I don't think that "all else failed" on the Dominions series. It has pulled in quite a crowd of people by hearsay from other gaming forums alone, and continues to do so. The sex appeal ads apparently get the highest click-through rates according to Shrapnel, that's why they are still there. Like Edi pointed out, you're late to the party.

Actually, I'm going to object to the add a little bit:

Why in the world is the 3 on it? She should simply be saying "I want my Dominions". I don't really think there are going to be many Dom 1 or 2 players out there who don't know there's a version 3 out and yet would be interested in buying it.

I'm pretty much against the ads as their message doesn't correspond with what they point at. That is, for me, a pretty low way of tricking the potential consumer.

I haven't gone quite that far (I will still buy Illwinter's next project if it catches my fancy) but it's a definite turnoff. It does dampen my desire to point people toward Shrapnel games.

Where do these ads even show up though?

Are they local to the Shrapnel site? If that's the case then I find it difficult to imagine that anyone stumbled on sharpnel looking for porn.

Otherwise, it's a game site, people are here likely because they are interested in one of the their products, and once here shrapnel is trying to get them to click to as many different games as possible I imagine.

I dunno, the ads don't bother me in the least. Nor do they arouse me for that matter, but ymmv...

I for one appreciate the incorporation of maenads, succubi, oreiads and the like into advertisements. Also, I'm really not sure how these things are worse than any other advertisement that uses sex (read- most do). Or how using it in an advertisement is wrong somehow. It isn't like it says that if you buy dominions, beautiful men/women will want to sleep with you. Honestly, I've seen worse in advertisements for personal hygeine products, food, and furniture.

Don't worry, I do ***** about those too! :) (Hello Herbal Essence?) I'd argue that the worst in ads actually happens in video games, and I shouldn't forget about the Photoshop mania in magazines... Still, knowing that there's worse elsewhere isn't much of an argument, is it?

licker: The ads do show up on the Shrapnel site and elsewhere, but they seem to be less prominent now. I've just seen a new ad when posting a reply (this one here, which seems a bit softer if you ask me... I still wouldn't bother finding out about the game if I knew nothing else about it.

I'm confused by some of the comments around here..... It's hard for me to see how someone who likes women would not find her attractive. Granted, doesn't look compatible with me and my strategy gaming lifestyle, but my body doesn't care about that, and neither does hers. :p

But, they should have done the responsible thing, and found a model to slap some thick-framed glasses and some sweats on, with no makeup. And then I could say, "awwww, I want to play Dominions 3 with HER!".


I dunno, just seems the demographics are a bit off on the current campaign - and I'm not entirely sure who the target audience of the ads actually is. They may get a lot of clicks, but are those people interested in Dominions at all? I'm not sure anyone has yet stated in Welcome! thread that they "followed the ad with the hot chick and ended up here", which I would think would be a better yardstick for success of the ad. ;)

Im sorry to say that the effectiveness of such ads is well proven. Even if they dont mention the product, they are memorable (as we see here). Even bad ads can be effective for being memorable (as proven on tv). And any click thru can increase sales (as shown by spam reports even when the spam sent does not mention the product).

Yes that sucks but I dont think that all of these different market moguls in many different media are all deluding themselves. Unfortuntely.

A fun game I play with TV ads is to figure out which of the seven deadly sins they are promoting in order to sell their snake oil. I agree that lust is very popular, but I don't think it's quite passed the 50% mark yet. Vanity, avarice and envy are also well represented.

I don't think the dominions sex ads are objectionable, just dumb. I doubt that the "clickthroughs" they generate lead to any sort of corresponding increase in sales for shrapnel. They are off the mark for the intended audience. Vfb's ad, otoh, is witty and self-deprecating. I'd buy that for a dollar!
