New map coming soon!

Fulfilling the promise, building a new map. Small one (for me ;)) - 100x100 hexes. It covers area you may see here:
www.mapy.cz

It is ca. 18 km inland from one of major border crossings between late Czechoslovakia and late West Germany. Mountaineous terrain with lot of places inaccessible (or hardly so) for vehicles.Utilising the whole height level scale and then some - max. height is 160 (manual input). Height step 20 meters.

Started today, the work is fairly fast - mostly because there are few houses and so on ;) Here is 1st preview, so far have reached as low as Level 9. The top-left corner is one hill of height 160, in low-right corner there will be another. The terrain slopes down from left (south) to right (north) and total altitude step is from some 850 meters to 480 meters above sea level.
Roughly through the center of the map (top-down) there will be a canyon of a small stream (you can see its outline carved in Level 9 terrain already).
Hope you'll enjoy!

EDIT: as you may see, Level 9 is "bare" as of yet, with only roads placed.

Look forward to it your maps are top quality & often a bit diffrent
Where do you get your topography height data from?

Re: New map coming soon!

1:50k military topo maps (or touristic maps based on them). Scanning is sometimes a bit tricky, but then it's easy - I hexgrid the BMP and fire up the map editor :)

Preview no.2 here, hills completed, road and rail network completed. Now have to add all that coating like trees, houses etc. :)

To prove that I am still on the project, here's the result of my today's mapping hour: lower left corner of the map, incl. the deep valley. Was real fun and will make for a nice RPG alley ;)

Now one more question, would you like more maps from the same region? Was toying with the idea of creating a series of maps covering the path of Route E53 from this location up to the borders with Germany.

Just going to download now thanks. Will be a few days before I get round to playing but your idea sounds great. Think I saw a post somewhere by you saying not great at scenerio building but this would give the likes of people who are a good base for a campaign

I agree. I know who I need to go when I need maps for designing my next user campaign. ;)

Re: New map coming soon!

Got a "mapping mood" - begun to create a follow-on to this map to the North (continuing off the right side of the precvious map). A nice valley surrounded by hills, lot of villages and hamlets. Scanning this one was tricky as it was right on the map fold.

Just got round to your map & had to say  Damn your good
Another little masterpiece & you do a good job of not picking run of the mill terrain.
I can se this being another map that causes a few Oh Err moments like your last one as the LOS does not work out quite as I had expected it to.

New map to be expected by next weekend :)

This was about most complicate part of the map, lotsa villages and hamlets. Next comes the main valley, main road and railroad, then Eastern ridgeline, mostly trees.

What area is this new map covering? Is it to the West of your earlier map?

To the North, ie continuing off the right-hand edge of the previous map - route E53 goes roughly south-north so had to rotate the map 90°.

OK, cool. I'm mapping out scenario's for a possible Silver Lions II taking place in western Czechoslovakia using your maps and need to know the maps flow across the area. ;)

Thats fair enough may I suggest as they are covering the same area you release them all together as a pack. Also put orientation on as rotated the 2nd map a little North in a bottom corner.
From a user point of view the 2nd larger map has many more uses as for generated battles you cannot set the start line but you can just use part of the map to adjust it & make it more balanced for the meeting type you want. Means I can play on your maps more often which is a good thing.

Kinda hoping you two have a good little partnership going on here & look forward to more. Thanks in advance to both of you for your time & commitment giving the rest of us something fun to play with.

Its definitely working well at least for me.

Map making is the hard part for me so I frequently use the auto-generator to get the base map and then edit from there so it kinda looks good. This means the maps are not representative of any actual terrain and I usually just make up town names to flesh out the briefing texts. With Mareck's maps I can make a better story, with matching maps and more flowing terrain of actual areas the battles are being fought over.

Another map is already in works, this time you may look forward to a city :) And have to say that I enjoy the map-making much more if I know that they are to play role in a campaign :) So yes, it is working for me as well :)

Decided to tease y'all a little bit, so here is a preview of the map I am corrently working on. Eisenstein Pass, borders between Czech Republic (or, for SLII campaign, Czechoslovakia) and Germany (Bayern). Definitely tank-unfriendly country - relatively lots of roads on both sides of the border (marked by *) but inaccessible terrain... Mmm, few mines would cause fun, as well as few ambush parties with RPGs or Panzerfausts :)

Okay, so that map is ready. That means that just one or two maps for the SLII campaign remain to be done...Covering the entire height of a 1:50000 touristic map of the area :)

Preview of another map, that will be likely ready this evening. Just one more to go after that and the Silver Lions map pack will be complete! (Unless I decide to make few more "off-game" maps ;))

High Marek only ask because your maps are class but when you decide to do some more could we have some covering an area of Asia thats not all jungle say Korean border Vietnam or the like. Or a few maps of Russia we have lots of Europe but little to take the fight into Russia. Perhaps if doing a series following a rail line for supply purposses.

