Installing mod and map
Hi, i'm beggining in using mods and new maps, and i can't manage to install them on my macintosh.
What are the different steps to get a mod to work on the game? Thanks, and sorry for the noob question  |
Re: Installing mod and map
Just look for the folder called "dominions3" that contains your "savedgames", key, and etc. Create new folders called "mods" and "maps" and drop the files in there. That's it!
(Assuming you have already downloaded the mods/maps and extracted them from their archives...) |
Re: Installing mod and map
I've put all the files in the "mods" folder, but it's still not recognizing it.
For exemple i downloaded "Dragon kings" nation mod, should i put the folder containing all the files in mods or only the files within it? Using mods on macintosh isn't a problem right? Thank you Edit : It's working for maps, but still not for mods. |
Re: Installing mod and map
Tauryue, you really should look before you post. This question has been answered both in the FAQ and in the thread just half way down the first page of this sub forum.
Look for the thread titled: How do you install a mod? |
Re: Installing mod and map
Actually, I'm having the same problem. I've spent the last three hours searching the forums and fiddling with my file and I also can not get any mods to show up in my mod preferences screen. Once I was able to get a map to show up, but when I upgraded to 3.23b that went away, too.
Is this a macintosh thing? I've read that maybe I need to open up the files in a particular text editor and save them from it before the application will recognize them. Can anyone confirm this? If so, what text editor should I use? Thanks. |
Re: Installing mod and map
Unfortunately the FAQ entry assumes Windows, since I have no experience using a Mac. It should be the same, though someone who actually uses a Mac and knows how it works would be in a better position to comment.
As far as text editors, map and mod files made with Notepad tend to be screwed up because it uses non-Unix endlines. Crimson Editor for example makes mod and map files that do not suffer any problems. Notepad++ and various other free text editors would also work. |
Re: Installing mod and map
Screwed up how? By not having hard newlines? I haven't seen any other problem caused by notepad.

Re: Installing mod and map
Some people have had a problem getting mods working when making them in notepad, then having everything fine once they saved the exact same text in an editor that uses Unix-type endlines.

Re: Installing mod and map
I've opened up the mods in Vim editor, saved them as mac format and as Unix format. Neither works. I'm really frustrated. :( I've been playing this game for years now, and to think that something this stupid is preventing me from experiencing the rest of what it has to offer is aggravating.
But rants aside. I'm going to uninstall the game, re-install it and then patch up to 3.23b. I'll let y'all know how it goes. |
Re: Installing mod and map
Sorry for the double-post, but Its been 30 minutes and it won't let me edit my last post.
Ha Ha, I forgot how easy things are on a Mac. There's no such thing as uninstalling and re-installing here. I just delete the old program and copy the new back over from the CD again. I even copied the sample Vaetti mod from the CD, too. But that pleasantness was short-lived. I set up the file structure like it says to do in the forums... still no mods or maps appear, not even the sample Vaetti mod that comes with the CD. Please, people, does anyone have a solution? |
Re: Installing mod and map
Yay! :)
When I opened up Dominions, after re-installing it, I noticed that there were still saved games available. "Aha!" I said, "how is this possible?" So I seached my hard drive for files or folders with the name "saved" and lo, what should I find but an entire Dominions3 Folder with a maps folder and a mods folder that no documentation or message ever told me it created. And here I had created my own such folders thinking I was doing exactly as I should. So I moved the mods and maps over to the newly found, but original, folders... and voila! It all works as it should. Man... I was hunting down some really obscure trails. But I know a lot more about the various text editing endlines than I did yesterday! :D So for those of you with Macs, search your hard drive for the dominions3 folder before you create your own. You just might be surprised. Happy ending. |
Re: Installing mod and map
Thanks for posting your results, Azriel :-)
Tbh, could at least the FAQ be updated regarding this, please? I admit I'm not terribly osx savvy, but I just spent almost an hour searching the forums/trying stupid things before finally finding this thread. Apparently the savegame/mods directory tree is created directly in your homedir (grr, you could have atleast asked me). |
