OT - quotes
I have seen some good quotes in sigs both here and in other places, and i have run across catchy things that ought to be shared, but just were not as symbolically apropriate as my bastardized theft of the description of the ancient god I use in my current sig.
here are a few i thought were worthy, feel free to post your own. "Peace is the ideal of a dieing nation" -Howard Phillips Lovecraft "He who lives in a glass house, should dress in the basement" -Anonymous poster on 'Revolution Calling BBS,' Circa 1990. "Gentlemen, history will be kind to us because I plan to write it." -Winston Churchill "Americans learn only from catastrophe and not from experience." -Theodore Roosevelt "Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and like it, never really care for anything else thereafter." -Ernest Hemingway well, thats about all for now. I could go on, but that should be enough to get people started. ------------------ "...the green, sticky spawn of the stars" (with apologies to H.P.L.) |

"As long as there are sovereign nations possessing great power, war is inevitable."

Re: OT - quotes
"The meek shall inherit the Earth. We'll take everything else, thank you."
-Anonymous, found on Independence War's B5 TC Mod "'Tis better to give than to receive' rings true to anyone who's seen what bullets can do." -Anonymous, same source as above "Hero, warrior, thief...there is little difference." -"Kosh-ism", same source "Honesty is a good thing, but it is not profitable to its possessor unless it is kept under control." -Don Marquis "War can never be avoided, only postponed for the benefits of others." -Niccolo Machiavelli "Keep your back to the wall and drink no wine." -Roman proverb Now, if I really wanted to, I could just dig up my copy of the Prince and have all sorts of nuggets of usefulness, but I think I'll stop there. At least for now. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif -Hotfoot "An closed mouth collects no feet." ------------------ L* GdY $? Fr? C--- S* T? Praise God and pass the ammunition.
God is on the side of the heavy battalions. I don’t know where either of these come from, but I would be interested if anyone else knows. |

When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.
-- Dom Helda Camara I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. ... corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. -- President Abe Lincoln No! Try Not -- Do, or Do Not; There is no Try... -- Yoda They make a desert and call it peace. -- Tacitus (defining Roman imperialism) Well hello Mr Fancy Pants. -- Ash (ever quotable) When war is declared, Truth is the first casualty. -- Arthur Ponsonby (British diplomat and writer) I'll stop now. I could look forever. -- Askan |

Re: OT - quotes
One of my personal Favorites:
"To punish me for my contempt for authority, fate made me an authority myself." Einstein From a Soviet-era officers' manual (or maybe it was a WWII German officers' manual; I can't remember): "The difficulty in planning against the Americans is that their officers never follow their own manuals." |

"Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country" Patton (...the movie. Not sure if Patton the general really said it. But's it's a good quote.)

I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us

"Oh people, know that you have commited great sins. If you ask me what proof I have for these words, I say it is because I am the punishment of God. If you had not commited great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you!"
Genghis Khan, Bukhara 1220 "If you can't say something nice about someone, kill them." Coach Bricka, Mutant League Football "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings." Cassius, Julius Casear Act I Scene 2 I'd post more, but my quotes list is on my other hard drive, which I can't access from this OS. |

"Tell the men to fire faster! Don't give up the ship!"
Captain James Lawrence after being mortally wounded. "Damn the torpedoes, Full speed ahead!" Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (actually they were mines, but the jargon of the time.) |

Re: OT - quotes
Hey, I collect quotes. Got some honking big text files full of them. Here are some samples:
Politicians: "The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." -- Thomas Jefferson "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" -- Benjamin Franklin "You don't have to explain what you never said." -- Calvin Coolidge "If you can find something everyone agrees on, it's wrong." -- Morris Udall "The jawbone of an *** is just as dangerous a weapon today as in Samson's time." -- Richard Nixon "Television is to news what bumper stickers are to philosophy." -- Richard Nixon Scientists: "An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field." -- Niels Bohr (1885-1962) "The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. The opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth." -- Niels Bohr (1885-1962) "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." -- Albert Einstein "Imagination is more important than intelligence." -- Albert Einstein "The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown." -- Carl Sagan Writers and comedians: "Biography lends to death a new terror." -- Oscar Wilde "The truth is rarely pure, and never simple." -- Oscar Wilde "The report of my death was an exaggeration." -- Mark Twain "Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please." -- Mark Twain "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -- Steven Wright "What's another word for Thesaurus?" -- Steven Wright "On the planet Earth, Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much... the wheel, New York, and so on... conversely the dolphins believed themselves to be more intelligent than Man for precisely the same reasons." -- Douglas Adams "A sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." -- Arthur C. Clarke Celebrities: "I don't like to share my personal life... it wouldn't be personal if I shared it." -- George Clooney "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." -- Bill Cosby "Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another." -- Madonna "I believe in censorship. After all, I made a fortune out of it." -- Mae West Movie and TV quotes: "Spock, the women on your planet are logical. No other planet in the galaxy can make that claim." -- Captain Kirk, Star Trek The more you drive, the less intelligent you are. -- Repo Man "When someone asks if you're a god, say YES!" -- Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson) in Ghostbusters "Everyone interesting is somehow mad." -- Dr. Who And some anonymous goodies: Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, and a dark side, and it holds the universe together ... Heisenberg might have been here. Artificial Intelligence is no match for Natural Stupidity. Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change. Women and cats do as they please. Men and dogs will just have to live with it. Never argue with a fool. People might not know the difference. You go YAHWEH and I'll go mine. -- Bumper sticker -- Yeesh... I'll be cutting & pasting all night if I don't just arbitrarily stop. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif |
