Quote:

by llamabeast:
- Make sure you have the same mods enabled as the game you're playing in (Preferences->Mod Preferences) although only mods affecting pretender design, such as Conceptual Balance, actually matter
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions. Don't set a password, since for PBEM games they're not helpful and occasionally annoying (e.g. if you need a sub)
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have the game name in the subject line of your e-mail
- Join up in CHAT, we can talk there

It makes AI to work better. It turns off some cheap indy units. For example AI nations wont recruit useless militia units anymore, instead they will recruit more likely nationbased units wich are always better. This happens simply by increasing cost of those useless units.

sorry if this disqualifies me, but 1 hour is a little too fast for me and i'm not quite sure how it works. i mean, i have to sleep sometime;)

i can do maybe like 3 hours. unless i am understanding the sytem wrong.

You are right, modified setups a bit to clear things out.

Don't you think Orania is rather big for a 4-8 players game?

Frozen Lama April 3rd, 2009 03:14 PM

Re: Fast game for noobs!

ok 12h plus quickhost. that works perfect. thanks

It's good size map for noobs when there is 4-8 beginner players and 4-8 AI nations. It gives time and space for new players to advance and build up - atleast I think so :)

I'll try if we are playing 12h turns. I have only ever played with Late R'lyeh and only up to a sigle player turn 24. But I'd be willing to try something new.

P.S. My friend suggested I get this game and I really don't know what I'm doing.

Good, this is for you then. Don't worry, playing the game is the best way to learn. MP games are even better and most fun ones. You want to try Early R'lyeh?

Make sure to check out some of the guides and such in the Strategy Index. VERY helpful resource, escpecially for nations like EA R'lyeh that can be difficult to work out for a noobie.

Re: Fast game for noobs! (recruiting)

I'd play were I not already committed in (my first) 4 games.
I'd suggest the smaller maps for a faster game, 20 provinces per player and no AI.

Re: Fast game for noobs! (recruiting)

Sounds like a cool game. Not exactly a blitz game, but similar to a blitz. With some time to think about things a bit. Could we have a game like this for Vets? That would be very cool.

Re: Fast game for noobs! (recruiting)

Ok, we got 4 players. We can start with it, but few more would make it more fun.

I'm not sure if I qualify as a noob anymore, having played in a few games, but if that's not a problem and there's enough room, I could join. I'll be happy to give up my spot if someone newer signs up, of course. Also to be honest, I still consider myself something of a noob, especially with regards to multiplayer.

So if after all that you still don't mind me joining in, put me down as Marverni.

question: how do i change the E-mail address that llamaserver sends turns to?

Von_Altair April 4th, 2009 02:21 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (recruiting)

Yes, the game is up and everyone can send pretenders now. As long as the game didin't start (recruiting message at topic) a new players can join up.

- added instructions to first message for those who don't know how to do it.

P3D April 4th, 2009 02:44 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (recruiting)

Thinking about it, I'd play on a smaller map - say modified Urraparand or Parganos. 70 indie province for every player borders on crazy.
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showt...ht=urraparrand
My other suggestions are renaming on, perhaps difficult research, and extra gold for the Urraparrand map.

Von_Altair April 4th, 2009 04:52 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (recruiting)

As soon as simonlost has sent his pretender, the game will start!

Von_Altair April 4th, 2009 06:41 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

The game started. Email sent you information about 24h time interval, but it is changed to 12h. However I expect that we can do turns a lot faster than that in this phase!

If someone wants to change email address or change something, just let me know. Happy gaming!

The turn duration seems to be 48h or so - due time being Monday 2140GMT instead of Sunday 1540GMT or whatever.

Yeah, somehow server didin't allow me to setup that at start. But as soon as everyone sent pretenders, it did. It is now turned to 12h.

Oh my gosh, that's a big map for that many human players! It may be fun, but if it ends up feeling big don't be put off. Standard is probably around 15 provinces per player.

Frozen Lama: are you sorted re your e-mail address? Von_Altair should be able to sort it for you.

Hoep you all enjoy the game!

There is no need for such thing at this moment. Its only turn 7 going on. I think everyone can manage this early phase fast enough. This is supposed to be a fast game anyway. When it comes to turn 20-30, we will see how it goes and talk about it.

Thats going to be a problem for him. He has school 7:30-2:30, and generally has to stay after till ~4:00. Having looked at the game status, he is almost certainly going to stale this turn unless he gets it in at the last moment.

I know all this cuz he's my bro.

P3D April 6th, 2009 07:17 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

Change it to 15-18hrs then.

Frozen Lama April 6th, 2009 08:12 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

hey guys, i'm going to be going AI very soon if we don't get 24 host times. i can get in 1 turn every day very reliably, but like trumanator said, i cant do less especially with quickhost. i'm fine with staling this time around, but if we don't get 24hours, i may as well just set myself to AI now.

Trumanator April 6th, 2009 08:36 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

It would suck to set you to AI, maybe you should find a sub instead if the situation is going to be that bad?

Frozen Lama April 7th, 2009 07:46 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

well this is certainly a dumb way for my first MP game to go but playing every other turn isn't really playing. i will post for a sub this evening and if not i will go AI.

i think we have a problem. the game status says turn 15 and we're on turn 18. i get an email back saying i sent in wrong turn number. any ideas? if it looks like we need help, can we postpone so i don't stale?

Are you guys OK with a 24hour hosting time once the week starts? Most of us are approaching 30 provs and 4-5 forts so it takes more than a few seconds to play our turns (at least for me) so i figure its about time?

Caerun April 12th, 2009 03:01 PM

No objections to 24 from my end.

