New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

6 Attachment(s)
A new EA nation, mainly inspired by Stonehenge and megalithic monuments.
Cantabira is a late-Palaeolithic/early-Bronze Age nation, with powerful mages and priests, but military quite underequipped. The nation have good summons and good sacred.

Cantabira:

Early Era

Strengths:
- Good mages
- Good national spells
- Good variety of national summons, including many animals
- Strong and varied sacred
- Heavy (but expensive !) wooly rhinoceros trampling cavalry

Weaknesses:
- Many cheap but weak troops.
- Bad equipment, some troops even have protection 0!
- Lack of archers and cavalry, except for rhino mounted cavalry (powerful but costly)
- Many good commanders are Cap only, limiting access to some magic paths and making some recruitment choices a bit more difficult.
- Sacred are good, but several are Cap only.

Cantabira currently uses unit slots 2400 - 2450,nation slot 86, magic site slots 840-842, weapon slots 920-922, armor slot 260.

Well, everybody, I'm waiting for your advices.

Do you think it is balanced or not ?

Do you think Blood Maiden should be Cap only ? I hesitated about that.

Do you think the prices are OK ?

I will add national spells once they're completely done.

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

I find it very hard to judge balance in this format. It would be better to complete the graphics and release the mod, and then hone balance afterwards.

It sounds like a fun idea anyway, I'd encourage you to go ahead with it.

Sombre October 10th, 2008 07:36 AM

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Yes this one sounds good and I agree with llama in regards to the balance.

The best way to get balance suggestions is to release a mod, with a graphical preview, maybe get a multiplayer game or two set up with it. The feedback will then come and be more than cursory.

Nounours October 10th, 2008 09:51 AM

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Graphics are almost finished, I'll release the mod probably next week...

Great, looking forward to it.

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

I added a general view of graphics.

I have to finish the sprites of two sacred (Scarred One & Blood Maiden), of summonable undead units, heroes and one more summonable (it will probably be called Earthborn). Plus possibly one or two other summons, I'm not sure.

I hope you'll enjoy the sprites !!

Nounours, you've got a lot of talent for making sprites.

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Very, very nice. I promised I'd try out your tibetan mod and I will right now.

But yes, excellent sprites. They fit very well in the dom3 world.

Btw I notice you used the Ogre Kingdoms rhinox sprite as a base for your woolly rhino - please feel free to use any of my sprites in any way that will help you or speed things up for you.

-two thumbs up-

Nounours October 10th, 2008 06:09 PM

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Sombre, thanks, your Ogre Kingdom mod is great.
In fact, I used the Rhinox outline, another attempt I had already made and a wooly rhino drawing I found... but the Rhinox saved me a lot of time :D!

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

I agree with others, you've got a talent for makings sprites. I recognize some of the sources (Tir Na Nog/Eriu troops for that bronze look, MA Agartha's Attendant of Oracles etc) but they fit together very well.

However, word of caution: if players can choose armored troops, they won't have any reason to buy unarmored troops. See EA Marverni - you don't have to buy the low-prot troops, so you don't. Mapmove 2, prot 10 units with shield aren't as good as MA Ermor/Pythium Principes, but quite close, and this is Early age, so your nationals are actually pretty good compared to some other nations.

Of course, in Early age other nations have Niefels and Palankashas and Burning Ones and Warriors of the Five Elements as recruitables, so the ccompetition is much harsher than in MA.

Yes, I tested the mod myself, and it appeared that I wasn't recruiting the low-prot units...

So I've considered raising the price and/or resource cost for armored troops, to reflect the fact that in Cantabira, bronze is yet a costful resource, and perhaps make unprotected clansmen a bit more interesting to recruit, at least sometimes.

What do you think of that ?

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Great work !

Some suggestions for new units/summons :

Cave Bear
Cave Hyena
Irish Giant Deer (Megaceros) (Can be a nice cavalry unit too)

Endoperez October 11th, 2008 11:27 AM

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

That's what I'd do in your situation. High resource cost (for such a low-prot unit) might make it easier to mass cheaper units and cast Marble Warriors (or something) at them.

