OOB048 Brazil update: Hinds!
First time I heard there was a tender going on for new Brazilian attack helicopters, but here come some news:
12 Mi-35M Hinds to be delivered starting 2010! http://en.rian.ru/russia/20090406/120935753.html http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=3840205 (old news from the negotiations) Quote:

Re: OOB048 Brazil update: Hinds!
Looks like the deal may be heading towards completion:
http://www.shephard.co.uk/news/3531/...design-review/ The Mi-35M would be known as the AH-2 Sabre in Brazilian service. Deliveries could start later this year and be completed next year. |

Re: OOB048 Brazil update: Hinds!
The Brazilians have started to receive the ‘AH-2 Sabre.’ Their first batch of three Mi-35Ms rolled off the production line in Rostov last month.

Re: OOB048 Brazil update: Hinds!
They are operational in the OOB starting 1/2010. If here any different be between then and the release of the next patch ( ....probably early March but that's just a guess right now ) .... let me know and I need to know how they are being armed. I doubt they are being set up to deal with hords of tanks pouring through the Jungle.

The first batch of Hinds/AH-2s has been painted up. They will be transferred to a base in the Amazon (Porto Velho, Rondônia) by the end of the year. Their main planned role is to deal with any drug traffickers who spill over into Brazilian territory from Columbia or elsewhere. I haven’t seen any photos of a fully armed AH-2 yet. I’ve seen some artists’ impressions of armed AH-2s on the Web. I don’t know whether they are official or not. They show AH-2s armed with rocket pods. |

http://www.haaland.info/leopard1/world/ Says..."Brazil bought 87 used Belgian Leopard 1A5BE in 1997. Last order received in january 1999." That appears to be wrong but I recognize that website's as being available for some time and it may have been the source of this confusion. 1A5's have been around since the Mid 80's This website http://www.army-guide.com/eng/product152.html says..."The Brazilian Army has purchased 87 unmodified Leopard 1 MBTs from the Belgian Army with the first batch of 33 vehicles arriving in Brazil late in 1997.The second batch of Leopard 1 MBTs was delivered in mid 1998 with the remaining batch following early in 1999." That website also goes on the say..... "On 28 October 2009, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) handed over the first of 220 LEOPARD 1A5 main battle tanks to the Brazilian army at the company's site in Kassel, Germany." The OOB's have 1a1's in 1997 with upgrades made in 2006 and Leopard 1A5-CC in 2005. Those may have been upgades or that may have been when this deal was first mentioned. I did find 1A5's in that OOB going back to DOS version 2 back in July 2003 so when those were put in 2005 was two years down the road not 4 years past so at the time that may have been the best info we had This website http://disarmament.un.org/UN_REGISTE...2?OpenDocument indicates Brazil imported 28 Leopard 1A1-CC in 1997 and that 59 Leopard 1A1 CC will be received in 1998. So yes it appears the scandanavian website that credited Brazil with Belgian Leopard 1A5BE in 1997 may indeed be wrong and those should be 1A1's. I'm still digging to see if the Brazilians upgraded some of those 1A1's to 1A5's before this latest shipment from Germany. Don |
Re: OOB048 Brazil update: Hinds!
So now it looks like I wasn’t mistaken.
Jane's Armour and Artillery 2002 says that the Belgians decided to upgrade only 132 of their Leopard 1A1s to Leopard 1A5(BE) standard and put the remaining 202 1A1s up for sale. The Brazilians originally purchased 87 of these “unmodified Leopard 1 MBTs”. The first batch of 33 vehicles was delivered “late in 1997”. Jane’s Armour and Artillery 2005-2006 states that the Brazilian inventory included “128 unmodified Leopard 1 MBTs from the Belgian Army” in 2005. There is no mention of upgraded Leopard 1A5s. |

Without starting a new thread and staying in line with helos for Brazil just came across this concerning the French EC725 transport helo. Contracted in 2008 with deliveries to start and be completed in 2010. Some might find interest on a side note in contract with France by Brazil in building it's first SSN. Sources listed oldest to newest T to B.