Frozen Lama April 15th, 2009 12:53 AM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

I know you guys are probably sick of me asking about hosting, but i'm over the 40 prov mark... i'm still making it, but if no one is actually against the idea, i'd like to extend the turns. I don't know if VonAltair is still reading this thread, but if any of the rest of you care, please input to see if me and caerun are the only ones who want it..

as a side note, the forges of Sauromatia are open, with much diversity, so if you need items, i can likely sell them to you in exchange most likely for gems or slaves.

P3D April 15th, 2009 02:24 AM

Second the extension of the turn.
Turns are pretty fast for this game anyways.

When I created this game, I had few things in my mind. 1st, it has to be fast turn game for beginner level players. I basically don't like an idea to have a training game with slow speed as the game will last for ages. That in my mind, I choosed a large map and only few human players and some AI, so it would be nice environment to learn things out with fast speed.

I am sorry if my game is too fast for your timetable, but thats what it is and will be so. I announced at the start, that it will be fast turn game as subject of this thread says clearly. You maded your choice when you joined in, knowing these facts. If situation changed, you can always find a new subplayer for your country or put it as AI player. As soon as this game is over, I will create a new game with normal 24h speed or join the one which has it. This game started and will be fast until the end. I am not going to change everything, just becose the one maded mistake by misreading the game description. Others joined in just becose they wanted fast game like me. If more than half (4/6) wants to vote for change, then it will happen.

Have a nice game and I wish you find that time somehow.

rdonj April 16th, 2009 02:50 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

Large maps do not make for quick turns. When maps get larger, micromanagement and number of tasks increase, and it takes longer to do your turns especially if they get more complex. Now, frozen llama has the largest empire in the game. 45 provinces is a LOT of provinces. In comparison yours is about half the size, which means about half the tasks to perform, track, and coordinate.

Your game is already quite far in at 33 turns. You are at the point where most games would already be at 48 hour hosting. 24 hours seems quite reasonable at this stage of the game and would not push your turns back overly much. That said I am not playing the game so I have no vote. But that seemed an overly harsh response to a reasonably-worded request for hosting to be lengthened, imo.

Caerun April 16th, 2009 02:51 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

I was under the impression that we'd be going for 24h hosting times around the 20-30 turns mark. I seem to recall something to that effect being in the opening post but there's nothing like that there now, so am I just remembering wrong? Which is perfectly possible, mind you.

Frozen Lama April 16th, 2009 09:11 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

well rdonj and Caerun have done most of my talking for me, but one thing i'd like to point out is that our Ulm player has never appeared on the forums so he likely does not count as a vote for an extension. and simonlost has not posted, but has staled twice, and usually is last or second-to-last getting his turn in, so i think we can assume he needs more time too.

Von_Altair April 19th, 2009 07:28 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

Just wanted to say to everyone that Frozen Lama attacked my back after my statement about timetable. We had peacedeal with us and he lyed about his unit appearings at border. Biggest nation doing such thing against someone who is already in a war. Smells badly like personal revenge as host didin't do what he wanted right away. Like I sayd earlier, time will change with 4/6 votes.

Just remember this guys name in future games. His words means nothing, they change direction like a wind.

Frozen Lama April 19th, 2009 08:31 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

while i admit to attacking him, and not being happy about the timetable, we were under no formal peace deal. he can review his private messages to check, but never was a NAP signed or any specific agreement. Also, it makes perfect strategic sense to attack the weakest human nation on my borders especially while they are busy. if that seems wrong to Abysia, i don't know what to say.

Edit: oh and he also ignored the fact that one player isn't a forum member, and another has not posted yet staled twice.

Frozen Lama April 19th, 2009 11:23 PM

Re: *Noobieworld* Fast game for noobs! (started)

sigh,

I am sorry to see how nasty this thread has become.
I admit, at least 50% is my fault. For that I am sorry, and i will endeavor to be more polite from now on.

I know it appears bad, but in all honesty I am really confused right now. VonAltair, I truly don't know where you think we had a "peacedeal." I had no intention of being backstabbing. Maybe it was my own ignorance, but I always took special care to make sure I never said any definite peace terms, and always used the word "yet" regarding invading you. I am sorry if it was unclear. I also, don't like the timetable, but it had no bearing on my attacking you. Abyssia is the only Human player that I have more than a 1 province border with, so it is stratigically obvious that I would assault them soon. The fact that Abyssia was already at war has an obvious tactical appeal, since it meant he had to split his forces. This may seem distasteful, but it also a simple strategic move.

Like I said above, I apologize for how nasty this thread has become, but I feel that I am in the right here.

Ahh you trying to look like an angel now? I thought we don't bring this to public in our private chat, but if you try to pretend and show out like an angel fine.

It doesn't matter how you play with words and terms, facts are:
- You lied about your units at our border. You told ne they are garrisoning borders. As soon as you got enough of them, you attacked.
- You lied about our peace. You try to explain everything by words and methos, but it doesn't change the fact
- You did all this, right after my message about hosting thing. This sneaking backstab was your style to react on host and now you try to cover it with that "kindly" words? :)

I'll copy paste some of your PM:s considering this:
- "well i admit i find some pleasure in the sneak attack"
- "i have no remorse in attacking you. have fun with my tartarians"
- "i don't deny my dislike of the hosting scheduale, and i admit i should have read more carefully when i joined up"

I don't want to start flamewar. I just want that you get what you earn. Lying and doing backstabs won't deserve any respect/trust, especially if you do such things becose of host didin't do right away what you wanted.

Now, I just wish you a good game, hope you really enjoy you strategy :)
