MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Running

Well, I've officially gotten bored with sending my armies of doubly-wish-empowered-gorgon/tartarian-SCs or massive-squads-of-arcane-doom or unending-tides-of-sacred-murderers out to obliterate the Impossible AIs, so I'm hoping to start losing horribly in MP for a while instead. I haven't played a single MP game yet, so I'm looking for similar players that want to get a feel for MP and don't mind screwing up royally to do it.

A word on players: I'm sort of champing at the bit to get things going, so for the moment, players that have expressed an interest but not chosen a nation are still just provsionally accepted, but if somebody else with a firm decision comes along I'll accept them in place of an undecided player.

Game details:
Era: Middle Ages
Map: Glory of the Gods Multiplayer (the 227 land version)
Host: LlamaServer, 24h quickhost
Players: 10
Mods: I'll take the CBM under advisement, depending on player opinions, but probably none.
Settings: Completely default

A word on Diplomacy:
I strongly favour diplomacy being 'flexible'. Half the fun of diplomacy is roleplaying and conniving, regardless of the game you play. However, if people are happier with diplomacy being inviolable then I'll go along with that.

Nations:

Aristander - Ermor
Denisius - Pangea
Fakeymcfake - Shinuyama
Heinrich - Ulm
Lokean - R'lyeh
Natit - Agartha
Shikome - Marignon
SteelyDan - Arcosephales
Zapmeister - Vanaheim

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting

I've played a few MP games, the only time I've not been one of the first to die was when I was in the water. Do I qualify?

Lokean November 10th, 2008 07:04 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting

I suppose so, since you claim to die horribly... ;)

What nation?

Shikome November 11th, 2008 02:33 AM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting

I'll take Marignon if you'll have me, I'm definitely a newbie, Not played a single MP game yet. (Though I have signed up to one that's starting soon so I'll have a few rounds experience by the time we start probably, I'm sure that isn't enough to stop me sucking though ;) )

Zapmeister November 11th, 2008 03:02 AM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting

I've never played MP in Dom3, but I did play a fair bit of Dom2. Do I qualify? (Oh yeah - I've never followed the "how to play X" guides and therefore rarely win).

Atlantis for me please!

Please count me in as Ulm.

I would like to join. I will choose the nation a bit later.

Denisius November 11th, 2008 11:47 AM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting

I'll take up Pangea.

Lokean November 11th, 2008 11:49 AM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting

You're all provisionally accepted, but I'll want nations from those who haven't chosen; if I get other requests from people with a firm decision I'll take them first.

I fear two water nations in one big ocean is going to lead to either an alliance and subjugation of the mouth-breathers on land, or a hellsih war of attrition under the seas. Either way, it'll be interesting.

Carpetbagger, how do your giant rebellious sea-toads feel about brain-raping sociopaths from beyond space and time?

Fakeymcfake November 11th, 2008 12:56 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting (provisionally)

If you're still taking people I'll join with Shinuyama.

Lokean November 11th, 2008 01:01 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting (provisionally)

Sorry, Juffo, but since you were the last of the undecided, and you're applying to another newbie game as well, I'm going to take Fakeymcfake over you.

Lokean November 11th, 2008 07:06 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Recruiting (provisionally)

Okay, I've been looking at the game map I suggested, and it can't really support two water nations with just six land nations. As such, I'm going to suggest going up to ten players and using the Glory of the Gods Multiplayer map. That gives a more even balance of land to water, with each land nation having about 28 regions and each water nation having about 23.

As such, Juffos, you're back in the lineup

I am willing to be the 10th. I would like Ermor.
Thanks

MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

Right, recruitment complete. I'm afraid Loren lost out to Natit.

Final roster is as follows:

Aristander - Ermor
Carpetbagger - Atlantis
Denisius - Pangea
Fakeymcfake - Shinuyama
Heinrich - Ulm
Lokean - R'lyeh
Natit - Agartha
Shikome - Marignon
SteelyDan - Arcosephales
Zapmeister - Vanaheim

As I say, I'm not too concerned about the Conceptual Balance Mod, as I've not been playing with it in SP, but if the majority prefer it I'll set the game up to use it.

