WinSP - NAVAL
 
Hey All, its good to see that the WinSPMBT and WW2 still has a live and active fanbase out here - I myself am returning from a 2 year break away from SP, and am loving every minute of it once again.

A few years ago, I remember coming across a post on this forum by a guy called Welk, and he was involved in a Naval conversion of WinSPMBT. Has anyone encountered an updated and recent version of this conversion?

Moreover, anyone from shrapnel games can answer this: is there a possibility for a future stand alone NAVAL Win SP?

For the first question, try to use the search tool, type in somehting like naval.

as for the second question, i ain't shrapnel games spokesman, but, it just make no sense, as the game wan't built for that, naval combat is out of game's scope, i'm not even going to talk about teh fact that it would need a rewrite, wich is the death knoll of many projects

I agree, theres no point, a whole new game would have to be written for it to be any good. The Naval aspect of Steel Panthers games is weak to say the least, apart from Naval bombardment, which is fine.

And I just can't get past patrol boats that sound like trucks...

When playing DOS Steel Panthers II as a child I absolutely loved the naval aspect. If Don and Andy were to improve the naval capability of SPMBT or SPWWII I would be overjoyed. As a 8 or 9 year old I remember trying to make a mostly maritime mission. I had a little island for arty and grunts and the rest was a pure ship battle. Unfortunately I never got the the AI's ships to react correctly.

it is possible to get a funny result in a few steps.
1.Build a map full of water, then place concrete islands that look like a ship from above
2.Place Ammo depots, ammo bunkers, dumps
3.Place big guns, i think brits may have 6 inchers, so you can have a light cruiser
4.get a FO, some armies have boat FOs, yo9ull also need spotter planes
5. to play, no DF, go indirect over the opponents islands

I don't have the mod. All the links to download it are long dead. And I doubt Welk even has it because I think he had a hard drive crash a while ago and lost most of his files.

It's an interesting idea, but I've no idea how well it worked.

I have Welk's Napoleon mod, but I've never installed it.

Looks like alot of effort was put into that. Wonder how good it was and if he did anything about the naval sounds.

Which version was it based on Cross?

I think it was based on an early version of WinSPMBT. I'm quite sure it had its own sounds.

As for your "patrol boats sounding like trucks". Sound 34 is used by just about all wheeled vehicles and the occasion boat. The original 'stock' sound is very generic and sounds like a nondescript motor.

It's possible you have 'Cross Sounds' installed, where I made a deliberate decision to use a much more realistic wheeled vehicle sound, as the expense of the occasional motor boat sounding a bit odd; because wheeled vehicles are used constantly in this game, but boats quite rarely.

Sound 232 is a dedicated boat/ship/barge sound, which most boats use, and your patrol boats really should be using that sound, not the wheeled vehicle sound. Cross sounds can't correct that sort of error, you could ask SPCamo to fix it, or adjust your OOB.

I also remember seeing this game a few years ago. I think it would be great if a remake was done on this game. I don't know how it compares with some of the other naval games out there, but it would be a good addition.

Gents: I have two mod files from Jun 2007 built for winSPMBT 3.5. Both in french by Welk--they seemed to be more 'skins' than full mods. Steel Empire was modern naval combat and is 31M with a scenario posted in Jul. Steel Men and Wooden Ships mod was about the age of sail and is about 12M. I posted it here. Paladin

I have the file (Steel_Empire_Alpha2.rar) and the scenario (Battle.rar). The forum won't allow a RAR file over 23.8M. Not sure where I could post the 31.8M RAR file for folks to get to it. Any suggestions since I don't host a site? Paladin

Hi Paladin,

I use 4shared.com which is free, allows uploads up to 200MB in size, and maximum storage of 1 or 2Gig. The only 'catch' for the free account, is that you have to log on to your account at least once every 30 days to keep it.

:)I hope someone with more smarts then myself can make this happen down the road. There are a couple of really good online multi-player games out there. Just the thought gets me excited for the possibilities of seeing this! I miss SSI's Sixth Fleet and an WinSP Naval game would be awesome! I feel the urge to launch ADCAP Mk48's at something!!:D:D

Cross: Thanks for the info. You are correct, the file I have is AKA Steel Napolean and is from the age of sail. A quote from the readme "STEEL REVOLUTIONS & EMPIRE (1776 - 1820) Ex - STEEL NAPOLEON" and all the rest is in French. One scenario was included in the mod. I have posted the additional scenario Battle.rar that was intended for this mod for any one interested.

Don: Sorry for the premature excitement but I thought I had the modern version also based on the file names. All my links to the original French site end up in error 404 dead ends. Don't worry about an exception since Cross has it available. However, I will tinker with it and break it into two RAR files and post in this thread. It did not have an installer--just a compressed collection of the files in directories that had to be hand loaded into a clean winSPMBT 3.5. An interesting 'extra' was the original 'Steel Panthers II' docs in french in a pdf. I have been a pack rat of most everything that has been posted over the years on the lists.

Turns out that about 30M of the original 78M were two battle sounds files for music during play. I have removed them from the RAR file and posted the adjusted 'small' file. Apologies to Welk.

Well I took "Junk2Drive" info and contacted the blog. Informed him of the apparent interest in the game and directed him to the forum provided he's who "we're" looking for. Had to use my google translator so we'll see if he posts or emails me directly.

RE: google translator, there is a plugin for Firefox that lets me click, drag, right click, a block of text, and translate it in a new tab. Great for forum posts.

I am really surprised that there still have not been more naval games built on the Steel Panther format. I guess that one mod based on SP was really good looking; even with carriers. Too bad someone can't get it going, again.

Well, i never played a naval battle with ships, but i once made little islands with guns and ammo depots so i would hit the other islands with my howitzers and blow them(ammo dumps go bang)
There are a few scenarios with rivers and river gunboats, you could use the "Wide river" setting at random to get one in a generated map so you could move along them with gunboats to shoot things.
