Concerning luck

What about luck?

There is two types of luck; individual and scale(province).

Individual luck is a matter of personal attributes, artifacts and spells? Province based luck, on the other hand, is a matter of scales chosen in the beginning? Right?

If former was correct, my main concern is what type of luck affects on what....

Examples and first hand questions:

-Does province/scale luck have effect on voidgate summoning? How about personal luck?

-Does province/scale luck have effect on crossbreeding? How about personal luck?

-Does province/scale luck have effect when horror marked? How about personal luck?

-Does province/scale luck have effect wether or not target is going to be diseased? How about personal luck?

-Does province/scale luck have effect on hiding/getting revealed? How about personal luck?

-Does personal luck stack, or does it have any other cumulative attributes?

-Does curse bring in misfortune in any other occasions than in combat?

If you know anything neat that concrns luck, please let us hear from you. Do not hold your peace forever.

Re: Concerning luck

Personal luck only does one thing.

It negates 50% of physical attacks. And I think it helps against a few select damage spells in a similar manner. Other than that, it has no effect.

Dominion Luck scales affect Crossbreeding(more Luck is better stuff summonned). Hidden in Snow also has some Luck-based effect.

"No" to your other questions (though I'm not sure on void gate summoning).

Don't forget that better luck scale gets you the national heroes more easily. That's all I use it for, actually.

Re: Concerning luck

I think Luck scale is at least supposed to affect Void Gate, but it's been a long time and I'm not sure any more. It might be that I just wanted Luck to help there.

Only damage spells?

So no help against MR-negating, non-battle spells like Vengeance of the Dead?

Also, does Twist Fate help against non-battle spells like Vengeance of the Dead?

Re: Concerning luck

There is also a third component of luck, commanders with the ability to reduce the probability of bad events. Through the forums there are posts of many players who swear by this ability.

That is called "Fortune telling", it's quite powerful and rare, but it's a very different, thing. It helps to lower the bad effects of Misfortune scales

How about internal alchemy, does luck, and which of those, have influence on success?

Tifone September 14th, 2008 12:36 PM

Re: Concerning luck

Don't think so. But alchemists give you more gold if you alchemize fire or earth gems for gold. That's all.

Internal alchemy is a Tien Chi spell that has side effect which might turn you insane.

I was asking if luck, and which one, might affect wether mage turns insane or not?

Re: Concerning luck

Personal Luck only potentially affects the damage part of spells. For example, if you cast Falling Frost on a Lucky unit, it might avoid the damage but will have Frozen effect(or whatever it's called).

Also, personal Luck can also help you avoid the damage that some rituals do. For example, Seeking Arrow is a damaging ritual and personal Luck protects 50% from that.

So no, as far as I know personal Luck does not affect anything other than damage.

What of Twist Fate?

What of Twist Fate?

I believe Twist Fate works the same way, but it only protects 100% from the first damage. It doesn't seem to protect against side effects(like the chill from a Falling Frost).

The Twist Fate effect from an Astral 9 Bless is a little wierd in that commanders wearing a Blessed Shroud and Prophets are Blessed all the time, so they can get Twist Fate protection from Rituals (but I think it is only once a turn, so I'd need to check).

I would be surprised if an always S9 blessed unit is protected about Seeking Arrows, Fires from Afar and so... but it would be an amazing surprise :D

I agree with Tifone. Primarily because the spells cited do not involve the battlefield map where the blesses actually occur, to my thinking.

K mentioned Shrouds and prophethood (two ways to be blessed outside of battlefields) two posts above yours...

Re: Concerning luck

There has been a post somewhere, sometime where someone tested which effects helped against seeking arrows. (shields, armour, air shield...) I'm almost completely certain he concluded that luck helps (50% of the time obviously), and that twist fate negated the first attack.

No idea on how to find that thread though, and also don't have the urge to try, so you'll have to trust my memory. :smirk:

Luck and a missile prot item are the only good ways to protect against seeking arrow.

So is there any comprehensive list when and where does luck have effect?

I see how I was wrong now. The prophet has the bless attributes on the main screen.

18 months of playing and I never noticed that before.

I just thought they didn't require a bless on the battlefield to have bless bonus.

Re: Concerning luck

If you have a shroud on, or are a prophet, and your bless includes twist fate, it will protect against the first seeking arrow. I think just the first one though, could be wrong.

Does Twist Fate works against MR-checking spells like Soul Slay, Petrification, etc.?

I personally think that the bug where prophets twist fate from the bless does not work is still around.

In a game where I have an S9 bless, I sent several mages into battle wearing Shrouds. None of them showed the Twist Fate symbol at any time during the battle, and several of them were damaged or killed by an earthquake in the first round (it was the first thing that could potentially have damaged them).

Hmmm, I tend to always go for the max Astral Bless. Perhaps it ain't as useful then (even more so, given that my mod removes most of the high-level overpowered astral spells like Master Enslave)? :)

Oops - hang on. It is a bit more complicated. This is an SP game where I'm toying around with strategies, so I had the game folder backed up and could replay things.

Originally, I had equipped the mages with the shroud in the same turn that I ordered them to attack the next province. I looked at one of the survivors, and now he *did* have the shamrock Twist Fate icon (even out of battle, so one would expect it to work on Seeking Arrow). I sent him off alone vs some PD, and the Twist Fate worked normally.

So I went back to the previous turn, and instead of ordering the army to attack in the same turn in which I put the Shrouds on the mages, I had them sit one turn. The mages then got the icon for the start of the next turn. I ordered the army off to attack, and the Twist Fate worked correctly.

So there is a lag of one turn. A commander only gets the benefit of the Shroud starting the turn after it is equipped. I haven't checked, but I'll bet this is not specific to the S9 bless.

Re: Concerning luck

I've used Shrouds quite a bit, I would bet that it actually IS isolated to the Twist Fate effect.

The difference, is that the other blesses only affect stats, which are completely dynamic throughout the turn because of gear changes.

The Twist Fate blessing however, gets only 1 "charge", and it's likely that since there are generally very few units who are blessed outside of combat, that there is just 1 universal check during turn resolution - since it has to be applied as a spell effect, not a stat increase.

Anyways I can tell you with all certainty that every time I've used a Shroud, all other bless effects showed up immediately.
