Re: OT - Computer problems
Well, first thing is to check your monitor & cable.
If you can't find any physical damage, such as bent pins & whatnot, try plugging it into a friend's computer. If the monitor works fine, it could be your video card. |
Re: OT - Computer problems
i had the same problem a while ago, only my problem was with blue.
My warranty wasn't expired yet so i returned it to the manufacturer and got a new one. Like SJ said, if the monitor works fine with another computer, it could be your video card, if it doesn't work fine, it's broken. So you don't necessarily have to get a new computer http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: OT - Computer problems
Adjust the connector a little. That could get it to work (the connector on the back of the computer)
If not, then do whats already been said too. |
Re: OT - Computer problems
Hit it....rEEEly hard... http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif this worked with my Commadore 64!! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif (then again, I did go through about 7 or 8 of them!)...Currently I just curse at my computer when it does things I don't like...my fiance of course just laughs, except when it rEEE-boots on her....

OT - Computer problems
grrrrr..... Anyone know why an antique excuse for a computer would suddenly decide to stop displaying any greens of any sort. Kinda makes it hard to see how many organics you are producing, as well as my personal shipset (which happens to be all green!!!) in 3 PBW games. Well, ok, I'm about to be eradicated from one of the games, but still....
Any advice would be appreciated (about the computer problem, not the imminent PBW loss. Although some help in that area probably wouldn't hurt, either...) Oh, and before you say "get a new computer", let me just say that that doesn't exactly fit into the family budget at this time.... |
Re: OT - Computer problems
Sounds like the gfx card -> monitor cable to me. Give it a jiggle and see if that has any effect on the image. You should be able to get a new cable for a small amount of money, unless it's on of those ones that can't be disattached to the monitor.
Let us know how you got on. ------------------ SE4 Code: L GdY $ Fr- C- Sd T!+ Sf-- Tcp-- A% M>M+ MpD! RV Pw Fq+ Nd- Rp+ G- /SE4 Code Go to my meagre SEIV pages to generate your own code. |
Re: OT - Computer problems
Check advanced video properties to make sure you haven't turned off/ down the green part of the signal.
You probably need to take the monitor to a repair shop. I've seen this problem with a monitor not showing red. I've seen another system where the red would intermittantly go off, a 14 mile car trip fixed it and then broke it when we were bringing it back home. It's something to do with the electron gun (or some similar doohickey) and timings. It's fixable, but only by someone who knows..... Getting it fixed will cost as much as a new monitor these days, so either way you get a monitor that works. Of course, if wiggling the cable or hitting it really hard work, all the better. |
Re: OT - Computer problems
so how is it going dummluck.
Any progress ------------------ Inter arma silent leges |
Re: OT - Computer problems
Progress? well........
It kind of fixed itself. While I was using it!!!! The green just .... came back. No flicker, no nothing. It didn't do it at the same time as the screen saver came up or went down, and the computer was just sitting there as I was typing an email. And Poof! The Computer Gods reached down, and my computer was miraculously fixed! Wierd. Very wierd. Man, I gotta get a new computer. Do you know how hard it is to tell how many organics are on a planet when you can't see any greens? |
Re: OT - Computer problems
nice to see your problem is solved dumbluck, now i got a problem with my modem.
I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything today, because programs kept crashing. But somehow my modem doesn't want to work anymore, it installed properly, but when i try connect to the internet, it doesn't respond. It really doesn't make sense, because i changed nothing about the modem. On a somewhat related note, win98 sees my floppy drive as a PCI Comunication device which needs drivers to run properly. The floppy drive works ok now any ideas on this ? i'm on a laptop now, with a 800x600 screen http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif and the battery is pretty low, so i'll stop now |

Re: OT - Computer problems
i got the drivers from the cd i got with the modem.
the modem shows up in the Device manager (if that is the correct term, i've got the dutch Version) and it gives no errors. it worked before i formatted, so the drivers can't be wrong |
Re: OT - Computer problems
About the monitor that lost the green:
That problem didn't fix itself. Take the time to check the cable and the vid card. Make sure the cable is tight, same for the vid card. My gut reaction would say the problem lies in the monitor, esp if it's a trinitron tube design. In short find the problem, because it will come back to haunt you. About the modem problem: You didn't mention if the modem was internal or external. If it's internal, make sure it's plugged into the correct com port. Check the cable (damage, looseness, etc). Also, check to be sure that Win selected the appropriate com port for the modem (Start->Control Panels->Modems; select modem, click 'properties'; check the com port). If that is ok you could try the followying, though I'm fuzzy on Win98 (been a couple years since I've done this seriously), but this does work on ME (sometimes). Add new hardware, and pick a generic driver for the modem. Don't let Win pick it; you have to manually specify the driver. Try different ones... |
Re: OT - Computer problems
Crap, I forgot to mention this:
Do not assume that cables are good (tight, no damage), or that vid cards are seated properly. ;-) If you have opened your case or move your computer occasionally, there is the chance that you have jiggled something loose. There is also the chance that a mouse (or some other dastardly vermin, like a kitten) decided that your cable needed some 'modifications'. I once had a kitten that worked very hard to ensure that any phone line in the house was good and dead. The bastard. :-) |
Re: OT - Computer problems
it's an internal modem
i assume it's plugged in ok, since it did work before i formatted. i don't have any pets to chew on the cable, and the cable works, i checked that. <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Add new hardware, and pick a generic driver for the modem. Re: OT - Computer problems
guess where i'm sitting right now...that's right, behind my own copmuter with a WORKING modem http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
i removed the modem, started windows, shutdown my computer, installed the modem again, started windows again, and it pretty much installed itself. |
