pretenders, strategy, diplomacy, research with screen shots etc. and then I'd put it all together in one nice AAR. IMHO it would be a great resource for new players to get a feel for the whole game and what kind of strategies are commonly employed.
Unfortunately I have been rather busy playing myself and wasn't sure how interested players would be since it would take a lot more time than a usual game entails. I suppose if there was some interest from players I could make the time. I imagined the end product would be a pdf like document similar to one Torin did a while back - the Druids of Carnutes or something like that IIRC. |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
The Laser Squad Nemesis crew did a "Learning LSN" feature where players would blog about their turns and strategy and what they expected the opponent to do during the same turn. When you put it all together it made for a really great learning tool because you could see how accurate one player's predictions were and how their strategy matched up compared to someone who was working with less accurate information. It was usually broken up by turn with the occasional host commentary about when someone made an obvious tactical mistake that the viewer should learn from.
It was a really great tool, but LSN games last 15-30 rounds so the PDF file didn't end up too long like a Dom3 one would. |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
I played in a different community before Katrina. New Orleans actually has a local gaming site with about 100 members of all ages 15-50. We would actually meet at a bowling ally etc from time to time.
Dominions was not the only game played, however. Katrina killed the community, and when I returned to New Orleans, and was able to get internet, I joined this community. VGA planets had a strong following on the old new orleans site, as did Dom II. |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
The SA community isn't another Dom3 community, it's a gaming community in general, same for QT3 and the OO crowd. (Something Awful, Quarter to Three, Octopus Overlords) I started off at the latter before moving to here, too.
I do hate extremely big all-purpose threads for games like they seem to do it at those sites, though, too. They have threads with over 60 pages about Dom3 or Dwarf Fortress etc. and EVERYTHING about that game is being posted in there. That might support their discussion board structure that everything about a specific game is in there, but like KO wrote it's totally impossible for an outsider to keep on track about what's going on in there if you just decide to jump into the middle of it. Lots of good and interesting posts might just drown in there. EDIT: Forget a mere 60 pages, apparently they're over 180 pages right now at QT3. |
Re: 2nd Dominions community
Yep. I poked around for a few minutes and haven't been back since. :)