Aristander November 12th, 2008 11:26 AM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

I vote no the the CBM. I have nothing against CBM but would just like to keep things simple.:)
Thanks
Aristander

Fakeymcfake November 12th, 2008 03:42 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

I'd prefer the CBM as the few multiplayer games I've played with it have been much more enjoyable due to everything being a bit more balanced out. However, I'm willing to go either way on this one.

Lokean November 12th, 2008 05:18 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

Looking through the CBM I notice a couple of things that might actually be the decider on whether we choose to use it or not. Most of the national summons are made cheaper, especially for Shinuyama, and the Carrion Woods are available to Pangea from the start.

On the other hand, the traditional scales used to pay for a massive bless are made more detrimental to have as negatives.

I'm still undecided, but leaning more towards using it, simply because it seems to be popular with MP games organised from here, so getting used to it is probably sensible.

Zapmeister November 12th, 2008 05:32 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

Although I have little experience with the mod (or Dom3, for that matter) I'm a big fan of balance. If it's popular, then that's an indication that its stated aim of improving balance is achieved and that in itself is good enough reason to use it IMHO.

Shikome November 12th, 2008 05:50 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

I'd vote for CBM, most my SP experience is with it and it does seem to make a lot of stuff that's otherwise pretty useless less so, which is always good in my opinion

Plus it contains worthy heroes which is a nice mod in itself, adding quite a lot of new heroes to many nations.

Lokean November 12th, 2008 06:10 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

Fair enough, I suppose I'm sold on it then...

Pretenders can be mailed in now, I've set up the mod, so you'll have to download it and flag it in your preferences before you make the pretender.

I am going to bailout of this game cause i have a short term memory thing and playing would mess up all my other MP. Its sad to take R'lyeh off my hook.

Do people have a problem with continuing as-is? If not, same thing stands, please mail your pretenders to the llamaserver.

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

Still waiting on the following:

Aristander - Ermor
Denisius - Pangea
Heinrich - Ulm
Natit - Agartha
SteelyDan - Arcosephales

And just to verify, while I hope to see plenty of diplomacy I'm assuming it's not going to be treated as inviolable game mechanics but as actual diplomacy and the fostering of relationships between nations.

Eh, that's how I always play the game, part army building empire managing, part alliance making back stab dealing.

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

Well, since I'm now the only underwater nation, I'm going to make things perfectly clear...

The seas belong to The Dreaming Eye, who waits at the heart of the fallen star until the time is right to rise, when he will consume the minds of the lesser beings and the faithful alike. He is ancient, implacable, and throws an unbelievable hissy fit if strangers get in the water with him. Seriously, don't try it, or we'll have to spend the next millenium subjugating entire island communities to provide enough chocolate to cheer the whiny little baby up. Please, stay out of the water, if not for us, then will you at least think of the squidlings!

SteelyDan November 14th, 2008 04:43 AM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

To: The Dreaming Eye
From: The Pondering Gaze
Subject: Water

Dear Eye,

Our elephants have expressed a wish to bathe in your water and drink of its watery watery goodness. In exchange we offer a golden chariot filled to the brim with good intentions, and a lifetime supply of peanuts. Do the deep ones eat peanuts? Do the deep ones know what a peanut is? Please advise.

Also, it seems appropriate that now that the seas and oceans have been claimed to stake our claim as well, and since there are a limited number of terrains to claim, the Pondering Gaze has decided to quite simply and humbly stake its claim on the "Land". All other nations inhabiting the "Land" will of course be given appropriate notice for when they will be required to leave the "Land". This notice is henceforth given. Any other nations that wish to make claims for the "Air", or if they so wish, the "heav'n abuve" (sic) are free to do so now.

Please keep off the grass.

Sincerely,

P.G.

