Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

That`s too bad, but I know only three russian Dominions players - and they play Dominions because I give them CD. It was too far and they now in another city...so I can`t play MP :(
Anybody know russian Dom III players? If yes - plz, let them know about me
Admin: don`t delete this thread just about a week, please

Well, last year I lived in Moscow, Idaho...but that won't help you much.

But may I recommend the PBEM or Server MP games hosted by players like llamabeast? (http://www.llamaserver.net/)

Dom3 is the only game I have ever played MP online, and it's a blast. Prepare to get your backside handed to you repeatedly and trash-talked to aplenty by some very smart people.

Just look around in the Multiplayer/AAR forum, games open pretty frequently. I also hear you can find games on the IRC channel, but IRC is still a gentle mystery to me.

Re: Like-Offtopic: Moscow (or just Russia)

Wrana is russian. There are game forums with russian players in them where Dominions 3 threads/subforums are, too. I assume that you know a couple of those forums yourself, or at least the big one I'm thinking about. It could be that there are pirates among them so they might suffer from the copy protection when MP gaming, so in your own interest you should make sure that they have acquired a legal copy of the game first unless you want stalers later.

hey tifone!

i've always said eastern european women are my fave! i live in the states, but in this college town there are quite a few of them, especially among the grad students.

occasionally I am able to attend their parties. Eastern Europeans, Mediterraneans, and what I would very grossly and politically incorrect call "Orients" (as in "Orientalism", Near East, Sinai Peninsula, and India, not Far East) all tend to hang together; perhaps draw together by a common experience of Orientalism in the West.

Their parties are the best ever, their women the funnest and most gorgeous. From Bulgaria to Bangladesh, I love them all.

Tichy, I played some PBEM Dom II and III games - that`s good but not best. Too long for 300+ provs 3 vs 3 (AI vs Players) game. I dislike short games and rush
Ich, I know only one forum - ag.ru - and it`s very bad forum. Lots of kidz, trolls, /b/tards and ugly stupid moderators. Also last post about Dom III dated march-08

Sinai Peninsula? That's west of Israel, which is still Mediterranean. (notice the "location:" part next to my username :P)
I also agree with the whole eastern European women thing. A significant portion of Israel's population is eastern European in origin :)

I can't imagine how you were looking, but the Dom3 thread at agfc has been updating every day for several years, the last post was today, and new games are starting regularly (:

I haven't seen even single «kid, troll, /b/tard or ugly stupid moderator» there — Dominions is not their type of game. Btw, several members of that community have multiple HoF records here (at the official community), and others perform not bad as well.

As for your game preferences, I doubt anyone would like to play vs AI. People enjoy PvP, you won't ever get such gaming experience from playing vs AI.

No, some really do. It has something to do with the distinction between casual/hardcore gamer. Though those terms don't really describe things adequately - one aspect of the division is that some people like the head-to-head competition, and the excitement of battling another human..... and other people just like to achieve things for themselves, and have fun gaming.

One great advantage of a SP game is that you can play it whenever you have the time. I'm in two MP games now and on a busy day it is a bit hard to take the time to play the turns. On the other hand when I've got time I don't want to wait 24h for the next turn.

Edratman October 17th, 2008 07:48 AM

Re: Like-Offtopic: Moscow (or just Russia)

I would guess that SP players outnumber MP by a ratio of at least 50 to one. This forum is dominated by MP players, but I think that is a false representation of the true makeup of the number of players.

I would be shocked if someone at Shrapnel didn't have a reliable estimate of the SP/MP ratio (along wih a host of other player related data) accessible within seconds.

Re: Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

Actually Solo players seem to be the majority.
The sales on the game are incredible. The games sold do seem to get played. The MP players tend to register in order to get into games. Soloists tend to lurk more just to get answers or download files, then leave. But if you look at any time at the statistics on the forum, there are 2 or 3 unregistered viewers at any time for each registered viewer.

Personally I still continue to enjoy solo play over mp play even after all these years (since mid 2001).

I used to be an SP player and enjoyed it a lot, but must say even if it takes a lot of time to finish a game and can be frustrating at times, MP is all another thing... way more fun, expecially if you find good roleplayers. :) I used to ignore the lack of possible communication is SP with all those nations very different in mindset, traditions etc., but now I can't live without an Abysia threating me to burn my lands to ashes, noble Ermorians offering solemn treaties, pretentious Northners searching partners for advantageous deals.

That calculation is a little too naive for my taste, assessing sold copies of the game as a direct value for the amount of SP game players. I wouldn't believe that even a game as longtime fascinating as Dom3 manages to get all the people to continue playing it continuously in single player instead of putting it to the shelf where all the other games tend to go after some time, too. It probably takes a special people to not grow bored over winning against the random and simple-minded AI for the nth time. The biggest appeal in starting a new game, to me, would be newly added content, a new nation, or to try out a new strategy in a MP game.

As for not-logged in visitors, it's no secret that a lot of them are probably robots - either spam bots, or indexing bots for search engines. There prolly is a fair share of lurkers as well, but I'd expect that there are people who don't log in unless they want to actually write a reply to some post, too. I know that I browse my favorite forums as an anonymous user without being logged in sometimes multiple times a day, but I only log in write once every week or second week.

