Perry Rhodan?
I was in a hobby shop over the weekend (looking for model train stuff for my future father-in-law) and saw a couple spaceship models that I hadn't ever heard of - something called "Perry Rhodan". A web search indicates it's a German-based scifi series that's been around for 30+ years. Anyone else know about it, and whether it would make a good SE4 shipset?

Re: Perry Rhodan?
To my limited knowledge, Perry Rhodan is about the most popular SF series on the planet (in terms of book sales). There is (or was) a new novel published every week (by different authors under various pen names), IIRC. I only have one book, "Jubilaeumsband," in commemoration of the 1000th novel printed in the series (and it dates from 1980). I'd think that anyone attempting to adapt all of it to SE4 would have a massive task in front of them! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Great to hear your father-in-law to be is a railroad nut. So am I. Sorry to say I have not heard of Perry Rhodan.

Re: Perry Rhodan?
neither have i. and i thought that i kept up with those things. not to discredit your acclaimation, just to say that my keeping up is not what it should be.
rather than ask for an elaboration, i guess i am off to look up reviews and accounts of said series. in order to encourage self reliance and an enterprising attitude, i would pleade that you not post such an elaboration. while open communication and shared (GPL hippies? Napster Priates?) information may proliferate knowledge, i firlmy believe that it cripples it in the long run by breeding an inept generation of humans that cant do anything for themselves. whoops, wrong thread. sorry. just countermanded my own arguements, too. ------------------ "...the green, sticky spawn of the stars" (with apologies to H.P.L.) |
Re: Perry Rhodan?
I have close to the whole set of the series, over 200+ books. Series was good as far as ship sets, It has been long time since I read them so I'll have to check on this for you. I have them all boxed and sealed so please give me some time to get back into it. If I remember right, a number of the covers had some good artwork but like I said I'll have to check and see if they are worth your time.
In regards to the series, it was a very popular in its time, Humans found alien space ship in desert along with aliens in deep sleep, took over the ship, then earth then intersteller wars etc. Its been a long time since I read it, I gues I'll have to start re-reading it. The movie was crappy and not at all like the series.. just some ideas mac |
Re: Perry Rhodan?
Glad other people have heard of it; I guess it's time to do some more serious searching. The main page (www.Perry-Rhodan.com, I think) is in German, so it's a bit difficult for me to navigate (my high-school Latin doesn't help much with reading foreign Languages...). Anyway, the ships I've seen so far look pretty cool, and at least somewhat different from the standard races, not to mention different from the usual sci-fi (Star Trek, Star Wars, Bab5) mods.

Re: Perry Rhodan?
A long time ago (early seventies) they were being reprinted here in the states (I believe PR originated in Germany). Forrest J Akerman coined the phrase Sci-Fi to describe the series.
I read the 1st several (10)books. Very light reading and entertaining. Stopped because I am a stickler for reading things in order and couldn't find the next book. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif Galaxy is a bit like those of the EE 'Doc' Smith space operas (as far as ships, tech, space battles go) from the thirties. I believe there was a pretty horrid movie made from it also. |
Re: Perry Rhodan?
hi, i am a noob on playing se4, but it is like drugs in my veins. i am also a big fan of scifi and especially of perry rhodan. when somebody knows where i can get shipsets or a mod about perry rhodan, it would be xmas and birthday at the same day for me.
i think that perry rhodan is one of the best scifi series, i ever see. i have read about 1000 of these booklets (every booklet has about 62 pages)and i am still enthusiastic reading it. now there are 2171 of these booklets out and every week a new one is publisht. when sombody like to see more information about pr i can give you a short summary, what happens in the first 1000 booklets. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif so whish nice gaming and give me a hint when you see something about a pr mod. p.s. sorry for my bad english, but it is not my native language |

Re: Perry Rhodan?
Yes I remember the PR series. The paperback books started out at 50 cents each. Still it was a lot for a young kid in the 70's. I would vist the bookstore and bring back 2 or three new one each visit. I recall coming home once and sitting down on the couch and not looking up till I had read the whole book.
There are LOTS of ships described from small one man scouts to planet size super dreadnoughts. Lots of various beams and missiles too. I remember massive battles with 1000's of ships on each side. The story line went from book to book with each one ending in a cliff hanger. I may even still have some of the books in an old bookcase. |

Re: Perry Rhodan?
Hey Perry Rhodan. I did not know that it is still published in the States too. The most young men in Germany/Austria are reading these tiny little booklets. I am grown up with it and today I am reading one or another of stories from time to time.
Its the most read pulp SF series in the world (I think they claim it is translated in 20 Languages or so) I think some of the Perry Rhodan setting is very good suited to SEIV. But that I guess that the Terran empire comprises several galaxies (at least in No 2000) Difficult to simulate this in SEIV. klausD |
