Elf Bane bug?

I think I read somewhere here that the elf bane, 1H axe, is bugged and wont perform as intended (i.e. slay magic) Is this confirmed?

Re: Elf Bane bug?

I believe the bug is that a MR roll negates the damage from the axe as well as the slay magic effect, making it a pretty ineffective weapon. Should be doing a good chunk of AP damage even if they save...

Re: Elf Bane bug?

Oh. That's probably not hard to fix with a mod command or two.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

It's not listed in the bug thread... so if this item is bugged then the developers don't know about it.

I think the same problem is with Infernal sword. It looks very tasty but is not that effective in practice because "Banish to inferno" attack must pass the MR check. It is also stated nowhere, I think.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

A MR check on secondaryeffect does not cancel damage from the primary weapon unless that weapon is also subject to MR check.

Elf Bane is one of those things that can often be useful against high protection SCs/thugs that are magic beings, but since it'äs only AP, not AN, it's possible that the damage inflicted is not enough to pierce protection and if the MR check succeeds, the secondary does nothing either.

Toss in regen, and it might well seem like nothing is happening. I've seen Elf Bane work just fine against lesser stuff for normal damage.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

Could be the bug was something more specific to the situation I encountered it (I had a major fire blessing?). Here's the thread where I mention specifics:

i think elf bane is bugged.

the infernal sword I am unsure of - banish to the inferno shouldn't require an MR check.

The F9 bless would do that. F9 causes flaming weapons, and fire blessing is bugged so that if a weapon has a secondaryeffect (like the brands or elf bane), the secondaryeffect is replaced by the flaming weapons. Same with D9. So if the assassin mentioned in that thread had a shroud or was holy and self-blessable, that's probably what happened.

I'm still a bit unclear on the repel mechanics myself, so I need to brush up on those.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

No, I know about that mechanic of the fire blessing, but that doesn't account for the lack of damage from from the primary weapon hit. Also, after I thought about it this thug was not blessed so the fire blessing wasn't present. I was attacking with 27 AP damage against protection of 35 if the shield blocked (though I had a higher attack than the defense so most of the hits should have landed without the shield). 10 hits according to the debug log and no damage was done. The logs indicated the slay magic check was passed then no damage was generated (with no indication of luck or anything like that). It might not be that the damage was negated by the save, but something buggy was going on.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

FWIW, it was a Mictlan Thelepuchi trying to assassinate an Argatha Marble Oracle.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

Do you have the debug log for that still around? If you do, please send it to Illwinter (address in the shortlist thread) along with a link to this discussion thread so JK can take a look at it. This is something that needs his attention, given what you've told me.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

Sorry, that's from a game almost a year ago. I looked and I don't still have it. I suppose there's a slim chance Ano might have it as it's his Oracle I was trying to assassinate.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

Well, setting up a test with a map file and the debug mod would not be too difficult if you have the time and the inclination to do so. You could also do multiple runs of the same combat, which would give more statistical reliability.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

I can do it. What's the setup we want? Elf Banes + fire 9 blesS?

Re: Elf Bane bug?

Interestingly, I did find the turn immediately before the battle in question archived in my email so I know exactly how things were set up. Attatched. It's in province 143, an assassination attempt by Cihuacoatl the Tlahuelpuchi against the lone Marble Oracle SC (fire brand, vine shield, dragon helm, robe of shadows, boots of quickness, ring of the warrior, lucky pendant....ethereal, fire immune, and lucky, a lot of stuff going on). I guess I was wrong, there was a shroud of the battle saint and a 9f 9s 4b blessing, assassin equipped with shroud, elf bane, and precious (bogus' ring). 'course I'm gonna feel like a dumbass if my memory from a year ago is wrong...

Err...getting an error trying to attach the file, PM me an email address if anybody wants me to send it.

Re: Elf Bane bug?

I'd be interested to see the results with and without the fire bless.

archaeolept June 29th, 2009 02:08 PM

Re: Elf Bane bug?

the thing is the fire bless should only interfere w/ the secondary effects, not w/ the primary damage. something interesting may be going on :)

Try to zip it up first. The forum doesn't like arbitrary file extensions.

Here's the turn file showing exactly what was set up.

Edi June 30th, 2009 02:24 AM

Re: Elf Bane bug?

Checked the turn and yes, there is a shroud with a F9 bless, which is what causes all the trouble. That's why slay magic never triggers and if the attacks were always repelled (and which is why no damage from the main weapon itself) and since the oracle is fire immune, the flaming weapons do nothing to it.

So if there is indeed some bug with the elf bane, it needs testing without the bless bugs messing things up.
