Listening to Music during gameplay

I trust that no one constantly listens to the default European Folk music and listens to additional music with their winamps:

Any favorites?

Hinnom - Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah by Therion

I just leave my pandora station running in the background.

Heh, celtic folk in Winamp instead of default folk. Clannad, Mora Braenn, Celtic Spirit
Also slow tracks of Evanescense, Cranberries, Within Temptaion, Gathering and Nightwish

I use the site Last.FM quite abit. I like that users can put tag words on music. Ive found it quite interesting to play Dom3 while listening to a "radio station" created by selecting the "game music" tag. Lots of music from games like Final Fantasy or Zelda or World of Warcraft.

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

I use soundtracks of movies which theme is quite the same of the nation I'm playing - for Ulm i.e. Conan the Barbarian (very good ost imho), mictlan=apocalypto, ea ermor=the gladiator, t'ien c'hi= House of Flying Daggers, Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon... for the ones without a specific movie's ost, I just go for general "epic movies". :p

I... listen to the game's normal music. Or at least I did until my computer exploded, I ended up having to replace absolutely everything and I still haven't gotten my sound working.

HoneyBadger October 3rd, 2008 04:08 PM

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

I listened to as much of the game music as I could stand (more than any sensible person, but not an infinite amount)-and I enjoyed it, honestly. I wish we had 10-12 more tracks from the same group, and maybe some Nation-specific stuff.

Other than that, I just tend to listen to a lot of Joe Satriani, Yngvie Malmsteen, and that sortof high quality instrumental hard rock.

I listen to whatever I like at the moment. This sometimes includes the game's music. (Either directly from the game or from the media player)

Hardly "back" as per my signature, but thank you anyway :)
I have some free time now, and probably in the next couple of weeks, because I just finished my Tironut and I'll have some free time before my actual service begins. (If you remember from what I wrote in my farewell thread :))
And when that begins I'll probably have very little time (But will probably have constant internet access so might be able to visit and post occasionally)

Well, I figured you weren't done yet, but it's nice to hear from you. Send me a PM sometime and tell me how everything's going?

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

when I care to load winamp instead of the def music, I have several soundtracks:

"Eerie": For Ryleh, Atlantis, LA Mictlan, my creepified Pangea: Mongol theme 1, from Shogun, Total War.

"Dark": a collection of general themes, fitting for most nations:
C&C TD GDI Map, Batman Begin´s Title theme, Vangelis's 1492 Title theme, Marc Morgan´s "Bones of the Night" and "The Shadows".

"Action": another general one: LoK "Kain´s theme"(Ozar Midrashiv), Red Alert "In deep", Alan Silvestri-Journey to Transilvania

Empire: for EA and MA Ermor, and Pythium: MTW-Euro Mobilize 2, RTW-Journey to Rome, RTW-Forever.

The Yeah Yeah Yeah's _Gold Lion_ is always good for Dominions.

The Thermals have a number of good Dominions songs. _Power Doesn't Run on Nothing_ is Lanka's official anthem, though in a pinch it can also be used for Mictlan.

Nope, I have my own collection of European folk to add to it. ;)

Basically anything by Hedningarna, Qntal, or Gjallerhorn fits perfectly with dominions.

Some metal also works pretty well, I like Nightwish.

How about FinnTroll for Jotunheim? Especially 'En Maktig Har'

They have some very "Jotunish" videos on YouTube, too.

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

FinnTroll? Too brutal for strategy...background when observing battles - maybe, main theme - no. If I need heavy metal for Dominions, I`ll better add Tiamat and Gathering into my playlist
-
Somebody listen old-scool classic metal bands like Blind Guardian or Manowar? Fantasy speed/power metal. Try to start as Ulm, Marignon or Man with Blind Guardian`s "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" album

HoneyBadger October 5th, 2008 03:31 AM

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

I like brutal when I'm strategizing-it encourages my mean streak!

"Blood-Red Sandman" by Lordi is a good themesong for Sombre's Arga Dis.

For *really* old school heavy metal that fits Dominions, you can't beat Dio's 'Holy Diver' :)

Crevan October 5th, 2008 04:11 AM

Dio? Whoa, somebody still remember them?

Over 2000 years, and we haven't forgotten Jesus. And unlike Jesus, Dio's still giving interviews :p

I had some scandinavian collection like Finntroll, Mithotyn and Amon Amarth. Ditched them to an adolescent metal fan kid. I returned to jazz, blues, rock and classical music. I can no longer endure that brutal stuff constantly, only one in a week.

I don't think jazz quite fits Niefelheim...as much as I like jazz.

If you have a taste for swedish symphonic metal, you can always listen to Therion. They have several Dominions-applicable songs....

Another good artist (especially if you like Yngwie Malmsteen--talking to you, JaghataiKhan) to listen to while playing Dom3 is Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions, Sky Academy.).

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

Blackmore's Night has a crapload of songs that make for excellent background music for Dominions 3.

For Hinnom, Scarecrow by Tobias Sammett's Avantasia makes for an awesome theme song. A part:

...
So you're an angel meant to walk down here
And you say it's all divine
And you don't play by all those temporal rules
You watch the world begin to die...
...

If that doesn't scream Lord of Civilization to you, I wonder what would...

I have all of Dio's earlier albums on CD, and rather few of those songs bring to mind Dominions for me. Scarecrow on the other hand is a different story. It's probably the slower pace it begins with that does the trick. It's also 11 minutes and change in length.

HoneyBadger October 8th, 2008 02:54 PM

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

Well, I'll definitely check it out.

You're right about the slower pace, that's harder to find in really good, thematic rock. Somebody should invent, like, "durge metal" or something, to mean metal that's slower, more Trance-like, with fantastic/midieval themes.

Edi-I'm definitely digging Blackmore's Night over here.

Poopsi: oh yes! That's very good Dom 3 music!

Pompeii=EA Abyssia all the way.
Unstoppable=EA Caelum, with all the mammoths.
Odenall Pi=EA Arco?
Ebla=MA Ermor.
Lepsis Magna=EA Ermor
Menouthis=Possibly Sauromatia? definitely something for JimMorrison's lizard-king to dance to :).
Harappa=EA Atlantis.

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

I quite like the default music, but Boom Boom Satellites, Devo or some other crazy fusion music is more to my taste. If I'm feeling particularly confident I'll turn any music off and sing the following words to the tune from Blackadder...

Crush maul crush maul crush maul crush,
Crush maul crush maul crush, I'll crush you,
Crush maul crush maul crush maul crush,
I'll crush, I'll crush, I'll crush, I'll crush you,

[chorus]
I'll crush you, I'll crush you,
'cos you are feeble and weak,
I'll crush you, I'll crush you,
Crush you into next week!

Alternatively, repeating the words "I'm the Greatest!" to the tune of Amazing Grace can have a similar effect. Is this a good time to request in-game voice comms?

HoneyBadger October 24th, 2008 03:52 AM

Re: Listening to Music during gameplay

I think voice comms are a bit down the road, maybe in a few updates, or so?

In the meantime, it'd be great if there were a program that would somehow assign music on your computer to the different Nations in an MP game, so that it would play for you, as a theme song for whichever Nation you're playing--and when other Nations attacked you, it would play their theme.
