How to get into the victorious nations/hall of honor

Dominions, as we all know, is a game of both skill and luck. One needs to be intimately familiar with the ways in which combat dynamics work out, how given units can be used, tricks available, what tricks to expect, and to have some feel and intuition for what other players are thinking. However, one is also at the mercy of the RNG. bad luck events on the first turn can kill a game, inopportune barbarian attacks, bad luck rolls in combat, zigging when one should have zagged, or simply having the political dynamics, political-geography, and who chooses to go to war with whom not working out in your favor.

So how to become a good dominions player and get to the hall of fame?

Simple. It is the Law of Large Numbers.

All you have to do is enroll in as many games as possible. You will get better at Dominions because you are playing lots of games, and you will eventually have the balls bounce your way, since you are just in lots of games

Often this will mean that you can't give adequate attention to games like you should. That's OK. You can wait until the last minute to get turns in. Also, determine where you can consistently be late with turns, and just do that. You can take advantage of the fact that turning a nation to AI can wreak havoc to a game. Even if you are a deadbeat when it comes to getting your turns in, no one will really do much about it because the alternative is worse.

So who cares about other players enjoyment of the game? Enroll in 10, 20, even more games, and let the Law of Large Numbers work for you!

Can't say if you're serious or sarcastic or what. But I don´t think many of the "hall of famers" are playing like this. I rather feel that the longer people play, the more polite and responsible they seem to get as players.

Neither do you learn as much by playing like that, I beleive you´ll learn much more by paying good attention to a few games, or as many as you can handle.

I don´t even think it would improve your chances much. Mathematically yes, but in practice you´ll get bored quickly and develop a tendency to give up games too easy. Throwing away many potential victories.

The sarcasm in the last paragraph is a giveaway. It's not a serious post. :)

Wow, I am pretty disappointed. I thought this was going to be a guide on how to get your commanders into the Hall of Fame :).

I had the same thought as Foodstamp. And I've noticed that a lot of the new people tend to burn themselves out of Dominions 3 by joining way too many games.

If this was Lingchih I would suspect drinking was involved... :D

As it is, I still suspect it ;)

It might be a comment on the general concept of a players hall of fame. Every time the subject comes up there is discussion on its effectiveness.

But oh well. Some people really like ladder competitions and such. Its not really a problem as an alternative as long as no one tries to make too much of it such as trying to declare it as the games entire purpose. :)

I have found the information about which NATIONS won as being semi-useful for at least debunking some of the "best/worthless" commentary. But Ive never put much stock in which players won.

Really? I actually tend to see it the other way around. Past a certain point, national distinctions tend to blur, and it becomes more about the player at the helm than the nation itself.

Sure, game spammage can help you work up it, but the way dominions is set up its not like you can just sit down and pump out 50 games in a weekend like you can with some games. It takes so long and gets so detailed that I think that the "leaderboard" so to speak is much more accurate for Dominions than for a lot of games.

For me, the Law of Large Numbers is spoiled by the Law of Needing To Hold Down A Job.

Omni - who is the OP in reference too? I'd like to avoid playing with whoever that is if they go AI in most of thier games.

It isn't in reference to anyone in particular.

It is actually aimed at the 'Land Rand' game in which we've been on a 72 hour schedule since turn one because people won't get their damned turns in, and no one desires setting the repeat offenders to AI, or even just stale them, since that creates a lot of havoc and disrupts the game.

I don't know if the cause is that these people are in a lot of games. However, other games I've been this has been behind people being late.

There's certainly players who can handle being in many games.

Going with the classic powerhouse nations is another great way to get into the hall of fame early.

Truman, are you suggesting that I usually play my turns drunk?

Hmm, yeah, probably right on that. I play under the leadership of Dionysus. It works out more times than not.

Gods help you all if I ever decide to play sober :)

For me it works the opposite, the more games I join the less fun I have. That's why I've decided that the magic number of 2 works as maximum for me.
For Pasha I usually make an exception of going up to 3 :)

For the life of me I won't join a fourth.

3 < # games ==> :banghead

Re: How to get into the victorious nations/hall of honor

I can't take Omni's post seriously at all.

The people in the Hall of Fame, by and large deserve to be there, I have fought most of them 1v1 so I should know!

1 or 2 games may have been lucky wins due to players going AI or staling but compared to the total games in the HoF that is insignificant.

Like Wraithlord says, concentrating on just 1-3 games will net the best results for experienced players.

LAND RAND has been very unlucky, hit by several delays/dropouts which is very, very unusual for a Pasha game, which are by invitation only (mostly) and usually have only very experienced players in them who should know better!

I've advocated staling the slackers every time Pasha has mentioned it on IRC. Its not like the stated hosting schedule is particularly onerous. Not being able to meet it *and* not asking for an extension means you deserve to be staled.