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

Agne, Chosen of Odus, Beloved of the Valkyrie frowned as he re-read the intercepted missive for the fourth time. Interruptions were forbidden during bathtime, but this clearly couldn't wait, no matter the cost. Agne rose, paused briefly to reconsider the consequences, then resolutely strode across the courtyard in the direction of the personal baths of his master.

"How DARE you intrude!" bellowed the would-be god as he lounged in the huge bath which was, of course, frozen solid. His sacred horned helmet, worn only by the divine personage at bathtime and by the valkyrie while performing opera, sat askew upon his head giving him the appearance of a dolt. Ironic, thought Agne.

"Forgive me, Your Superness, but the icehawks have intercepted a message sent from one ..." Agnes consulted the paper, "... Trerachadh of Arcosephale to someone or something called The Dreaming Eye. It seems that, between them, they've claimed the land and seas of our world".

"Trerachadh? What kind of name is that? Are you telling me that there are other nations? How does that affect the Ascension Project business plan?" His helmet fell off - Odus was clearly upset.

"Trerachadh is Hdahcarert spelled backwards, my Lord, and it means you might not get to be a god."

Agne backed out of the bathroom as surreptitiously as he could, taking advantage of the loss of perception that occurred during a semidivine tantrum. He could see much more plainly than his master that their future did not necessarily hold the pleasures due to those that impose uncontested dominion, and that a retirement spent enjoying those pleasures would not be his as soon as he thought. If at all.

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

Sorry to do this to you, Zapmeister, but I have to unstart the game for the moment. Septimius Severus mailed in a Pretender and the game auto-started. Since I've heard nothing either way from Denisius yet I consider that an unacceptable breach of trust and would prefer to give him time to make his position known.

Lokean November 14th, 2008 01:09 PM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Pre-Game Discussion

I don't know how much of a delay people are willing to tolerate, but it is my intent to wait until 12:00 GMT on saturday, and start the game then. That gives Denisius 56 hours from the time the game went up, which should be plenty of time since the game was stated to be hosting every 24h.

From the Press Office of Isabelle, God Queen of Marignon, Councilor of the Gods, Queen of Wind upon the Waters, Baker of Pies:

The Holy Marignon Empire regrets to inform the unenlightened barbarians (everyone currently not claiming to be a Marignon Citizen) that they are as of yet unable to bask in the divine presence of The One True Goddess (She's still doing her hair), however her right hand man, Urbuthre, has released the following statement with regards to the Land/Water Ownership issue:

"No they're ours"

Dear Urethra, or whatever...

Your request has been received by the equally large bureaucracy of the Pondering Gaze. Please allow four to six thousand years for processing, after which it will be deliberated in the senate. After which we will consider your request.

Most cordially,

The times are changing. Mysterious signs portend the coming of the new age and a new goddess. The skies grow darker. Mysterious fogs and unseasonable weather promote unusual growth throughout the land. A prophet has been preaching about the divinely inspired revelations he has received. It seems that all those who wish to follow the teachings of Vesta, princess of witchcraft, goddess of fishermen, will receive life after death.
Who can say what miracles, hero's and other wonders await!

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Running

Hmm, for some reason, I thought we were on a 48 hour schedule between turns, but apparently I was wrong. How long before we switch? I will likely need more time between turns due to my busy schedule. I motion for a 48 hour turn schedule ASAP, otherwise I likely won't be able to keep up. Feel free to kick me, though, should this happen.

I for one have no problem with accommodating Septimus Severus on the 48 hour schedule.

It's a bit soon to switch to 48 hours in my opinion. Especially considering that turns at this point take about 5 minutes to complete, if even.

Lokean November 18th, 2008 11:23 AM

Re: MA Newbie game - Faltering_Steps - Running

Considering Agartha has staled his first two turns, I'd be loathe to lose a second player so I'm happy to bump up to 48h quickhost for the sake of Septimius Severus.

Whoever's starting closest to Agartha has just been given a free E5 gem site, however...
