Inexplicable Horror Marking

Recently in my current game of Dominion 3, I had my Pretender and one of my heroes get inexplicably horror marked.

With my Pretender, he was horror marked the same turn he searched and found The Demon Gate. According to the database, the Demon Gate is not supposed to horror mark.

As for items, according to the database, the only items that are supposed to horror mark are the Lightless Lantern, the Tomb of High Power, and The Forbidden Light, and they did not have these.

My Pretender has not been involved in any battles. My Hero was involved in a battle right before he was horror marked, but I watched the battle carefully and the Hero was not horror marked at the end of the battle.

As a new player, I really want to understand this. Is dom3_db trustworthy with respect to horror marking? Is it possible that searching and finding the Demon Gate horror marked my Pretender? Is it possible that something else they are carrying like the Ankh or Robe of the Magi or Picus's Axe of Rulership or Procas's Axe of Rulership could horror mark them?

Thanks in advance for any insights you can offer!

Robe of the Magi is the culprit I believe. It has a slight chance of adding horror marks.

boots of the planes as well horror marks; probably some others that escape me. However, in this case the culprit is clearly the robe of the magi, which horror marks, as per its listing in the manual.

The flesh ward, dimensional rod, sceptre of corruption, mage bane, gift of kurgi, the ankh, the horror harmonica, lifelong protection, soul contracts, stone spheres, and boots of the planes should all cause horror marking as well. I could have missed something, I just went through the manual for all of these.

It does seem like this is an omission from the database. I suppose if Edi notices he will probably try to add it to the next version.

Post the Demon Gate/Horror mark on the Dominions Trivia thread. :)

The item section of the DB is the most unreliable one, but Robe of the Magi does give horror marks.

Slight? Nonono. Either I have just had bad luck, or our favorite Swedes sure do love to stretch the meaning of that word. :p

Or maybe it isn't related to the severity..... Because it seems to me that marks rack up pretty fast with the Robe of the Magi - just a slight chance of a severe horror marking.

I definitely should have looked in the manual. Robe of Magi is the culprit for my Pretender, and the Ankh is the culprit for my Hero. I will make a thorough list and email it to Edi to update his database.

The Demon Gate could also be a factor. I wonder if it is supposed to horror mark, even though the database does not include it?

Slight chance may be understated. I put both of those artifacts on their respective characters just two turns earlier, and they both got horror marked on exactly the same turn 2 turns later.

I don't remember which game, but in one of my recent sp games I had a lucky event early on that gave me a robe of the magi. Bearing in mind that it horror marks I only gave it to my mages when I needed the extra paths to forge/cast, taking it off the next turn. No horror marks so far.

There are sites that horror mark, but those mention it in their description.

EDIT: On second thought, I'm not sure if it was horror-marking or just some other annoying thing. I know some cause disease (Chillsick Swamp, Ink Pot End), and some others something different. Doom Cloud is the only one I remember right now, but I think it either curses or horror marks random units in the province it is in.

Re: Inexplicable Horror Marking

The items that leave horror marks are Mage Bane (96), Sceptre of Corruption (113), Robe of the Magi (173), Flesh Ward (187), Boots of the Planes (203), Soul Contract (227), Stone Sphere (241), Lifelong Protection (254), Lightless Lantern (256), Tome of High Power (276), The Forbidden Light (285), The Horror Harmonica (288), The Ankh (290), The Gift of Kurgi (296), Dimensional Rod (311).

I have shared what I know about the items with Edi and it might probably be in the next Dom3 DB release.

Yeah, it will be, once I get around to updating that. Been busy with other stuff.

BTW (super-OT) has anyone ever heard of the tv-series Garou? Well it isn't that great, there's a guy with an utterly ridiculous armour which goes around killing things, it has some nice martial arts actions when he doesn't wear the stupid armour and a couple of inspired characters but that's all.

Well in this series the bad guys are called Horrors and come from a different plane. Any human which comes in contact with their blood takes "the mark of the horrors" and becomes like a living lighthouse for them - the good guy's girl is touched by him and he uses her as a bait for the Horrors for half the series. The similarities end here, the horrors there are simple black demons, but wanted to know if someone knew about that :p
