Asia Twist (Wraparound) - UPDATED 11/22/08

1 Attachment(s)
Hello!

This is a wraparound map that twists around the geographies of Asia and Scandinavia. Some things are moved around. Some are missing. There are 304 provinces (267 land and 37 sea).

There are 19 optional preset starting positions (16 land, 3 water) that are randomly assigned. Each is marked with a colorful orb. Most starting positions are 3 provinces away from at least one other. Provinces with rivers or by lakes have fresh water. Small provinces are marked with a tan triangle. Large provinces are marked with a purple triangle. Ports are marked with a red star, with sea lanes marked with chains of blue stars. There are no preset sites except for a few mines placed to help balance the various starting positions.

*** This is an updated version of the map that replaces the previous version as of Nov. 22, 2008. It is Version 1.2. ***

The map was too big to post on the forum. So, you can download it here (download BOTH the .map and .rgb files): http://www.mediafire.com/file/12jekd3hzgz/AsiaTwist.zip

A thumbnail of the map is attached to this post.

Please let me know if you find any errors.

Thanks.

Pasha

Well, it certainly looks pretty! Will try it out. :)

That's a very nice-looking map. I'm thoroughly grateful for the effort you've put into it.

Thank you. It was fun to make, and I'm looking forward to starting a game on it soon. :)

Now I regret being signed up to so many games at the mo :(

Just to be picky for a moment, the links http://www.mediafire.com/?xglgdylzzyy and http://www.mediafire.com/?mocylhkwtyg might be better ones to put in the top post. It took me a little while to work out how to download the map from your link.

Looks awesome! :)

Hmm this looks like a great map, I'll try it a bit.. might replace Bering as my favorite map since it's a bit bigger.. must say I can't recognize scandinavia much but that don't bother me :D

PashaDawg November 2nd, 2008 09:15 PM

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

Scandinavia is north of Japan in the map. It's easier to see in wraparound-vision. :)

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

I don't like your mountains Pasha. Sorry, but they are just too brown and white for me. The combo hurts my eyes. I think more grayscale for the mountains would be much easier on the eyes.

Other than that, it's a very nice looking map.

Hi Lingchih:

Geez! They hurt your eyes? I am satisfied with the way they look, but in matters of taste there is no dispute. :)

OK, I am sorry to have to come right out and say it, but they look like turds. Giant, long turds.

Sorry.

Hey, did I mention thanks for hosting RAND #2. Great game.

I don't think the mountains in this map are especially beautiful, but they aren't that ugly either. They look as if they're all hollow inside, just waiting for Agartha to conquer them. I don't think they're actual caves, though.

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

Hi Endo:

There are several purple-ish cave provinces in the mountains that are connected as a chain. Is that what you mean? Or, do the entire mountain ranges look hallow?

Pasha

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

Yes to both. The brown lines look like tunnels connecting the caves, so I thought the mountains might be hollow.

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

to me it looks like mountains viewed from the top...

I think the current style of mountains looks great, I agree with Aezeal on this one. Did you see the Dawg Bones (sp?) map? That's..... turd mountains. :P

Brilliant map once again Pasha, thanks for sharing these with us! :D

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

Nice one!

About scandinavia: it's more Sweden than scandinavia! (EDIT: OK it is a bit of denmark and Finland as well).
Anyone who didn't recognize Sweden is hereby commanded to quit all current games and start a new one on this map. In the south we have the county of Skåne, with Malmö as largest city, where I live. Further to the north lies the lake Vänern, Swedens biggest lake. On the northern side of Vänern lies Karlstad, where I grew up. East of Karlstad and Vänern by the coast of Östersjön (Baltic Sea) lies Stockholm, capital of Sweden.

Once you have absorbed this you can have a license to play dominions again!

/me is keeping the fingers crossed, that now Pashadawg steps forward and admits that he really just modeled the map after a gigantic turd.

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

Are you guys serious, or is all of this just some strange inside-joke I don't get?

I didn't think I'd ever see any map, or part of a map, compared to feces in these forums.

On lighter note: Kristoffer's post rocks! I especially love how he gave "nationalism" as the reason for the edited of his post.

Thanks a ton Pasha!

I'm really enjoying this map in SP (while the llamaserver is dead). Especially the caves, there aren't a lot of maps with caves so it's cool to have a chance to play them.

Zeldor November 5th, 2008 04:08 PM

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

Too bad caves are not working.

PashaDawg November 5th, 2008 07:58 PM

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

Yes. I like to use a chain of caves as an alternative way to travel around the map... perhaps as a way to surprise an enemy.

Disclaimer: no turds were exploited in the making of this map.

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound)

Hi:

I have noticed that the .map file has been downloaded more times than the .rgb file. Both files are necessary to play with the map.

The .rgb file is the graphic image of the map. The .map file is a text file that informs the game of the location of provinces, names of provinces, neighbor connections, etc.

(Maybe some folks just wanted extra copies of the .map file, or maybe spider bots are downloading only the first file. :D )

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound) - UPDATED 11/22/08

Hello:

I updated the map today to add sea ports and to fix a few things. The link is available in the first post of the thread. I suppose this should be called version 1.2. :)

Thanks.

Great news ! Thanks for the work, Pasha. :p

I don't find your map on the llamaserver list but I'd like to launch a new llamahosted MP with your last version. Am I missing something ?

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound) - UPDATED 11/22/08

Thank you, Herode.

I don't know if Llama has added the map to his list. I will ask him.

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound) - UPDATED 11/22/08

Added to the LlamaServer.

As a matter of fact, anyone can do this. There is an option just underneath the map browser on the LlamaServer. However, I have a sneaky suspicion it doesn't work under windows (I use linux). I really should boot into windows and test it some time.

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound) - UPDATED 11/22/08

Thanks llama ! :)

BTW, I tried with no success to upload the map under Windows (Vista...) + Firefox. Maybe the .rgb file is too big ?
I have an Ubuntu boot but I seldom use it, I didn't try in this environment...

Re: Asia Twist (Wraparound) - UPDATED 11/22/08

Okay yeah, the error you got was really strange, but then again not having tested it under windows (or especially under Vista, which I don't have), I guess I can't say much about it!

What's the total province count on this map?

Dur. I didn't realize you could see it in the map list for starting a game. Still would be nice to have the info on the front post.

Hi Jazzepi:

I will add that. It is 267 land and 37 sea (304 total).