Re: Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

I'm a mostly "solo" SP player. One of the things that puts me off of MP games is that it's too easy-atleast for me-to miss turns, even if they're set for 48 hours between turns. Another consideration is that SP is oftentimes more fun than MP. Yes, MP is social, but it's also highly competitive, which for me, sucks the fun out of the complexity and richness of the game, since there aren't that many "killer strategies" per Nation.

Gandalf Parker October 28th, 2008 07:03 PM

Re: Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

Even a game as great as this one doesnt survive for this long on its own. It does take game variations, new maps, and mods to keep it lively. As far as I can tell thats the same for both the Solo or the MP players. :)

And by the way, most of the bots actually identify themselves as bots. And watching the activity screen tends to show the searching/lurkers fairly clearly. Even with the full-time registered campers on here the in-and-out search for answer lurkers tend to outnumber us 2-to1

Sure, but you can already see a lot of flux in the MP gaming crowd - over a timespan of one year and up, of course. Dom3 aside, most games I play have a range of about two weeks to two months before I find something new instead.

Those from the five or ten biggest search engines and their known IP ranges, maybe. There are lots and lots of spiders out there, from search engines you might have never heard about before like Baidu or projects like Archive.org. And I'd expect that the spambots and worms probing for security holes even outnumber the search engine bots by a good factor at any given time.

I expect that we got a couple of lurkers here that look up game information especially from those other gaming forums that play their own MP games without ever registering to the Shrapnel forums. I started like that, too.

Re: Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

So far I think I prefer sp, honestly. Intelligent opponents are nice, but turns are too slow. I'm used to sitting down with a game and playing for several hours and trying to play whenever everyone else finishes their turns is very strange to me. I've also not got the greatest memory in the world, so long periods of time not looking at what I'm doing tend to make me completely forget what my strategy was.

I'm also not honestly a very competitive person, which just goes to show how much sense I have playing a game like dominions.

Then Dom SP is perfect for you. I might also suggest Galactic Civilations.

Re: Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

I tried the demo for galactic civiliations 2 at one point. Unfortunately if I recall said demo was quite limited. It reminded me of Space Empires IV, but with less customization. Actually the demo for SEIV is how I came to find Dominions.

Well you're doing quite well in the warhammerama game. Sorry to hear it's a bit slow for you though.

rdonj October 29th, 2008 12:22 PM

Re: Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

Hehe, thanks sombre :) It's not boring or anything, I'm enjoying my little quest to somehow manage to wipe you out. You're proving to be a pretty frustrating opponent, I was convinced the ogres would be my easiest nation to fight but you seem to have a bit better handle on them than my practice opponent did. I actually am a bit burnt out on sp at the moment, I played like mad for a week before we started warhammerama and had been playing several large games already around that time. So in any case I'm enjoying the mp bit more than I am sp right now, it's just easier for me to enjoy sp because I have too much free time.

And hey, I'm in for the next warhammer themed game too. Next time I'd like to try one of your nations. Hopefully the greenskins will be out by then. This one could last a while if llama doesn't domkill me.

Sombre October 29th, 2008 12:32 PM

Re: Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

Haha, thanks. I've had more practice with Ogres than anyone I guess, but I've still made some bad mistakes. I should have gone for a rainbow sage pretender, I just find it a little boring. You're right that they don't match up well against tomb kings, especially with that bless you have, and in fact a lot of matchups will present them problems. That's why they're getting something of an upgrade soon.

I think the next warhammer game is likely to have the same 4 nations still (with some upgrades and tweaks) because I'm sure I'll want to play another one right after this one.

But if I had to guess what the next nation to actually be completed would be,... to be honest it might well be Chaos Dwarfs. If I actually got off my butt and did some work on them, they could be completed very swiftly indeed, unlike Empire, though I could theoretically get them out as a beta in reasonable time.

I'm not sure where Okin is with the greenies though. He might have secretly done loads and be able to release them soon.

rdonj October 29th, 2008 01:20 PM

Re: Looking for other players from Moscow or Russia

I certainly would have hated to be any other player in that game and have to fight you though. You have the power to take out the lizards and the survivability to allow the skavens to destroy their own army for you. If you had been fighting anyone else I think you'd be well on the way to winning right now. And I would probably be dead. As it is I seem just have the power to effectively stalemate you in a series of very bloody (well, on your end) and costly battles. I think I've made a good few mistakes too... hiring all those watchers being one of them, as I was completely bankrupt for a few turns until you destroyed my main army. I actually couldn't recruit commanders for ~3 turns. The paralyze darts are pretty nice but they keep getting wasted on your chafflings.

I have a feeling those new ogre summons of yours are going to be a real terror to face. It should be great, yet terrifying.

Chaos Dwarfs could be fun. I can't seem to find the thread though. Happen to have a link handy? It would be very nice to have another nation playable for the next game, with the current list it's almost too easy to get a winner as it is quite likely to be the nation that wins its first war. Anyway, here's to hoping.

Chaos Dwarfs don't have a thread because I haven't done a lick of work on them. It's just that I could probably whip up their nation the fastest, due to their low number of units. They're a favourite of mine too.

Empire has a thread and there are a few sprites on display there, but they're quite a way from being at beta stage, let alone finished. So although I've done no work on the chaos dwarfs at all, they're closer than the empire ;]

I'm afraid that lch, blockhead though he be, is right about this one. I've got the black orc sprites pretty much under wraps (It was quite tricky!), but I've been quite busy with studies for a change. I'll try to get a graphic or two done next week, and start keeping to a steadier schedule.