HoneyBadger October 11th, 2008 02:09 PM

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

These look great. I like the theme of prehistoric beasties. I'm a *little* surprised that you don't have any caveman units, though.

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Aren't shields and swords too much advanced for a paeolithic/neolithic nation ? ( Ooops just have seen that you describe it as a an early bronze nation, so shields and swords are more common ! )

I Love your summons !

Nounours October 11th, 2008 03:45 PM

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Good news, Spendios, Cave bears are planned ! For Cave hyaenas & megaceros, I still don't know, it depend largely from my skills at drawing 'em.

HB, there'll be cave men, or more precisely Neanderthals. They'll be a summon (Cantabiran slaugther nearly all of them, but Cantabiran mages are able to "summon" some).

HoneyBadger October 11th, 2008 04:52 PM

Ok, I was just curious about that. Thanks for the info :)

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

A new summon for Cantabira : Fossil Beast !!

It's the big T-Rex-like undead thing at the bottom of summons, in the graphic overview (see first page of this thread).

Recruitable units' sprites are finished, I've yet to draw a few summons (neandertals & Cave Bear) and to mod a few more things before releasing the mod...

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Thanks you all for your encouragements and your advices.

I have to finish the graphics of Cantabira's heroes (only one is currently done) and to mod them, plus one or two summons, and the mod will be read to be released ! I've added the new sprites on the general graphic view.

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

This looks great! I will definetly try it out. Love the summons. Needs a god though. When I can think better I might be able to make specific suggestions (medical reasons, resolved soon hopefully).

As for balance, let me put in my (didnt we expect this) comment.
If you want to, feel free to go unbalanced and shoot for a good AI nation. I would have just as much fun coming up against this nation as I would have playing it. Maybe even more so if it was designed to be effective as an AI. Just a thought.

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

A few new things in Cantabira:

- New summon (First ones, sorts of neandertals).
- three new heroes (Eldest of Elders, Forever king and Undying).
- some corrections of typos in descriptions.
- two new pretenders.

Sorry for having been so long, and don't worry if Cantabira take a bit of time before being released, but I'm currently... hmm sort of modding something else. It's called "My Couple LA", and it takes place in Late Era, you know, this age when all things are going on the road to ruin & all that was once great, strong & beautiful is becoming sad remnants of a former glory... :o

Well, I still don't know, but it may (or may not) lead me to mod something I should call "My Divorce EA", with the utmost dreadful and unspeakable Doom Horror known as the Attorney :p ... Hope not, we'll see (and if somebody has the fortune teller ability, please I have bad events to prevent :D).

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

That sucks, Nounours--as a person who's been through quite a run of failed relationships in my past, you definitely have my sympathies.

As far as the graphics go, you do beautiful work-some of the very best I've seen, actually, especially considering that you haven't been making mods very long.

I was wondering if that big T-Rex skeleton *was* infact supposed to be a Pretender chassis? I don't see information on him, otherwise...

Other than that, I'd like to suggest a Pretender chassis that I was/am going to use for Cimmeria: The "Bear-Skull Totem". It's basically just a big mound of paleolithic Cave-bear skulls, representing the very early (hypothetized, anyway) worship of cave bear bones by Neanderthals. I haven't done the graphics on it yet, or really defined it entirely, but, broadly, it will be a fragile, immobile unit, that's relatively easy to physically destroy (much easier than a Sphinx or a Monolith), but that protects itself by summoning, in combat, the spirits of cave bears.

Bear Skull Totem
Hp. 20iz. 4 Str. 2 Att. 12 Def. 8 Prot. 8 (8)
Mor. 30 MR. 18 Mv. Immobile Prec. 12 Weapons: None
Armour: None. Fear (0)
Earth 1, Nature 1, Death 1. 125 for new paths. Cost: 200. Dom. 2.
Produces: Bear Spirit (combat only).
Hp. 44 Siz. 4 Str 24 Att. 14 Def. 9 Prot. 0 (0) Mor. 30 MR. 9 Mv. 14/2 Prec. 5. Weapons: Claw. Berserk (6) Cold Res. 75%. Darkvision (50). Magic Being. Etherial. Animal.

