Mod Artwork quality

1 Attachment(s)
EDIT: tossed a second one up.

Hey all.

I am in the process of making a High Elf mod inspired by Warhammer Fantasy. Problem is, I'm not too sure of my own artistic abilities.

So, here's a Spearelf I did by scrapping together a few parts (I'll cite those sources in the complete work, so no worries there) Would this be good enough, or should I head back to the spriteboards and study for a few more months?

I understand making a mod will be hard work, but I have most of the fluff written and conceptual ideas now. The only thing that remains now is balancing.

Regards,

Caradryan.

That's not bad at all. Works for me at least.

Yeah he's definitely a good first effort. Good on you for giving it a go! :]

Very nice. Clean lines, easy to see.
You even got the transparency (black) and shadow (magenta) correct which many people miss on the first try.
Im looking forward to seeing more.

Good enough for what purpose? It's good enough that there will be people who will use and enjoy your mod as long as the mod itself is good. At the same time, there are mods that I've wanted to try but turned off because the graphics quality--contrasted with the really-quite-attractive built-in Dom3 sprites--was too poor. This is just a first effort, but the bmp sprite above would fall into that category for me.

Some people will use your mod with any graphics. Some people will use your mod with these graphics. Some people won't ever use your mod at all no matter what graphics you give it. I hope that answers your question.

I see. I shall go back to work and make sure it'll be on par with Dominion's actual graphics or at least something acceptable then. Thank you for all of your input.:)

Re: Mod Artwork quality

You don't necessarily *have* to fix the graphics yet. You could also try releasing the mod as it is and taking feedback to tweak the balance and stuff, with the intention of upgrading the graphics at some point in the future if there's enough demand. Unless you *want* to do the graphics now because that's what you feel like doing.

If you want it to look at similiar as the dom3; You can copy/paste from the existing dom3 sprites. Then Hue-Saturation effect to change colors or use colorize option etc.

I use 32-bit tga instead, as I like to work on transparent background and then using a transparent dark color for unit shadow.

Ignore max, imho it's of the same quality as the sprites within the game, it's not as nice as some of the real artistic modders make them but IMHO certainly playable (but if you see my mods you'd know that since my quality is even lower.. but then again I play dominions only for strat reasons and just need to recognize what is what, and I can't make sprites in anycase)

When looking up close to the pic it seemed like the head was just a bit to much infront of the body. Maybe you should move the head back one pixel.

Agree with Aezeal on everything =)

Tifone, I think you have a great future ahead of you with that attitude.
I feel the same and my life is great overall.

PS if you don't my below average graphs, could you test dom 3K then, need more players :D

I think it looks pretty good Caradryan.

The only funny thing is that it's not clear how he's holding the shield. It moves forward in the attack sprite, but both hands seem to be on the spear.

PS I'm looking forward to seeing the mod! High elves should be fun.

Re: Mod Artwork quality

Originally it seemed a general request for comment from all players but since it has become slightly technical modder responses I have moved it to the modders forum.

Re: Mod Artwork quality

PS one of the better sprites in the dragons mod might make a nice dragon for the high elves. (all where nice pics found on the net, some converted better though the wave dragon is a pretty good looking blue dragon) That is if the dragon ends up being to hard to make, if you can do it yourself than that would ofcourse be great too.

Sombre January 17th, 2009 02:04 PM

Re: Mod Artwork quality

I hope he doesn't use any sprites from the dragon mod.

Aezeal January 17th, 2009 07:17 PM

Re: Mod Artwork quality

while the sprite might nog be original I think it is a very good nice looking sprite.

Well, I got some help with art major friends. Between grinding away at higher level math, attending biology and chemistry lectures, and taking care of basic human necessities, I've been spending MOST of my time on learning how to make better sprites.

I have attached a banner that I made with a small bit of help from friends. Please tell me if this quality would be more ...acceptable, for what we're looking at. I'm sorry to make it sound like I'm trying to draw attention to myself. Rest assured, I am not. I just want to make sure what I'm putting out is quality work so people can enjoy it better.

Very nice. It should look good scattered across the map.

Re: Mod Artwork quality

The flag is of good quality imho. :)

Sombre January 21st, 2009 05:23 AM

Re: Mod Artwork quality

It looks ok, a bit like a resize. I think the area at the top is too busy with the oraments and it detracts from the fact it's a flag. Personally I'd prefer a simpler, clearer flag. But it is definitely better than a lot of mod flags out there.

I think it looks great, a new master artist on the forum :D

Re: Mod Artwork quality

I think it looks really good! Nice work. It's quite different in style to the vanilla flags, but then so are most of the mod nations' flags.

Definitely looking forward to seeing more of your stuff Caradryan.
