army orders
I seem to recall that there is a way to view the orders and formations of all units who are moving into a particular province. This is pretty useful if you are attacking a province with troops from more than one starting space. But I cant remember how to view that, can anyone tell me? Thanks!

As far as i know, no such button exists

Re: army orders
Press "y" after assigning focus (selecting) the destination province.

didn't know that one

Re: army orders
There's just one quirk:
Any units currently in the destination province appear in the army list, but do not appear on the placement grid. It's slightly annoying, because you have to do placement for guys moving in with y, then do placement for guys already in the province the normal way, unless you are especially good at moving around invisible boxes. You can use this to place units being sent into a friendly province to reinforce the army already there, or to help with a break siege attempt for example, but you'll have to deal with the problem listed above. |
Re: army orders
The 'y' key is a godsend, but another annoying thing about it is that while on the 'y' key screen, you can't use the 'shift' key to quickly split large squads like you can on the normal army view screen. It's been mentioned several times in the past, and while not a big thing, you will find it becomes irritating pretty quickly.

On a side note, perhaps insane commanders should be given more leeway to wander as they please? What padded walls can contain the crazed and tortured souls of dead gods? |

Instead, I now use empty 3rd provinces like Illuminated One suggested. Still have problems sometimes though, as many a time have I opened up a new turn file to find a load of my mages having a picnic in the middle of nowhere. "What the hell are all my mages doing in THAT province?" "Oh yeah, I sent them there for easy planning, and then forgot to tell them where I really wanted them to go" |
Re: army orders
Oh! Thats a neat trick. I'd never thought of the 3rd province idea, but it really works around the "units in the destination province" problem. I do see how it would be easy to forget to reset everyones orders back to the correct targetted prov before submitting the turn tho :)

Re: army orders
Another trick which I use for when I can't use a 3rd province due to movement restrictions etc, is to have two (windowed) instances of Dominions running. What I'd then do is this....
I'd start Dominions up as normal, set-up my troops already in the target province how I want them. Then press 'End Turn' (to save the army placing), then go back into that turn and open the army screen again. Then I'd run another instance of Dominions, and in that one I'd go to the army screen of the army I am moving into the target province. Then i can switch back and forth between the two Dominions I have running to see how the two army set-ups fit together. It's far from perfect, but it is a good way I find of seeing if two or more converging armies fit together properly or not. Also useful to make sure that if you are trapezing/teleporting in a buffing mage from far away, that he is setup to be near/surrounded by the units he is meant to be buffing. (For Legions of Steel casting for instance) Although always make sure that you get the saving and quitting right for the two Dominions you have running, as you need to remember that they are both using the same files, and therefore you can't save changes to both games if they are both running at the same time. So one of the games has to be quit, while the the other one can be saved. With the point being that one of them is only running to reference, while you are using the other one to do (the trickier parts) of your turn with. |