A skeletal titan-chassis with a human/giant body and a mammoth skull head might be fun too.

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Yea relationship can suck big time. But on a happier note I love the way this mod is looking!! keep it up. I have an idea if it helps. Maybe you could make a raptor the summon skeleton and the t-rex skeleton a pretender.

Nounours November 11th, 2008 06:42 AM

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

In fact, the T-Rex is a summon. I'va planned a raptor version of the summon, but the sprite sucks, so...

As for the pretenders, they will be more "bronze-age" like than prehistorical... They will be gods of growth and fertility, this kind of stuff. I have also planned a Divine King, it's to say a sacrificed former Sacred King... I also have a fire pretender, a sort of huge fire spirit or elemental... Hope you will see them soon :D!

One great way to do skeletal dinosaurs of almost any type is just to research photos or pictures of their skeletons online, and then modify them into Dom3 sprites--not that difficult! There are literally *thousands* of these online, often in multiple poses. I could probably churn out a reasonable picture of a raptor in 4 hours or less, using this method.

It's how I basicly do all my sprites so I'll have to agree there, the 2nd sprite usually is harder since you'll have to change stuff yourself and it just doesn't look as good as the original (when I do it at least)

The only thing is that bones for you skeletal raptor (small fragile stuff) might get mashed when you need a relative small sprite and resize the image (size 3 I'm guessing so about 64x64 would be the size to use but probably the creature would have to be a bit smaller).

Anyway I'd really try it that way, if you don't succeed I would be willing to try and steal on of the net for you :D

Yeah, it was my main problem. Furthermore, I was busy doing other stuff (sprites for heroes, mainly), and lately I lack... concentration :D ... So, I will wait a bit before trying it again.

Indeed, much like the tibet one it really does look superb!

Woe is Cantabira! So close and yet so far.

It's a shame he never put up the attack sprites, or I'd do the mod for him.

This looks awesome! I cringe my dribblers to you! When can I download! Why am I yelling! I don't know!

Seriously though, I can't wait to play them.

Holy bad posters, Batman! I didn't notice this was a dead thread! And I still seem to be yelling!

Re: New Nation : Cantabira, Land of Standing Stones

Well, I'm back...

A few things have gone awry in my life, in the past two years, but I somehow managed to get through this, and I am back to work on my mods.

Actually, I'm working mainly on Cantabira, but also doing and testing a few changes to Shangri La & Shambalha (=EA Shangri La).

Thanks to Pyg and Globu for having cast "Revive Mod" (I will send you back your Death gems, folks ;)), and I have to give a look at the changes they have made. I don't know if I will keep it all, but their work is worthy of all my attention (and all my thanks for correcting my many mistakes & typos :D !), so I don't want to rush things...

So, Cantabira will probably go first, then Shangri La (both EA & MA, La will wait a bit). I'm also working on another mod, about cannibals, jungles, headhunters and dark magics, with inspirations mainly from Malay, Indonesian & Filipino myths, as well as R.E. Howard, L. Sprague de Camp or H.P. Lovecraft.

I actually have done something in that line you might be intrested in. I had a early version of UWGIM with EA R'lyeh having that kind of coastal recruits. I dropped them out in a recent update, so their sprites are currently unused. If you want them, you can have them. You can see some of them in the middle of this image.

You can get the .tga's by downloading the UWGIM mod, they are still in the graphic folder of that mod (called OEM).

Hey Nounours,

I've just dug this thread up again as I was *really* looking forward to its release. Do you have anything you can give us? Even if it's not quite finished it would be great to be able to have a go with it, and if you've lost interest then maybe Sombre or Globu or I could do the last little bits if you tell us what needs doing - looks like it's virtually finished anyway!

Hope you're still around cos I'd love to have a go with this. :)
