JK confided in me it isn't a horse grooming sim, so at least that's one dev team not flooding the market with those.

Yes. But they'll only tell people who stop asking.

You say that now but you will not be able to resist Illwinter's shiny new toy! Your MR is not high enough, even with armour of souls, lead shield and amulet of magic resistance!:)

It all depends on the shiny new toy. Take a look at how Triumph Studios dropped the AgeofWonders series which still has an active community to create their shiny new toy called Overlord which has a very dead forum.

While Overlord provided some interesting concepts/ideas it was overall a shallow unmemorable game.

Why play AoW when there's Dominions? I just never got that game, it's overshadowed in every way by Dom3.

I must disagree ever so slightly... in AoW I never really felt overwhelmed by micromanagement. It could be tedious, yes, but such modest tedium couldn't rival even medium sized late-games of Dominions 3.

There's also something to be said for the plotting out and controlling (without being AI-overridden) of movement and spells.

Make no mistake, I want to be like KO and JK when/if I grow up. They have done something that. just. blows. my. mind. Especially now that I've taken up multi-player gaming on Dom3.

Actually I would have dropped AOW:ShadowMagic if this was true. There's several features available within AOW:ShadowMagic which are superior. Now I'm a big fan of both games, but I'll only list how AOW:ShadowMagic is better:

1) AoW:ShadowMagic has a map editor where you can create many types of events... can't touch events in Dominions_3. Very important for creating campaigns and special maps.

2) AoW:ShadowMagic allows for multiple players on a single battlefield... Dominions_3 allows only two players on a single battlefield. Multiple players on a battlefield offers more strategic options.

3) AoW:ShadowMagic has better graphics... for me graphics are not very important, but it's enough to mention. I'll also add there's more terrain types available.

4) AoW:ShadowMagic provides overall more options in the map editor. In the editor a player is able to create a wide variation of unique items... and even a greater amount after applying the 1.4 patch.

5) Experience is significantly more meaningful and strategic for heroes in AoW:ShadowMagic instead of a fixed amount of improvements.

Now clearly Dominions_3 also beats AOW:ShadowMagic in many categories as well, but both are great longterm keepers with virtually endless replay value.

I agree that AoW:SM is still a superb game. In fact I'd tell people to buy it over dom3 because it's so much cheaper.

Cheaper? AoW:SM is $308.99!

Ya gotta wonder if anyone has actually bought a copy from them.

I've seen AOW:SM go for next to nothing many times. I guess it might have now spiked up in price or something, but in the past 5 years or so I've seen it in a lot of bargain bins for like 3-7 quid.

Omnirizon July 31st, 2009 05:37 PM

Re: So Have We Gotten Any Info

what's a quid? is that sort of like a silver piece?

analytic_kernel July 31st, 2009 06:59 PM

Re: So Have We Gotten Any Info

With silver closing at around US$14 per ounce today, that might push Sombre's estimate of the game price to be closer to Krol's quote, depending on how many ounces of silver are in a silver piece.

But, in all seriousness, I think that "quid" is Brit slang for a 1-pound note, or so I've inferred during my long readership of BOFH. Probably the precise meaning can be found in an online slang dictionary.

According to Amazon's statistics, 58% of the people who click on your link will end up buying the item for $308.99. Wow.

Wow, I own the entire AoW series. I am looking at the Shadowmagic Disc right now. Anyone got a thousand dollars laying around? I will sell you all three :).

If I reload WoW it will only be to check out the free player-run servers. Not because they are free but because they tend to be less crowded and more interesting. I find that to be true with any MMORPG. I hear the player-run WoWs are getting pretty good and stable.

At the moment Im heavily swept back into Ultima Online. Its free to download and the free servers (over 300 of them) are MUCH better than the paid ones. I finally settled into one that is nice and not too extreme.

Hey my wife loves me playing Ultima Online.
I get to pack-rat, try my hand at making things, visit other peoples junk sales, kill & skin animals...
all the things she hates me doing in our garage.

i loved AoW: SM until i noticed i could research the whole magic tree before the game actually started. quit then

Well you could always, you know, not do that. I mean if it's ruining the game for you. But then I guess you wouldn't be able to complain about it?

DakaSha August 11th, 2009 06:26 AM

Re: So Have We Gotten Any Info

im amazed at your pseudo-psychological evaluation implying im a compulsive complainer due to my comment about a game (and possibly due to not liking strategy ai's)

also your suggestion is pretty ridiculous. sorry i offended your game.
