As was suggested earlier to make this as simple as possible post any mods or helpers, strat guides, or programs to this thread. You can post them using the attachment area above. It will give you an error or turn white but just let it finish.

Ok, I guess I will go first.

"Modding Article"

Attached is a .pdf Version of the two-part article posted over at www.computergamesOnline.com. I attempted to provide a basic description of the editable files and provide a brief synopsis of the current mods available earlier this year. Since I was the author and I did not sign any agreement with the site, I don't believe this violates any copyright laws. The .pdf file was the final Version of the article prior to sending it to them. I have also included a credits.txt file containing the information requested by Tim Brooks in the CD discussion thread.

UPDATE: Everyone who intends to submit a mod for placement on the next CD print, please post here. Mephisto and I are helping Richard out with this aspect of the print. We are developing a NEW list of the mods and corresponding authors who will be submitting. So please post your final Version of the mod here for public testing by everyone AS WELL AS A SUMMARY .TXT FILE SIMILAR IN CONTENT TO THE ONE POSTED BELOW. If you are still tweaking your mod and cannot post yet, at least post a .txt summary so that we can log your mod in.

The mods themselves and the readme's should have ABSOLUTELY NO COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL IN THEM.

Thanks

I haven't heard bug reports on the sim. turns LAN helper for a while. Similar functionality has been included in Stars!2 and MOO2, and I guess some people find it useful (I do!).

Re: POST DEFINITIVE MODS/PROGRAMS HERE!!!

Suicide-

Thanks for the post, you were on my list of modders to contact. As for the summary, it should also contain only the categories that Atrocities and Deathstalker posted below, which are:

(1) Element (one liner describing file)

(2) Brief Description (A couple of sentences with more details - you could probably pull this together from your existing one)

(3) Author & e-mail contact information

(4) Date of Last update & SE Version

The information about running/installing is excellent, but should probably be in a readme.txt zipped with the game. Again, this summary is for SG marketing purposes, hence the reason we want to get the same type of information from each mod in one place.

Thanks

I will try again to post.

The default cultural values are not balanced and neutral is not really a playable culture. I balanced the cultures based on the equivalent number of racial points required to achieve the same effect. The base value of 800 was determined by giving the neutral cultrue a 2 value in all categories. All other cultures where adjusted to equal 800. Excel spreadsheet included as documentation.

For Dracus,
in your upgraded formations.txt posted in this thread, there is 2 typos in "Compact" formation: a blank line between Position 4 Xpos line and Position 4 Ypos line, and an additional space before "Ypos" in Leader position line, which cause an error in the game's routines.
Please, can you modify the posted file?

Re: POST DEFINITIVE MODS/PROGRAMS HERE!!!

<BUMP> Richard, please step in here and clarify any of this if needed.

Since the Gold CD is now announced, you now see what we are actually collecting the mods for. We are still in the process of finalizing the actual mods on the disk and we will be limited based on the final footprint of the main SE4 program.

We would like all of the mods to be compatible with the ModLauncher created by Matryx. This basically involves two things: (1) the zipped file containing your mod must unzip to its own unique directory (example "TDM-ModPack"), and (2) include a "ModInfo.txt" file for the program to properly recognize your mod as a valid one. This program is available over in the scenario archive.

I am also asking everyone to provide me a brief summary.txt containing a basic description of the mod, the authors and a contact e-mail address. THIS FILE IS ESSENTIAL SO YOU GUYS (AND GALS) CAN GET CREDIT! A lot of mods that were posted earlier, did not include this or even a readme.txt.

As for making the mods "gold compatible", we are addressing that on a case by case basis since some of the mods will not require any changes.

Please contact me at "ctraber@ngn-tampa.com" if you have any questions, have a submission, or want to clarify what we already have of yours.

Thanks
-TG

Re: POST DEFINITIVE MODS/PROGRAMS HERE!!!

As requested I am posting detailed instructions for making mods 'Compatible' with the ModLauncher to be included on the new SE:IV GOLD.

Firstly, there is only one file that needs to be created in addition to your regular mod files.
This file merely contains information about your mod, the author, and other things.
It should be named 'modinfo.txt' and should reside in the ROOT of your mod's directory.
For example, if you've just made Pirates'n'Nomads but want to create a modinfo.txt so the mod can be used with the modlauncher you would go into your SEIV directory, then into your Pirates'n'Nomads Directory (or whatever it's called) and create it there.

The contents of the ModInfo.txt should be as follows (note: linenumber || item || comment): -
The links in my signature will let you download the mod launcher so you can a. use it; and b. test your modinfo.txt.

If you have any problems with this don't hesitate to contact me on ModLauncher@Matryx.org.uk

Edit: should be more readable now and not Uber-Wide

Edit2: Oh, it's spelt MATRYX http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif With a 'Y'

Hey hey hey! I got alot of fleets I'd like to see on this CD. I'll do one a night. I'm adding maker info and everything nice.

Are MM/Shrapnel going to rate anything that goes on? I highly suggest that you check everything on your CD works before putting it on. That basically includes checking the AI to make sure it doesn't crash the game on-load. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
If you find a bug, just reject them, and send the person an e-mail saying. Sorry. . get it fixed before dd,mm,yy or else its not on the Cd.

So enjoy the Angelican Regency Fleet first.

