Spyware in new patch??

My anti-virus software deleted a file in the new patch. Now the game doesn't run. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Spyware in new patch??

More likely that the anti-virus software mistakenly identified something as a problem.
Which file was it?

Spybot Search and Destroy. I reinstalled the patch and the game still wont run. I don't have the name of the files deleted. I downloaded the patch to continue a game that I've been playing and when I ran the game Spybot deleted some files. I guess I have to reinstall the game.

I'm pretty sure it's not Spyware. JK's not exactly like that.

I run spybot S&d all the time on all my machines - runs fine.

I suspect you do have a virus....

I'm currently using versions 1.52 - 1.62 of spybot..

I'm sure that it was a misidentification. I just fixed the problem. I reinstalled, re-patched, and ran as administrator. This time it ran okay. :D

...or perhaps the KGB refined their trojan horse beyond Spybot's search capabilities :O

What probably happened was that they noticed the Snake Charmer mercenary leading militia was called Putin, and they hacked the game files to keep tabs on Dom3 players as a potential threat to national security.

By the way , don't you think that after last August this guy should get an upgrade to his troops? ;)
By the way, S&D had no problems with the patch for me.

You need to do a proper scan on your system. If Spybot detected something as being bad news, chances are you have some malware turning other files into bad news including those dominion files. Run one of the many freeware virus scans out there like AVG free edition, you may have something serious going on with your PC.

Re: Spyware in new patch??

Running anything on an already corrupted system to fix the situation seems to be a pointless exercise to me.

What....?

I've had several rather minor attacks over the years, application of the proper methods is always far superior to reformatting the hard drive.

One particularly nasty little worm required some fancy footwork in Safe Mode..... but I eventually squished it.

Anyway if it really is some sort of Adware, it's not THAT malicious, and its purpose certainly isn't destruction of the system. The majority of things that a typical user should ever encounter, are pretty easy to get rid of.

Ich is right to a point. It can be a pointless exercise for certain issues, but for a good bit of them it is much better than imaging/reformatting a computer. I hate imaging PCs because there is always something the user forgot to tell you about; so I think I have found just about every way around it.

Re: Spyware in new patch??

It was Spybot S&D Tea Timer. One of my buddies knew that it doesn't play well with Vista, and shut it down. All is well now. :D

Re: Spyware in new patch??

TeaTimer in Spybot S&D is evil and should never be installed. It is one of the more certain ways of screwing up your machine.

Wrana March 26th, 2009 05:10 PM

Re: Spyware in new patch??

I wouldn't say evil, but according to its own documentation it requires much resources for no better effect than you can get by using S&D itself periodically...

Foodstamp March 26th, 2009 08:52 PM

Re: Spyware in new patch??

Teatimer should be taken out of Spybot, it is the devil! The pop ups alone are pretty annoying.

Not an expert on Windows spyware. Quite the novice actually. Ask me about Mac viruses, and I might be some help.

So, there ARE some? :)

Yeah, been using Mac for about 15 years. I know pretty much all that affects them, even under the current Unix base. Oddly enough, I play Dom on my PC.
