Crash on turn generation

Hi,
I have just recently upgraded to version 321 and now dom crashes on every turn generation.
I tried downgrading(i.e installing the game again) to version 317, then to version 315, to 314 but the problem persists.

I´m running the game in windows xp with a GeForce FX 5500.

Re: Crash on turn generation

Do you get an error message with your crash? That might help pinpoint the problem.

Either way, I'd first suggest disabling any mods you have running, then trying again - perhaps one of those conflict with the new version, somehow?

If that isn't what's wrong, you can try re-entering your CD key, making sure you input it properly. (If you don't want to reinstall, you can delete or rename the file named 'key' in your dominions 3 folder to have the game prompt you to re-enter it on startup.)

It might be that you're having problems with mods that you activated. In any case, run the game in debug mode (check the FAQ) and look for hints why the game crashes, in case you don't normally see an error message.

No, the game just freezes(i guess i should have said that instead of crash), there isn´t an error message. I have to press CTRL+ALT+DEL to finish the process. And the status of dom in the task manager is "not responding", 99% of cpu usage :S, the memory usage is normal.

I haven´t got mods running.

Already tried before posting.

Ok, i´ll do it this night after work. How do i activate debug mode? Is there a command that enables the generation of a log?
Every time the game freezes, it creates a blank stderr file, and it always freezes when showing "horrors" or "battle turn X".

Command line for the debug mode is dominions3.exe -d (add more d's eg -dddd for more information) IIRC. If that gives you no more useful information, try logging the problem with Shrapnel support.

Have you read and followed the steps written in the manual for sorting this problem out?

Re: Crash on turn generation

Does this happen with ANY turn generation, or only on a specific game?

Re: Crash on turn generation

Unfortunately i don´t see a hint in the log generated in debug mode.

This is a link to a log file generated using the debug mode -dd.
http://uploading.com/files/FUJAQZT3/log.txt.html

This is a link to a log file generated using the debug mode -ddd.
http://uploading.com/files/FIL2BXRS/log-ddd.txt.html
In this log you can see that the game start an infinite loop.

Coroser,

If you want someone to look over your files, I would highly recommend simply uploading the text files to your post and NOT using a hosting service like "uploading.com". Clicking on those links is just begging for a good old fashioned spyware drive-by.

To anyone considering downloading via this particular service, do so at your own risk.

The only time I would recommend such a service is if it happened to be a very large file and there were no other alternatives.

I will not remove the links myself unless someone confirms my suspicion.

I have analysed the files but can't find anything significant. If you want further help I need to ask you if you have tried the method suggested at page 321 in your manual?

That's not possible, though, because the maximum size of text files that are allowed to be uploaded here is 19.5 KB. The OP failed to use RAR or ZIP to archive his text files, of course, which is why I wouldn't download them no matter if they're uploaded here or at uploading.com... :cold: I'm on a monthly volume quota.

Usage of these file hosting services is very common around here to circumvent the file size restrictions imposed on the forums. IIRC, it's even the official recommendation from Shrapnel to use third party file and image hosters if the file size limitations imposed on the forums are not enough. There is no harm done in opening a text file with log messages. Downloading and running of a custom Dom3 tool is a risk, of course, this could always be a trojan or other malware.

If the problem is specific to a particular game, could you upload the trn and 2h files?

Re: Crash on turn generation

Also, when you say you downgraded to previous patches, how did you do that? Did you reinstall the game from scratch? If not, try doing that in case it's got corrupted somehow.

I did not realize that there was such a low cap on text file sizes, and I know that use of third party file hosting services is common and even encouraged in many cases. I am also aware that text files are not full of viruses. My problem is with this particular file service and it's livid attempts to open pop up windows and attempts to exploit browser flaws in order to install spyware via improper use of system memory. My system was not compromised, but not everybody takes precautions.

Pop up advertising windows are not always malicious and this particular site might open 50 different adverts that are harmless, but at least one was trying something fishy, crashed my FF browser and generated a warning in Vista. It might have been simply an error or incompatibility, but I spend too much time cleaning other people's computers to not be annoyed by this.