I'D LIKE TO BE INCONVINIENT AND ASK THAT ALL MY FLEETS THAT I SUBMIT BE ADDED TO ONE ZIPFILE, PROVIDING ONE UNZIPPING PROCEDURE/INSTALLATION FOR ALL MY FLEETS MAKING IT MORE CONVINIENT FOR OTHERS.
I acn't upload them all at once, I am prepared to interact with the compiler to get the best results. In this scenario: Presentation, Intergrity and Ease-of-Use is EVERYTHING.

Markavians - I don't think the new format allows direct attachments in the forum. What you can do is upload to the archive here:

and then put the link to it in this thread if you want everyone to know where you put it - including me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif But either way I will get it.

Just a reminder for everyone submitting mods for the Gold CD, that the deadline is midnight this Sunday (December 16th). Please upload your files to the SG archive and post a link to your final files here or (preferably) submit them directly to me via e-mail. Remember, the final Versions should be zipped (even if it is only one file), set to unzip into an appropriate subdirectory and should include a readme.txt explaining how to use/install, authors, etc. I will then be compiling a master list and forwarding all of the files to MM within 48 hours of that deadline, so I really will not have time to hunt anybody down if you miss the deadline or the Mod produces errors when it runs, etc. MM and Shrapnel will then make the final determination as to what actually goes on the Gold CD during the holidays. Again, if you have any questions, please contact me.

1) Sunday midnight: Is that 00:01 am or 11:59 pm on sunday? (I know it is not either one, but you get the idea http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

2) Will the Vikings be part of the Modpack or should I send them to you as an "independant" shipset?

3) What is the largest attachment you can handle? Some emails do not accept large attachments (2 MB?) and the Devnull Mod Gold could be slightly larger.

Re: POST DEFINITIVE MODS/PROGRAMS HERE!!!

Tampa, should we or should we not include AI with these new ship sets? I mean afterall, the AI for vs 1.57 is going to be all new, so what is the point of including "old" AI?

Here is the The United Freespace Alliance without AI.

I am almost finished with their counter race.

Tampa_Gamer December 14th, 2001 07:14 PM

Re: POST DEFINITIVE MODS/PROGRAMS HERE!!!

Atrocities - Include for now. We can always delete later.

Rollo - I meant late Sunday night (December 16th). I just need to have everyone's files by the time I start working on them (probably around 5am EST) Monday morning. I try and utilize time before I go to work and after I get home to get these things done.

Atrocities & Rollo - With regard to non-Gold AIs, I put a message to Aaron to see what he wants to do. There are several options, but without his permission, I do not feel comfortable posting examples of the AI_Default files from the current Gold build. There are essentially 3 files that must be modified to make the AI files "gold" compatible. These are:

(1) AI_Fleets
(2) AI_Strategies
(3) AI_Settings

Each of these files contains new settings in the Gold Version which when using pre-gold AIs, will cause errors. Note, I am not talking about the addition of Drones and Drone Carriers because Aaron has made it so they are not necessary (they can be added later).

One possible solution is to "deactivate" these 3 files in the AI (e.g. call it "old-AI_Settings.txt") so that the game will look to and use the Default_AI_[FileName] instead. I will keep you posted.

Unfortunately, neither I nor Shrapnel will have the time to go through every race, test and update for Gold. We are barely going to have enought time to run a cusory check and compile the 40+ mods coming in as it is.

Re: POST DEFINITIVE MODS/PROGRAMS HERE!!!

Atrocities- Updating a 1.49 AI to 1.57 is only a matter of adding some lines and (maybe) creating new .emp files. While I am not sure if either Tampa or Shrapnel will do this before putting them on CD (will you or not?), you can quickly provide a patch after the CD release or I can do this for you before sending them in, if you want, so the AI does not produce errors running under 1.57. (hmm, nice long sentence http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

Tampa- Sorry to ask again, but concerning Sunday at midnight: This is a little confusing for me and maybe my first question was not clear enough. I didn't mean if it matters sending in one minute earlier or later, but is that between Saturday and Sunday, or between Sunday and Monday?

Re: POST DEFINITIVE MODS/PROGRAMS HERE!!!

OK, for those who were asking about what they need to do to make their AI files compatible with Gold, I got permission from MM to post the relevant portions of the three files you need to change. Note these excerpts are from the AI default files and do not reflect my personal opinion on what the settings should be. That will vary from race to race. The are as follows:

(1) DEFAULT STRATEGIES DATA FILE
For each strategy, put the following three lines in at the end of each relevant section:

Type Priority Drones := XX (where X is the Last priority)

Dont Fire On Drones := False

Break Formation Drones := True

(2)AI DATA FILE - Settings
Add the following lines to the end

Ships don't move through minefields := false
Ships don't move through restricted systems := false
Clear orders on encounter enemy := false
Clear orders on encounter all := false
Percentage of total satellites to keep as planetary cargo := 40
Percentage of total drones to keep as planetary cargo := 40
Number Of Anti-Ship Drones Per Target := 3
Number Of Anti-Planet Drones Per Target := 3
Maximum Anti-Ship Drone Target System Distance := 5
Maximum Anti-Planet Drone Target System Distance := 5

(3)AI DATA FILE - Fleets
Add the following line to the end of the file

Percentage of Fleets to use for defense := 70

NOTE: Obviously the above changes will not enable the AI to actively use Drones and Drone Carriers, that can come later and is much more involved. But for now, these lines should prevent any errors from occuring.

Other members of the Gold beta test team, if I missed anything, please add to it here.

Thanks

Don't download the Earth Alliance at Rambies, these files are waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy old (but you can download the Bab5 Mod, these are newer files). Follow the below link, the TDM-ModPack is near the bottom and contains the Earth Alliance and the Narn.