Just got round to taking Sederot 2008 out for a spin, you created a monster:D
Think this is the hardest map I have played judging LOS both of us have had moments launching attacks only to find the long range support thought you had failed to get on target. Really do have to think ahead on what fire oportunities you think areas might offer. Infantry rule & try any sweeping move at your peril its probably covered, good stuff if hard work.

Re: New map coming soon!

Just wait till I kick myself to Golans :) Got a bit of school stuff recently, but hopefully will get to some mapping soon, though do not know what specific area will be chosen. Thinking of Korea, i believe I have some maps. or maybe Georgia (have 1:100k mil maps). Or Slovakia, for WW2 mostly )have access to a complete 1:25k coverage)... So many places, so little time... :)

Imp June 18th, 2009 07:41 AM

Re: New map coming soon!

Look forward to when you get round to it, playing on your maps usually requires a bit more thought & looking ahead for where the routes taking you. Unless of course you are into driving over a lot of dodgy terrain, sometimes needs must.
Golans as a thought could you do 2 maps 1 summer then another with splashes of mud, could add myself of course. I like the idea of having some more cluttered maps than normal to choose from for opponents that the game tends to throw up as fairly open terrain most of the time. They all sound good & I would probably use Korea quite a lot as several participants in it.

Re: New map coming soon!

Was chuffed with my self as pulled off a solid strike, result I thought but my overwatch was looking the wrong way, feeling the pain & trying to figure out how he got there undetected. Keeping overwatch is a big problem as is guessing when to lift your skirts & make a dash for the next section of cover. The top part of the map is fairly straight forward but little fighting occured there, cresting a hill or trying to go round elsewhere though often unleashes a host of surprises. Fighting in the olive groves is vicious with infantry going hand to hand or catching you unawares, vehicles risk at great peril.
Loving it we are stalemated all thoughts of going for flags are gone just a pitched battle with the result hanging very much in the balance. At this rate we may end up going native on this one throwing rocks at the end because there wont be much left.
Enemy APCs may be quite basic but boy do they carry a lot of MGs, getting in range is very unhealthy Jordanian Commander of formation in tatters out.

If added to MBT update may want to correct hexes 64,31 & 77,38 both show paved road but are open.
You spent a lot of time making shallow streams (mainly fords) If was going to be picky a few stream hexes are mud or rough but as have a similar effect think its fine 67,139 & 54,31 are open ground though so possible look at.
Hope you do not mind error reporting a map of this detail bound to be a few glitches.

Yep, was initially a bit confused by 64,31, before checking the version of the map - on the "1980s" the bug is just on 77,38, in 2k8 variant it's on both places. fixed.

Found the first, but the second puts me onto nice open terrain that should be so ;)Please check it again, I think the coords are off.

Also found a freak stream on the "1980" variant, fixed it and once you give me the last coords again and I fix it, I will upload both here.

Of course I do not mind, on the contrary, I am glad somebody is paying close enough attention to the map :)

Re: New map coming soon!

Me bad lost a digit should have been
54,131 + new addition 71,151

Only notice as moving near with a gap in stream move radius makes it obvious as even a ford costs several MP.
More maps should have orchards on them, in woods you know you are going to bump heads unless trees are transparent giving 2 hex view or uneven ground which is predictable.
Orchards much harder to guess, can I see 2 or 3 hexes through it & getting a LOS into them from above can be a real help or pain in my case as he controls the hill top, smoke inbound.

Marek_Tucan June 22nd, 2009 10:23 AM

Re: New map coming soon!

Ah, found that these bugs in streams are pretty frequent, from now on you may stop reporting them, checking all streams :)

Imp June 22nd, 2009 12:14 PM

Re: New map coming soon!

Thats dedication, with future maps I would be happy to check & adjust obvious then return to you. Its easy with roads rail & stream for a hex to be missed & I would rather you put your time to making new maps than checking them.:)

Marek_Tucan June 23rd, 2009 01:09 AM

Re: New map coming soon!

Streams checked, if you encounter any furter bug (apart from streams) during your PBEM, please note them and then post themall when you're finished, I will then fix 'em and upload the corrected maps.
